Closes #18812

Problem

Every time the mobile app reconnects (on Android, coming back after 10+ seconds in the background; on iOS, every unlock), it re-mints signed URLs for every visible attachment image. Each mint is a new URL, and the image caches are keyed by URL, so every photo is downloaded again in full. The thumbnail in the message bubble also used React Native's Image, which can't take a custom cache key at all.

The issue reports this on iOS. It happens the same way on Android.

Change

  • New assetImageSource in apps/mobile/src/lib/assetImageSource.ts. For an attachment resource it gives expo-image a cache key built from the environment id and attachment id. Workspace and media files can change on disk, so they keep caching by URL.
  • The message bubble thumbnail (MessageAttachmentImage) now uses expo-image with that source and cachePolicy="memory-disk", in place of RN Image. Its class names go through useResolveClassNames so it looks the same.
  • The other places that show attachment thumbnails and re-mint on reconnect use the same source: queued message thumbnails (ThreadQueueControl, ComposerQueuedEdit), question-answer images (QuestionAnswerHistory, also moved from RN Image to expo-image), and the context sheet preview (ComposerContextAttachment).
  • Server (apps/server/src/attachmentStore.ts, ws.ts): the id for an inline-uploaded chat image now also hashes its bytes. Before, it came only from the message id and index. Editing a queued message reuses the message id, so a newly added image could take an earlier image's id and silently overwrite its file. That would have left clients showing a stale cached image under the stable key. Retries send the same bytes, so they still get the same id.

URLs are still re-minted on reconnect, so expiry and auth work as before. A new URL for an image that's already cached now loads from disk with no download. The full-screen viewer (react-native-image-viewing) only loads when the user taps, and it is unchanged.

Not in this PR: keeping unexpired URLs across a reconnect, sending an ETag on asset responses, and stable keys for tool-output images. The cache key alone stops the repeat attachment downloads.

Scope and approval

Bug report #18812, which proposes this fix ("give expo-image a stable cacheKey derived from the attachment id"). Mobile JS plus a small server change to attachment ids. No native changes.

Verification

Tested on a POCO M3 Pro (Android 13) with the dev client against a local dev server. Test thread with 3 generated test photos. I counted GET /api/assets/* spans in server.trace.ndjson while I sent the app to the background for 12 seconds and reopened it, twice.

Before (main): every return re-downloaded all 3 photos under new signed URLs. 6 downloads, 6 URLs, 3 files.

Full before recording

After (this PR): same steps. 2 reconnects and 13 URL re-mints, but 0 image downloads. Restarting the app and reopening the thread also downloaded nothing, because the disk cache survives restarts now.

Full after recording

The thumbnails look the same before and after (size, crop, rounded corners):

Also ran:

  • vp test run src/lib/assetImageSource.test.ts (2 passed): an attachment keeps one key across re-signed URLs, and a workspace file keeps its URL key.
  • vp test run src/attachmentStore.test.ts in apps/server (16 passed), including a new case: a queued edit's new image gets its own id and a retry keeps the same id.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit in apps/mobile and apps/server (no errors), and vp lint on the changed files (no new findings).
  • After the review fixes, re-ran one background/return on the phone: 1 reconnect, 0 image downloads.

Not checked: iOS. expo-image supports cacheKey on iOS too, so the same fix should apply there, but I have no iPhone to test on.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Code harness in T3 Code)

Signed asset URLs change on every mint, and each reconnect mints again, so
URL-keyed image caches missed every time. Attachment thumbnails now load
through expo-image with a disk cache key derived from the environment and
attachment id, which never change once stored.

📝 Walkthrough

The server now derives chat attachment IDs from message details and image bytes. The mobile app adds cache keys for attachment image sources and uses those sources in thread, queue, and composer previews.

Changes: Attachment image identity and caching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Derive attachment IDs from image data
apps/server/src/attachmentStore.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/attachmentStore.test.ts
Attachment IDs now include a digest of the image bytes, alongside the message ID and attachment index. Tests check that retries with the same bytes retain an ID and changed bytes produce a different ID.
Build cache-keyed asset image sources
apps/mobile/src/lib/assetImageSource.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/assetImageSource.test.ts
The helper adds an environment-and-attachment-based cache key for attachment image sources. Tests cover URL and environment changes, IDs containing colons, and workspace-file sources.
Use asset sources in attachment previews
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/*, apps/mobile/src/components/ComposerContextAttachment.tsx
Thread attachment previews use the helper with expo-image and memory-disk caching. Composer previews use it for remote images and retain URI-only sources for local and inline images. The question-answer test mocks expo-image.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e1fa

Attachment identity currently uses image bytes, but the new test would not catch a regression in the server path that persists attachments. This is a bounded coverage gap that can be addressed before merge or followed up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e1fa

Content-sensitive IDs protect edited images, and environment-scoped cache keys preserve separation between environments. The main remaining risk is compatibility with older or rolled-back servers that can replace content behind an existing attachment ID. No new authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Stable mobile caching assumes immutable attachment IDs without negotiating that guarantee. A base-version or rolled-back server can overwrite an inline image when a queued edit reuses its message ID and upload index, while the new client retains the earlier image under the same cache key. The head server fixes this for its inline writes, but release sequencing and older-server reachability are unresolved. This is a conditional rollback and client/server consistency concern.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The inspected change affects local attachment-preview cache entries and server inline attachment files. Cache identity is environment-scoped; server deterministic identity includes thread identity and the byte-sensitive message/index key. No added privilege is present in the helper.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Attachment URL issuance retains orchestration-read authorization. Download resolution retains signature, expiry, and attachment-path checks. Cache identity is not a server authorization credential; reuse of already downloaded image bytes is separate from authorization of a new HTTP download.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged pending-upload path checks signed-token expiry, validates received size, promotes a temporary file, and cleans up the temporary path. Claiming copies pending content under a fresh thread-scoped ID, registers successful copies in an uninterruptible region, and cleans up registered claims on error. These controls limit replay against pending IDs from directly replacing an already-claimed final identity.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make immutable attachment identity an explicit negotiated guarantee, retaining URL-keyed caching where that guarantee is unavailable. Separately, consider atomic publication for inline writes so immutable cache identity is backed by a complete-file transition rather than direct final-path writes.

Review follow-ups:
- Inline chat attachments derive their id from the message id and index,
and editing a queued message reuses the message id. A newly added image
could take an earlier image's id and overwrite its file, which would
leave clients showing a stale cached image. The id now also hashes the
bytes, so retries keep their id and different images never share one.
- The context sheet preview uses the stable attachment cache key too.
- Drop the markdown image cache key plumbing; no caller passes it an
  attachment.

Exercise the persistence path in the queued-edit test.

The test calls only chatAttachmentStableKey and createDeterministicAttachmentId. If ws.ts reverts to message-ID-and-index identity, this test still passes while an edited same-index image can reuse the previous attachment ID. Add a server-side test through WS_METHODS.assetsPersistChatAttachments that asserts retries reuse an ID and edited bytes receive a different ID.
