Babysitting a PR is one of the most common things people ask agents to do in T3 Code. Today every agent runs its own watcher (gh polling, sleep loops, or a provider monitor tool). That costs tokens, needs a harness with a monitor tool, and stops when the session or the server goes away. The server already syncs every linked PR each minute, so it should be the one watching.

Now an agent calls watch_pull_request (or you pick Watch for changes in the Linked pull requests panel; mobile shows "Watching"). Once a minute, the server checks each watched PR. It wakes the thread only when:

  • a check fails (each one as soon as it fails, so a check that never finishes cannot hold failures back)
  • the required checks pass (GitHub isRequired; all checks where a host marks none required)
  • someone other than you or the agent comments or reviews
  • the branch starts to conflict with its base

The server finds events and the agent judges them. There are no readiness rules on the server, unlike the closed #4428.

How it works:

  • The watch lives on the thread's PR link (ThreadPullRequestLink.watch) and records what the agent was last told, so each change is reported once.
  • PullRequestWatchReactor reads detail and conversation through the existing provider-agnostic PullRequestService. It wakes the agent through the existing server notification path, with the monitor source kind so older clients still render it.
  • The wake and the recorded progress commit in one orchestrator command. That command is rejected if the watch was stopped or restarted, or if the thread settled, while the host was being read.
  • Watching ends when the PR merges or closes, when unwatched, after 10 wakes in a row that bring only comments (so a chatty bot cannot loop an agent), or when the host cannot be read for 15 minutes. That last one wakes the agent with the reason, so the UI never says "Watching" while nothing is read.
  • A wake is news, not a merge decision. Readiness rules and the final base check stay with the agent.
  • Known limit: replies after the first 10 in one review thread are not read.
  • unwatch_pull_request and the web menu stop it. list_thread_pull_requests shows watching. The runtime instructions tell agents to use the tool instead of polling.
  • Capability flag threadPullRequestWatch gates the client toggles against older servers.

Closes #10717.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds a substantial production workflow that polls pull requests, persists watch state, and wakes agents, spanning server orchestration, provider reads, contracts, MCP tools, and UI. It also advertises the new capability as enabled by default, so the change requires human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds pull-request watch and unwatch commands, stored watch state, and a server reactor that checks watched pull requests every minute. The reactor updates watch state and can wake the associated thread when it detects changes. Web and mobile interfaces display watch status and controls.

Changes

Pull-request watch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Watch contracts and pull-request data
packages/contracts/src/threadPullRequest.ts, packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/*
Contracts add watch state, client and internal watch commands, and an optional watch capability. Pull-request detail can include the head SHA, and checks can include required-check status. GitHub query generation requests required-check data only on github.com.
Watch and unwatch entry points
packages/client-runtime/src/operations/commands.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadCommands.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/pullRequests/*, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts, apps/server/src/provider/RuntimeInstructions.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/testkit/OrchestratorScenario.ts
The client dispatches watch commands. MCP tools start and stop watches, report watch status, and reject requests for known non-open pull requests. The server advertises watch support, and runtime instructions direct monitoring requests to the watch tool.
Watch state and orchestration
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.test.ts
Orchestration starts and stops watches, preserves watch state during relinking, clears it when a stacked pull request is dismissed, and rejects stale syncs and invalid wake requests. Tests cover watch persistence, stopping, and late wake rejection.
Watch evaluation and scheduled checks
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/pullRequestWatch.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/PullRequestWatchReactor.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/pullRequestWatch.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.test.ts, apps/server/src/server.ts
The reactor checks watched pull requests once per minute. Evaluation reports failed and passed checks, eligible new remarks, and new conflicts; it tracks repeat reports and ends a watch after 10 consecutive comment-only wakes. The server starts the reactor, and tests cover evaluation and sweep behavior.
Watch controls and presentation
apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/ThreadPullRequestsPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/git/GitOverviewSheet.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-work-log.tsx, packages/shared/src/t3McpToolPresentation.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/t3ToolSummary.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/work-log/presentation.ts, docs/user/source-control.md
Web and mobile views display watch status, and the web row menu toggles watches when the server advertises support. Tool summaries and icons include watch actions. User documentation describes watch behavior and stop conditions.

Explanation

#10717 requires failed-check metadata and relevant logs or output in the thread wake. evaluatePullRequestWatch reports each newly failed check, and resets tracked check state when headSha changes. However, PullRequestCheck contains only name, status, description, URL, and required status. pullRequestWatchMessage includes the check name, status, and URL; it does not fetch or include logs or output. Closed issue #4428 adds no requirements.

Bypass detailCache for watch reads.

allowStale: false still reads detailCache, which retains successful details for 15 seconds. If that cache contains an S0 failure absent from watch.failedChecks, and the PR pushes to S1 before the next one-minute sweep, the evaluator can report the obsolete failure and wake the thread for S0. Make the watch read fetch current detail before evaluating checks.

* fix(pull-requests): PR detail reads no longer drain the GitHub quota (pingdotgg#16280)

Takes over pingdotgg#13841. A PR query refreshes on the server's refresh signal only while something reads it, and the server shares detail, activity, and preview for 60 seconds, or 10 minutes once merged.

* fix(server): Claude limits load again for users with large transcript histories (pingdotgg#16358)

The Claude capabilities probe now asks for usage with skipBehaviors, so it no longer scans every local transcript and misses its 4 s deadline. Takes over pingdotgg#14456.

* chore(contracts): take the Moatless V2 backend into the upstream merge

Regenerate the threads.getShell fixture as a V2 row, decode it as the RPC
layer does, drop four UnsupportedMethodError entries the V2 backend now
serves, and reconcile docs/fork/gaps.md with soaplabs/moatless#1068.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode a Moatless V2 thread projection fixture

The fixture comes from the moatless feat/t3code-v2-timeline-and-sessions
branch and holds every timeline item kind it translates tool calls into,
its plans, and the provider rows that let a client steer a running turn.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests in the Typecheck workflow

Its Moatless fixtures are the one check that a backend response decodes
against the schemas the client reads, and the package is small enough for
the 4 CPU / 8 GiB runner.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests before the typecheck

The runner loses contact during pnpm typecheck, which skipped the
fixture decodes queued after it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode the V2 projection's node rows

Regenerated from soaplabs/moatless#1071 at ed50318e, which backs every
rootNodeId and nodeId with a node row.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(fork): narrow the V2 gap to what moatless#1071 still refuses
