After a downgrade, a thread's event log can hold a row whose event type the running server doesn't know, written by the newer build. Web and mobile resume a thread from their cached position when they reconnect. If that row comes after the cached position, the resync fails with SchemaError: Expected "thread.archived" | .... The thread then stays on "Syncing messages..." for good, because every retry replays from the same point and fails the same way.

Client replay in ws.ts now skips a row with an unknown event type, both for a thread (subscribeOrchestrationV2Thread) and for the sidebar's shell stream (subscribeOrchestrationV2Shell), which failed the same way when it resumed past that row. It logs one warning with the aggregate kind, the sequence and the type's length, not the type itself. Everything else that reads the event store stays strict: appends, the provider ingestor, projections and the default read. A known type with a broken payload still fails, even during replay. Both reads page by raw rows before skipping, so a page that ends on a skipped row doesn't end the replay early, and the replay limit still counts every row. The live tail resumes from highWater, which is computed separately, so a skipped row can't hide later events.

This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug (CONTRIBUTING.md). One strict decode on the replay path leaves a thread unable to sync. The fix is an opt-in skip on that one path, and older clients already skip unknown event types the same way (isKnownOrchestrationV2EventType reuses the contract's existing list of known types).

Replaces #14206, which targeted the deleted v2 branch.

Testing

Real server on an isolated home, with the real web app:

  1. Send a message in a thread so it has real history and the client has a cached position.
  2. Stop the server. Insert one row into orchestration_events with an unknown event_type (thread.turn-item.exotic-future-feature) after the real rows, as a downgrade would leave it. Restart the server.
  3. Reload the page so the client resyncs from its cached position.

Before (main at 14fe0158ed): the thread sits on "Syncing messages..." and never recovers. It stays stuck for the whole recording. Every resync hits the same unknown row and fails the same way, so it never recovers on its own.

Before: stuck on Syncing messages

Video: https://files.catbox.moe/num27r.mp4

After: the thread loads and the composer works again. The server logs one line:

WARN: Skipping an application event row with an unknown event type
  { threadId: '39f02df6-1caf-48b2-a75c-35a4c7d9db47', sequence: 43, eventTypeLength: 38 }

This was recorded before a later cleanup; the warning now logs aggregateKind in place of threadId.

After: thread loads

Video: https://files.catbox.moe/fe41vx.mp4

  • vp test run apps/server/src/persistence/OrchestrationEventStore.test.ts apps/server/src/ws.test.ts packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.test.ts: 57 passed. The tests cover both reads: an unknown row in the middle or at the end is skipped with sequences intact, a full 500-row page of unknown rows doesn't end the replay early, and a known type with a broken payload still fails. A ws.test.ts case resumes the shell subscription past an unknown row and gets synchronized plus the later known event; it fails if skipUnknownEventTypes is removed from that caller.
  • vp run -F t3 typecheck and vp run -F @t3tools/contracts typecheck are clean. Lint on the touched files is clean apart from three unused imports in ws.ts that are already on main.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 08fdcc5

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused replay-resilience bug fix that opt-in skips only unknown persisted event types while preserving strict decoding everywhere else and maintaining later-event pagination. Targeted tests cover thread and shell resumption, page boundaries, and malformed known payloads.

📝 Walkthrough

Persisted orchestration event replay can skip unknown event types when the caller opts in. Thread and shell subscriptions use this option, while known event types still undergo payload decoding.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 08fdc

Thread and shell replay now tolerate event types written by a newer build, and known events are still decoded strictly. A bounded agent read can return fewer known events when unknown rows consume its limit. This only affects callers that opt in with a limit, and the risk is small.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 08fdc

The compatibility exception is narrowly scoped and preserves access checks and validation of recognized events. No introduced security weakness was established. Confidence is limited to the replay paths examined, rather than every downgrade scenario.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected output scope is an existing authenticated environment's replay streams: one selected thread for thread replay, and project/thread application events for shell replay. This PR changes tolerated persisted row types, not the existing access scope or event-store ownership.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Client-selected thread identifiers and resume positions feed parameterized event reads. Unknown rows are omitted from replay rather than interpreted as commands or applied to server state. The exception does not grant write authority, and the inspected paths did not establish an introduced attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — WebSocket upgrades authenticate a session, and RPC authorization checks that session's scopes. Both replay subscription methods require orchestration-read scope. These existing controls remain in place; the new exception concerns decoding persisted unknown discriminants, not authentication or authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Skipped rows cannot bypass the existing raw-row replay bounds. On interruption, replay from the last delivered sequence can re-read and skip the same unknown rows deterministically. The existing subscribe-before-highWater buffer and sequence overlap handling preserve concurrent-append handoff; the PR does not introduce a new recovery mechanism.

Exercise unknown-row filtering across a full raw page.

The new fixture has one unknown row, so it does not test continuation after a 500-row page. The sequence test covers pagination across more than 500 rows, but every event type there is known. It therefore does not detect a regression where filtering unknown rows makes catchUpApplicationEvents stop before later known events.

Exercise an unknown persisted event through the shell subscription.

The integration test subscribes to the shell stream and checks synchronization, but it does not include an unknown event in the replay range. The store test covers that event only through readApplicationEvents. Removing skipUnknownEventTypes from this caller would therefore go undetected. Add a shell-resume case that persists an unknown event between known events and asserts synchronization or delivery of the later known event.

Count emitted events, not skipped rows, against limit.

If limit is 1 and the first raw row has an unknown type, remaining reaches zero before this filter runs. The stream returns no events even if a known event follows. When skipping is enabled, continue reading raw pages until the requested number of known events is emitted or the range ends.

A downgraded server can leave application-event rows behind whose
event_type a newer build wrote and this build has never learned. Client
thread resubscription replayed those rows strictly, so the whole
subscription failed instead of just resuming.

Only loadReplayThrough (the client resubscribe path in ws.ts) now opts
OrchestrationEventStore.readAgentEvents into skipUnknownEventTypes,
which logs a warning with thread id, sequence, and event type and
drops the row instead of failing. Everything else that reads this
store - appends, the provider ingestor, projection writes, and
EventStoreV2 - stays strict by default, and a known type with a
payload that fails to decode still fails even with the flag set. The
live tail resumes from a highWater computed independently of replay,
so dropping an unknown row from replay cannot skip past real work
within a session.

…binding

The two new skip-unknown-event-types tests yielded the bare
OrchestrationEventStore import instead of its namespaced service tag, which
this file's other tests already use. Both compiled but resolved the wrong
value at runtime.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
subscribeOrchestrationV2Shell's resume path replayed with
readApplicationEvents, which stayed strict even after the thread fix: a
shell cursor from before a row this build doesn't know still failed the
whole resubscribe with OrchestrationV2GetShellSnapshotError instead of
sending the resumed shell and synchronized.

readApplicationEvents now takes the same skipUnknownEventTypes opt-in as
readAgentEvents, applied only by the shell's resume call in ws.ts.
Pagination now counts raw SQL rows instead of post-filter decoded events,
so a page that drops an unknown row mid-page still advances its cursor and
"more pages?" check correctly - the gap this change closes also applies to
project rows, which readApplicationEvents reads alongside thread rows, so
the known-type check now branches on aggregate_kind. Everything that builds
server state (EventSink catch-up, ingest, projections, the live tail) still
calls through strict, since only the shell's one-shot replay call sets the
flag.

Store-level tests cover the skip and the still-fails-a-broken-known-type
case, mirroring the thread-level tests. They do not reach ws.ts's
subscribeOrchestrationV2Shell itself (the synchronized marker, snapshot
fallback, or shell-stream projection), which would need a layer providing
ThreadManagementService, ProjectStoreV2, ProjectService, and
ProjectEnrichmentService; verified that path manually with a scripted call
to subscribeOrchestrationV2Shell against a real SQLite-backed store, which
now emits synchronized and logs exactly one skip warning.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Two gaps CodeRabbit found in the shell skip-unknown fix:

- The store-level test only had one unknown row, so pagination counting
decoded rows instead of raw ones would have passed anyway. Added a test
with a full READ_PAGE_SIZE page of unknown rows before a later known
event, confirmed it fails if pagination counts post-filter rows (verified
by temporarily reintroducing that exact bug and reverting), and exported
READ_PAGE_SIZE so the test doesn't hardcode a number that could drift.
- No test called subscribeOrchestrationV2Shell itself anywhere in the repo,
so the ws.ts wiring (skipUnknownEventTypes: true) had no regression
coverage. Added one in ws.test.ts, with a real OrchestrationEventStoreLive
+ SqlitePersistenceMemory layer and stubs for the four peripheral
services (ThreadManagementService and ProjectStoreV2 stay bare since this
fixture never looks up a thread or lists projects; ProjectService.getShell
answers for the one project the replay actually projects). Confirmed it
fails if skipUnknownEventTypes: true is removed from ws.ts.

subscribeOrchestrationV2Thread has the same gap (nothing calls it in any
test either), but no equivalent case was added there - out of scope for
this round.

…n rows

The previous fixture started before the known "before" event, so no page
was entirely unknown rows. A read that stopped on an all-unknown page
still passed. Start after "before" so the first page is all unknown.

Merges upstream `pingdotgg/t3code` `5070a83a32` (48 commits, base
`e688034b5f`) into the fork. It does not stack on another PR.

## Merge
- 240 of 240 upstream-range files landed. Fork delta: 775 files.
- One conflict: `apps/web/src/routeTree.gen.ts`, regenerated for
upstream's new `/_chat/new` route. The other 18 files both sides touched
auto-merged: `duplicate-adds` and `resolution-check` are clean, and
every delta guard holds.
- `pnpm-lock.yaml` was re-derived by install, and `verify --only
lockfile` passes.
- Sweep: `promptLinks/HostedPromptLinkLanding.tsx` renders only in the
`hosted-static` auth state, which Moatless never reaches. Taken as
upstream's.
- Unsupported methods: ADD 0, DROP 0.

## Verification
`verify.mjs` passes duplicate-adds, tripwires, resolution-check,
unsupported-methods, lockfile, fmt, lint, typecheck and build. `test`
fails only on files that fail alone and failed the same way on the last
three merges, because of the sandbox: shared `AgentScope`
(`oom_score_adj` is 935 here), server `ServerBrowserPage` (no Playwright
browser), `AcpAdapterV2`, `OrchestratorReplayFixtures`, and
provider-opencode `OpenCodeServerLedger`.

## Usable as-is
- Prompt links (pingdotgg#18454): `/new?prompt=…`, `ThreadLinkPrompt` on thread
routes, and copy-prompt-link from messages and the command palette.
Choosing a project and placing the prompt work against Moatless.
- Terminal colors (pingdotgg#17168), context meter rounding (pingdotgg#17539), stable
button text (pingdotgg#18866), setup wizards follow themes (pingdotgg#18725), Git actions
follow the selected thread (pingdotgg#18862), dropped threads attach to pending
answers (pingdotgg#18789), the compact merge-button second click (pingdotgg#18878), a
numeric `q` on pull requests (pingdotgg#18666), the home-page bounce fix
(pingdotgg#18672), running terminals shown in the sidebar (pingdotgg#18740), and
computer-use titles (pingdotgg#18865).
- Mobile and desktop fixes (theme contrast, settings rows, the PR action
bar, image caching, the iOS 27.2 black screen, Hyprland, updater
diagnostics).
- "Update everything" sidebar pill (pingdotgg#18053): inert against Moatless,
which advertises no `serverSelfUpdate` or `versionAdvisory`.

## Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- Prompt-link "clone this repository"
(`NewThreadLinkView.cloneRepository`): needs `projectClone.start` and
the `projectCloneTracking` capability. It refuses with a message today.
Added to gaps.md under *Project and repository management*.
- Renaming built-in models (pingdotgg#18840): saves through
`server.updateSettings` (custom model entry with a built-in slug). It
stays behind `FEATURES.providerConfiguration`, under the existing
settings gap.
- Provider secret settings (pingdotgg#18505, `secretSetting` and
`isSecretSetting` in contracts): stored on the host, so they fall under
the same settings gap.

## Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
Recorded in gaps.md under *Runtime fixes upstream made to its own
server*:
- A confirmed Claude subagent outcome settles that task and its child
work (pingdotgg#18778, the new `subagent` target on
`thread.background-work.settle`).
- Claude thinking before a tool call stays a collapsed Thought (pingdotgg#18887).
- Codex title and branch-name generation no longer starts the user's MCP
servers (pingdotgg#17058).
- The event store resyncs a thread holding an event type from a newer
build (pingdotgg#15937, `isKnownOrchestrationV2EventType`).
- A migration id clash stops startup with a clear error (pingdotgg#15925).
- Cached branch PR lookups start no git process (pingdotgg#17063).
- PR head commits are reported for Forgejo, GitLab and Bitbucket
(pingdotgg#18463, pingdotgg#18608, pingdotgg#18402), and PR bases resolve to branch names (pingdotgg#18754).
