Closes #15032.

The V2 desktop app opens a new Chromium profile (t3code-v2) and never read the V1 profile's Local Storage. After upgrading, stashed prompts, unsent drafts, layout, theme, and in-app browser history came up empty. The V1 data was still on disk, but V2 never looked at it.

Fix

On first launch, V2 now imports the V1 profile's localStorage for the t3code://app origin.

  • Read without opening. chromiumLocalStorage.ts is a small read-only LevelDB reader that understands Snappy compression. It reads the files directly and never takes LevelDB's lock, so the import works while stable V1 is running and cannot damage V1's data. It finds the live files through the MANIFEST, and the newest sequence number wins, which handles overwrites and deletions the same way LevelDB does. If the data is truncated or corrupt, it fails rather than returning partial data.
  • Which V1 profile. V1 used T3 Code (Alpha) when that folder existed and t3code otherwise. The import picks whichever one has the most recently written Local Storage. This avoids importing a stale Alpha folder, the problem [Bug]: V2 desktop seeds t3code-v2 Local State from a stale "T3 Code (Alpha)" profile, making connection-catalog.json undecryptable #15001 reports for Local State.
  • Merge before the app reads. The main process reads the items before any window opens. The preload pulls them over a sync IPC and merges them before app code touches storage:
    • Existing V2 values win.
    • Stash entries are merged by id: V2's entries first, then V1's.
    • V1 drafts are added only for threads that have no V2 draft. This works because the V2 thread migration keeps thread ids.
    • Stash and drafts are imported first, so if storage is full they take priority over layout state.
    • The per-install t3.backgroundActivity.clientId is not copied.
  • Once. When the import finishes, V2 writes a v1-local-storage-imported marker into its profile. If the read fails, or no window finishes the import, there is no marker and the import retries on the next launch. Dev builds skip the import because they already share one profile.

The thread migration guide now says what carries over.

Verification

  • Unit tests cover the merge rules: existing V2 values win, stash entries merge by id, drafts merge by thread, the client id is skipped, and storage quota failures are handled. All apps/desktop src/app and src/ipc tests pass, and desktop typecheck and lint are clean.
  • An Electron 44.4.2 harness ran the real preload.ts and service on Linux:
    • On launch 1, the page's first inline script already sees the V1 stash, drafts, and theme.
    • On launch 2, after V2 changes them, V2's values are kept.
    • The V1 files are byte-identical afterwards.
    • The import also works while another Electron process holds the V1 profile open.
  • The reader was also checked locally against profiles written by Electron 44.4.2, covering a Snappy-compressed table, log entries, deletions, overwrites, and Latin-1 and UTF-16 strings. It was not checked in as a test fixture, because the reader is read-only and fails closed: on any parse error the import retries on the next launch.
  • The reader decoded all 14 keys from a read-only copy of a real macOS V1 profile, including drafts and layout state.

Not run: a full packaged app on macOS or Windows.

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

V2 moved the desktop app to a new Chromium profile (t3code-v2) and never
read the V1 profile's Local Storage, so stashed prompts, unsent drafts,
layout and theme came up empty after upgrading.

On first launch the main process now reads the V1 profile's Local Storage
LevelDB directly (read-only, no lock, so it works while V1 runs) and the
preload merges the items into the new profile before app code reads
storage. Existing V2 values win; stash entries and drafts are merged per
entry. A marker in the V2 profile makes it run once; a failed read retries.

🟠 High app/chromiumLocalStorage.ts:168

A truncated non-padding log record makes readLogRecords return earlier batches, so readChromiumLocalStorage returns a partial map and the caller can commit the import marker, permanently skipping newer updates. Throw a LevelDbFormatError for truncated or checksum-invalid records so the documented read failure triggers a retry.

Partly agree. Throwing would block the import forever on a permanently corrupt record, since V1 keeps appending to a reused log after a torn write. 4534890 does what LevelDB's own log reader does instead: a corrupt record skips the rest of its 32KB block and reading continues, so later batches are no longer lost. A record cut off at end-of-file still ends the log, matching LevelDB recovery (that write never committed). Separately, the read now fails and retries if CURRENT or the MANIFEST changed while reading.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds an automatic first-launch migration with a substantial custom LevelDB reader, IPC/preload coordination, and persistence changes for user-authored local data. Its complexity and unresolved partial-log data-integrity concern warrant human validation.

The reader was verified against real Electron 44 and macOS V1 profiles
locally. It is read-only and fails closed (the import retries next
launch), so a checked-in binary fixture isn't worth carrying.

V2 can mark the import complete despite a failed storage write, and partial log replay or choosing the wrong V1 profile can also leave legacy state out of V2. The original V1 data remains available, but these migration gaps should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Explanation

The import, preload merge, and merge tests implement the main #15032 requirements. The LevelDB reader works without opening the V1 database, and V2 values take precedence. However, findV1LocalStorage selects a profile by the mtime of its Local Storage/leveldb directory. Writes to existing LevelDB files do not update that directory timestamp. When both V1 profile folders exist, the code can select stale data and omit the latest Local Storage.

- Pick the V1 profile by its newest LevelDB file, not the directory mtime.
- Skip a corrupt log block and keep reading, as LevelDB does, instead of
  dropping everything after it.
- Fail the read (and retry next launch) if the database changed mid-read.
- Only mark the import done after every write succeeded and storage was
flushed; taking the items clears them so a reload cannot merge twice.
- Cap the merged stash at 20 entries; skip the snap-shot setup resume key.
- Keep a leading U+FEFF in UTF-16 values.

Read the current log and up to the exact previous log rather than every
log above the older number, and reject a MANIFEST missing the log number,
next file, or last sequence so an empty read retries instead of completing.

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* refactor(server): CloudLink fails with its own errors; the connect routes map them to HTTP (pingdotgg#16341)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* refactor(server): replay guards stay in CloudLink (pingdotgg#16349)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(server): project favicons stop being rescanned every minute (pingdotgg#16206)

Favicons in ProjectEnrichmentService now keep for 15 minutes. Repository identity keeps its 1-minute TTL, so remote changes still show within a minute.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(server): Claude limits load again for users with large transcript histories (pingdotgg#16358)

The Claude capabilities probe now asks for usage with skipBehaviors, so it no longer scans every local transcript and misses its 4 s deadline. Takes over pingdotgg#14456.

* chore(contracts): take the Moatless V2 backend into the upstream merge

Regenerate the threads.getShell fixture as a V2 row, decode it as the RPC
layer does, drop four UnsupportedMethodError entries the V2 backend now
serves, and reconcile docs/fork/gaps.md with soaplabs/moatless#1068.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode a Moatless V2 thread projection fixture

The fixture comes from the moatless feat/t3code-v2-timeline-and-sessions
branch and holds every timeline item kind it translates tool calls into,
its plans, and the provider rows that let a client steer a running turn.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests in the Typecheck workflow

Its Moatless fixtures are the one check that a backend response decodes
against the schemas the client reads, and the package is small enough for
the 4 CPU / 8 GiB runner.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests before the typecheck

The runner loses contact during pnpm typecheck, which skipped the
fixture decodes queued after it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode the V2 projection's node rows

Regenerated from soaplabs/moatless#1071 at ed50318e, which backs every
rootNodeId and nodeId with a node row.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(fork): narrow the V2 gap to what moatless#1071 still refuses
