If you run T3 Code on several machines, updating meant visiting each one: the desktop app from the sidebar, each server from Connections, and providers from Provider settings. Now the sidebar update button does all of it in one click.

How it works

When any connected machine has work, the button shows what it will update ("Update this app, 2 servers, and 3 providers"). One confirm dialog lists each machine on one line, then:

  1. Providers update on every connected machine. This finishes before any server restarts.
  2. Servers on other machines move to the version this desktop app is about to install. On web, they move to the web app's version. The existing updateServer flow waits for each server to reconnect.
  3. This desktop app installs last, because its relaunch ends the run. Its download runs alongside steps 1 and 2. A failed download skips only the local install.

The button uses the server update icon from Connections (circle with up arrow). The download arrow stays for a local-only app update. During a run the button is dimmed, and it shows download progress while this app downloads.

Rules for which servers are included:

  • Server updates show only after npm has the version. The client checks registry.npmjs.org/t3/<version> and re-checks every 5 minutes. Provider updates, remote desktop apps (they use their own update feed), and the local install are not gated.
  • Servers hosted by this desktop app (the primary backend and local WSL backends) are skipped, because the app install updates them.
  • A background service stays on its release channel. A nightly desktop app does not move a stable server to nightly. A remote desktop app follows its own update feed.
  • Disconnected machines, sessions without environment:maintain, and installs that need a manual update are skipped. The existing notice and Connections settings still handle them.

With only a local app update, the button keeps today's flow: download, then click to restart. Mobile already has per-environment updates and is not changed. The legacy sidebar is not changed.

No contract or server changes. useServerUpdate and the provider batch (now useProviderUpdates) are reused as they are.

Screenshots

Web, with two outdated providers on the connected server.

Before (main) After
Before: no update button on web After: update button with tooltip "Update 2 providers"

Click opens one confirm dialog with one line per machine. When restarts will stop running threads, it says how many, and how many can resume afterwards:

Dialog: "Update 2 servers and 2 providers?", two machine lines, and "3 running threads will be interrupted and can resume after the restart."

This screenshot uses a temporary local patch to show 2 remote servers and 3 running threads, because the dev environment has no remote server that is behind or agent that is running. The patch is not committed.

With servers and this app included, the lines read like This app: 0.0.50, restarts last and alvin: server to 0.0.50, Codex, Claude. The unit tests cover this text.

Running threads

The dialog counts the running threads on the machines that restart: each server it updates, plus this app's own servers when this app installs. Provider updates restart nothing. Threads on a server with Continue threads after restarts on can resume afterwards. Since #18461 that setting is on by default, with a limit of 3 automatic resumes in a row, and it never resumes a thread that waits on the user. The text says "can resume", not "will", because recovery still skips some threads.

The dialog does not change the setting. An earlier version had a checkbox that saved it on every restarting server. With the safe default, that checkbox only added a way to turn continuation off everywhere by accident, so it is gone.

Verification

  • updateEverything.logic.test.ts covers which servers are chosen (this app's own server, release channel, scope, disconnected, manual, up to date), the run order (servers wait for providers, the local install runs last, a failed download skips only the install), and the summary and per-machine text.
  • The tests also cover which servers restart (updated servers, plus this app's servers only when it installs) and which of them resume threads.
  • Web typecheck, targeted lint, knip, and sidebar tests pass (14).
  • Checked in a web dev client: the button, tooltip, and confirm dialog render (screenshots above). I did not confirm the run. Not tested with several machines or in a desktop build, which needs a second paired server.

Reviewed with sol-loop: 3 rounds with GPT-6.1 Sol on high. Reviewed with sol-loop: 4 rounds with GPT-6.1 Sol on high on the final change, which includes the running-thread dialog from #18452. UI cleanup by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes the sidebar into a new cross-machine update workflow that can update providers, restart remote servers, and relaunch the desktop app, with version and npm-release gating plus running-thread interruption concerns. The substantial production logic and changed default action make this broader than a small isolated update.

…ead of a settings checkbox

Continue threads after restarts is on by default with guards since #18461. A
checkbox that saves it on every restarting server only adds a way to turn it
off everywhere by accident, so the dialog now just says how many running
threads stop and how many continue.

aorwall added a commit to aorwall/t3code that referenced this pull request Oct 13, 2026
Merges upstream `pingdotgg/t3code` `5070a83a32` (48 commits, base
`e688034b5f`) into the fork. It does not stack on another PR.

## Merge
- 240 of 240 upstream-range files landed. Fork delta: 775 files.
- One conflict: `apps/web/src/routeTree.gen.ts`, regenerated for
upstream's new `/_chat/new` route. The other 18 files both sides touched
auto-merged: `duplicate-adds` and `resolution-check` are clean, and
every delta guard holds.
- `pnpm-lock.yaml` was re-derived by install, and `verify --only
lockfile` passes.
- Sweep: `promptLinks/HostedPromptLinkLanding.tsx` renders only in the
`hosted-static` auth state, which Moatless never reaches. Taken as
upstream's.
- Unsupported methods: ADD 0, DROP 0.

## Verification
`verify.mjs` passes duplicate-adds, tripwires, resolution-check,
unsupported-methods, lockfile, fmt, lint, typecheck and build. `test`
fails only on files that fail alone and failed the same way on the last
three merges, because of the sandbox: shared `AgentScope`
(`oom_score_adj` is 935 here), server `ServerBrowserPage` (no Playwright
browser), `AcpAdapterV2`, `OrchestratorReplayFixtures`, and
provider-opencode `OpenCodeServerLedger`.

## Usable as-is
- Prompt links (pingdotgg#18454): `/new?prompt=…`, `ThreadLinkPrompt` on thread
routes, and copy-prompt-link from messages and the command palette.
Choosing a project and placing the prompt work against Moatless.
- Terminal colors (pingdotgg#17168), context meter rounding (pingdotgg#17539), stable
button text (pingdotgg#18866), setup wizards follow themes (pingdotgg#18725), Git actions
follow the selected thread (pingdotgg#18862), dropped threads attach to pending
answers (pingdotgg#18789), the compact merge-button second click (pingdotgg#18878), a
numeric `q` on pull requests (pingdotgg#18666), the home-page bounce fix
(pingdotgg#18672), running terminals shown in the sidebar (pingdotgg#18740), and
computer-use titles (pingdotgg#18865).
- Mobile and desktop fixes (theme contrast, settings rows, the PR action
bar, image caching, the iOS 27.2 black screen, Hyprland, updater
diagnostics).
- "Update everything" sidebar pill (pingdotgg#18053): inert against Moatless,
which advertises no `serverSelfUpdate` or `versionAdvisory`.

## Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- Prompt-link "clone this repository"
(`NewThreadLinkView.cloneRepository`): needs `projectClone.start` and
the `projectCloneTracking` capability. It refuses with a message today.
Added to gaps.md under *Project and repository management*.
- Renaming built-in models (pingdotgg#18840): saves through
`server.updateSettings` (custom model entry with a built-in slug). It
stays behind `FEATURES.providerConfiguration`, under the existing
settings gap.
- Provider secret settings (pingdotgg#18505, `secretSetting` and
`isSecretSetting` in contracts): stored on the host, so they fall under
the same settings gap.

## Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
Recorded in gaps.md under *Runtime fixes upstream made to its own
server*:
- A confirmed Claude subagent outcome settles that task and its child
work (pingdotgg#18778, the new `subagent` target on
`thread.background-work.settle`).
- Claude thinking before a tool call stays a collapsed Thought (pingdotgg#18887).
- Codex title and branch-name generation no longer starts the user's MCP
servers (pingdotgg#17058).
- The event store resyncs a thread holding an event type from a newer
build (pingdotgg#15937, `isKnownOrchestrationV2EventType`).
- A migration id clash stops startup with a clear error (pingdotgg#15925).
- Cached branch PR lookups start no git process (pingdotgg#17063).
- PR head commits are reported for Forgejo, GitLab and Bitbucket
(pingdotgg#18463, pingdotgg#18608, pingdotgg#18402), and PR bases resolve to branch names (pingdotgg#18754).

vedprakash2302 added a commit to vedprakash2302/Cody that referenced this pull request Oct 13, 2026
Brings in upstream through pingdotgg#18940 (e82a1ce).

- Superseded: upstream's resolveBranchName (pingdotgg#18754) now turns a worktree's base ref (refs/heads/x, refs/remotes/<any remote>/x) into the PR base branch and skips commits and tags. It replaces Cody's createWorktree hunk from "fetch the selected base from its own remote"; Cody's fetch from the base's own remote stays. Added a test for a base on a non-primary remote (upstream/release/v2).
- Checked, no change needed: "update everything" (pingdotgg#18053, pingdotgg#18709) sends a remote Cody desktop to its own Cody update feed and only moves standalone servers to versions npm has, so it never installs official T3 over a Cody server.
- Adapted: none. Every other fork patch is untouched by this range.
