fix(server): finished outbox rows and old PR cache files are pruned - #16247
Conversation
The orchestration effect outbox kept every succeeded, failed and cancelled row forever (10,258 rows on a real install), and the pull request read cache left one file per PR read on disk long after the entry expired (739 files since Sep 15), because the persisted cache only drops an expired entry when the same key is read again. The outbox gets a `pruneSettled` method that deletes succeeded and cancelled rows completed more than seven days ago, 500 rows per statement so a backlog never holds the write lock for long. Failed rows stay, because storage cleanup keeps a deleted thread's worktree while any of its effects failed. Every other reader only asks whether a row is pending or running, and the deterministic-id dedupe that relies on old rows only spans one command retry or one restart. A layer-owned fiber runs it after server activation and then hourly, in the production orchestration layer. The PR read cache layer sweeps its directory on the same schedule and deletes `pr-v2` entry files not written for a day. Entries expire a minute after they are written, so the day is only slack for clock changes. The `revisions` scope file is left alone. Event-store compaction (`compactEventStore`) stays unwired: command retries replay their events, clients catch up from a cursor, and it needs a vacuum to return space, so it needs its own design. ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized server-maintenance fix that bounds completed outbox rows and expired pull-request cache files without changing active workflows or user-facing product capabilities. Cleanup is age- and status-scoped, batched, production-wired, and covered by focused tests. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |
Thread transfer impact✅ Thread transfer remains within every enforced ceiling.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe server now periodically removes settled effect rows older than seven days and pull-request cache entry files older than one day. Both cleanup processes start after server activation and repeat hourly. ChangesEffect outbox retention

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The cache sweep may remove stray files that merely share the cache prefix. Tighten the filename match before merging; the impact is narrow, and the rest of the cleanup behavior looks sound. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Import EffectOutbox as a namespace.
Replace the named aliases with import * as EffectOutbox from "./EffectOutbox.ts". Use EffectOutbox.layer and EffectOutbox.pruneWorkerLive at their call sites. As per coding guidelines: “Consumers use the module as a namespace” and “Never import { layer as fooLayer }.”

Effect 4.0.1 PersistedCache storeId KeyValueStore layerFileSystem entry key filename source GitHub
💡 Result:
For **Effect 4.0.1**, I can’t verify the exact `PersistedCache` key construction from the available GitHub source: the version-tagged `PersistedCache.ts` path returned 404, and the accessible repository results are for other or unspecified revisions.
What is established:
- `PersistedCache` uses `storeId` as a store namespace; the cache also persists request results using each request’s primary key. ([eugene1g.github.io](https://eugene1g.github.io/effect-handbook/tooling/persistence?utm_source=openai))
- `KeyValueStore.layerFileSystem(directory)` stores each key as a percent-encoded filename. ([effect.website](https://effect.website/docs/v3/api/platform/KeyValueStore?utm_source=openai))
So the filesystem filename is derived from the **key passed to `KeyValueStore`**, not necessarily `storeId` alone. The exact combined key format—whether and how it joins `storeId` with a request key—remains unconfirmed for 4.0.1. The closest relevant source is the [PersistedCache implementation in the Effect-TS GitHub repository](https://github.com/Effect-TS/effect-smol/tree/main/packages/effect/src/unstable/persistence).

site:github.com/Effect-TS/effect-smol/tree/v4.0.1/packages/effect/src/unstable/persistence PersistedCache.ts KeyValueStore.ts storeId key
💡 Result:
I couldn’t verify the requested **v4.0.1** source files: direct requests for both file paths at that tag returned 404. The closest source I found describes `PersistedCache` as using a named persistence store (`storeId`) and a request’s primary key to identify entries—but it does not establish the exact implementation at v4.0.1. ([]())
If you’re asking how `storeId` and `key` relate: the handbook says `storeId` namespaces the persistence store, while the primary key identifies the request entry within it. That’s handbook documentation, not confirmation of the requested tag’s source. ([eugene1g.github.io](https://eugene1g.github.io/effect-handbook/tooling/persistence?utm_source=openai))

Match complete PR cache entry names before pruning.
A valid entry name is pr-v2 followed by a 64-character lowercase SHA-256 hex digest. The dedicated pull-requests directory limits the risk, but startsWith(STORE_ID) can still select and remove a stale stray file such as pr-v2-backup.json. The existing test preserves only a file without the prefix.

The server's state grew without bound in two places. The orchestration effect outbox kept every finished row forever (10,258 rows on a real install). The pull request read cache left one file per PR read on disk long after the entry expired (739 files since Sep 15), because the persisted cache only drops an expired entry when the same key is read again.
Fix
EffectOutboxV2.pruneSettleddeletessucceededandcancelledrows completed more than 7 days ago. It deletes 500 rows per statement, so a backlog never holds the write lock for long.failedrows stay, because storage cleanup keeps a deleted thread's worktree while any of its effects failed. Every other reader (claiming, recovery, the orchestrator's restart-continuation check, storage cleanup) only asks whether a row is pending, running or failed. The only use of an old settled row is deterministic-id dedupe, and that spans one command retry or one restart. The window is justified in a comment onSETTLED_EFFECT_RETENTION. A layer-owned fiber (pruneWorkerLive) runs the prune after server activation and then hourly viaSchedule.spaced. It is wired intoOrchestrationV2ProductionLayerLiveonly.pr-v2*entry files whose mtime is more than a day old. Entries expire one minute after they are written, so the day is only slack for clock changes, and pruning a live entry would cost one refetch. Therevisionsscope file and unrelated files are left alone, and one failing file does not stop the sweep. Not changed:
ProjectionMaintenance.compactEventStorestays unwired. Running it on a live server is unsafe for three reasons:thread.deleted.A safe version needs an age cutoff, must keep
thread.deleted, and needs a vacuum, so it is a separate design.Verification
