What Changed

When the agent links a folder in chat, the file surface no longer tries to preview it. FilePreviewPanel now treats the server's path_not_file read failure as "this is a folder": it keeps the breadcrumbs, hides the preview pane, and lets the file tree fill the surface. FileBrowserPanel can now reveal, expand, and select a directory the same way it reveals a file, and useProjectFileQuery exposes the failure as isNotFile.

Why

A chat link cannot tell a folder from a file, so clicking a folder mention such as .agents/skills opened it as a file. The server refuses to read a directory, and the panel showed Failed to read workspace file '.agents/skills' in '/home/exedev'. with nothing selected in the tree.

Detection uses the read failure rather than the workspace listing on purpose: the listing skips hidden folders and truncates large roots, so the reported case never appeared in it.

UI Changes

Before: clicking the skills folder chip opens a broken file preview.

After: the same click keeps the folder breadcrumbs and shows the tree instead of an error. In this capture the workspace is a home directory, so the hidden .agents folder is not in the tree listing and is not auto-expanded; folders that are in the listing are expanded and selected.

Validation:

• vp test run apps/web/src/components/files/projectFilesQueryState.test.tsx apps/web/src/components/files/FilePreviewPanel.test.ts: 12 passed, including a new test for the path_not_file case
• tsc --noEmit in apps/web: clean

The media-directory case is still unresolved at d522363. FilePreviewPanel now enables the query, but useProjectFileQuery still chooses its read atom only when enabled && !isMedia. A directory named assets.png therefore never reaches readFile, leaves isNotFile false, and stays in the media-preview path. PDF paths do not hit this inner media guard.

Please account for this remaining guard in projectFilesQueryState.ts, or keep the media-extension limitation explicit. The current comment and resolved-thread replies claim that assets.png is handled, but the hook still suppresses that read.

You're right, and thanks for the precise catch. Fixed in 5ff5bc2.

I removed the guard in FilePreviewPanel and stopped there without checking the hook, so my claim that assets.png was handled was wrong. As you say, useProjectFileQuery picked the read atom only when enabled && !isMedia, so image and video names still went to the empty atom no matter what the caller passed. PDFs were genuinely fixed by the earlier commit, images and videos were not.

That inner gate is gone now, so enabled is the only thing deciding whether a read happens. Its two callers make that safe: FilePreviewPanel wants the read precisely so a folder can report path_not_file, and useT3ProjectFileScripts only ever reads the project file. The gate dated back to #9023, where the hook was the only place that knew a media path should not be pulled as text.

Added a test covering a folder named assets.png reporting isNotFile, since the existing media test passed enabled: false and so never exercised this.
