MCP apps could enter fullscreen on load and reopen immediately after exit. Fullscreen now requires activation inside the app; exiting stays available. The web host excludes activation from recent T3 page input, and mobile checks activation in its authenticated WebView relay. Idle web mounts no longer impose a needless delay on the first app click.

Credit to @shivamhwp for the original fix in #18548. Contributor history is preserved, with main merged and maintainer changes on top. Fixes #18545.

Verification

  • Chromium: three real sandboxed-frame tests pass (originally one); mutation runs prove the idle retry and immediate-click regressions fail without their fixes. Twelve shared-host tests pass.
  • Web and mobile typechecks, focused lint/format checks pass.
  • Fresh independent Opus and Sol reviews of the full diff found no blockers.
  • Actual Linux web dev client, isolated synthetic completed thread, 1280×800: load and repeated automatic requests stay inline, a trusted app click opens fullscreen, and exit/refocus plus later retries stay inline. No provider turn or live user data was used.

Before — actual main web component at 5307c233b1, unsolicited fullscreen:

Before: automatic fullscreen takes over the client

After — 9cea9b5275, matching fixture and viewport:

After: automatic requests stay inline and the thread remains usable

Before recording: automatic entry and immediate reentry · After recording: deliberate entry, exit, and rejected retries

Remaining limits

A deliberate app click within five seconds of other T3 page input can be refused; retry after that interval. The browser does not expose activation attribution for other embedded frames. Current iOS/Android WebViews, macOS/Windows, Electron shell, and non-Chromium engines were not run here. In particular, native tap propagation needs a device check before landing. Historical platform recordings in earlier comments do not verify this head. Human approval and current-head CI remain merge gates; this takeover does not merge the PR.

Implementation: gpt-6.1-sol; tests: gpt-6-astra; reviews: claude-opus-5-5 and gpt-6-sol. Harness: Codex / Claude Code through T3 Code.

An app could ask for full screen at any time. One that asks on load or on
every reconnect attempt pulled the client back into full screen each time
the user left it, so the thread could never be reached. Full screen now
needs a recent tap or click in the app on web, desktop and mobile.

Note

Grok responding on behalf of Julius.

Thanks, the Android recordings are useful. They show what our triage of #18545 missed: the X does close full screen, but an app that keeps asking for it takes the screen right back. So gating ui/request-display-mode on a recent tap looks like a fair fix.

One gap before this goes to review. Per Verification, each changed behavior needs evidence, and the McpAppFrame (web/desktop) change wasn't run. #18545 was reported on Windows desktop too. Could you add a short recording on web or desktop that shows:

  1. An app that requests full screen on load or on retry stays inline.
  2. Clicking an in-app full-screen button still opens full screen. This checks the document.activeElement + navigator.userActivation gate.
  3. Exiting full screen stays exited.

If you can't run it on desktop, the web dev build is fine.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 9cea9b5

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained fullscreen safety fix across the web and mobile MCP hosts, with focused browser coverage and matching documentation. It changes when an existing UI transition is permitted but does not add a capability, alter schemas, or modify deployment or review configuration.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

📝 Walkthrough

Mobile and web MCP apps now apply user-interaction checks before accepting fullscreen requests. The change also adds browser tests for web fullscreen behavior and updates the user guidance for fullscreen entry.

Changes: Fullscreen request gating

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gate mobile fullscreen requests
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/McpAppWebView.tsx
Mobile relays whether a message came from active interaction with the app iframe. The host checks this flag, pending user input or approval, and navigation focus before accepting a fullscreen request.
Gate web fullscreen requests
apps/web/src/components/chat/McpAppFrame.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/McpAppFrame.browser.test.tsx, docs/user/html-renders.md
The web app rejects fullscreen requests if page input occurred within the previous five seconds, or if existing request conditions fail. Browser tests cover requests after app taps, page activation elsewhere, fullscreen exit, and frame blur. The documentation describes the timing rule.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ba3cd

Embedded MCP apps can now enter full screen only after a deliberate tap or click inside the app. Requests on load, on retry, or right after the user leaves full screen stay inline, so an app can no longer trap users in full screen. On web and desktop, a tap within five seconds of clicking elsewhere in T3 Code is ignored; this trade-off is documented. No merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ba3cd

This change limits when embedded apps can take over the screen while keeping fullscreen exit unrestricted. No new privilege or data-access expansion was identified, but platform-specific interaction and exit behavior was not fully validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected authority is an embedded app's ability to take over client presentation and obstruct access to its surrounding thread or navigation. The reviewed changes narrow that authority rather than expanding tool permissions, credentials, or data-access scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The mobile outer page accepts messages only from the direct app iframe and computes activation itself from browser activation and iframe focus. The app controls the nested payload, not this envelope field. Android's direct bridge exposure is countered by native secret validation; that boundary predates and is preserved by this PR.
  • observed — Web intake verifies the sending window against the app frame. Fullscreen eligibility then combines frame focus, browser activation, a parent-input cooldown, pending-user state, confirmation state, and competing-fullscreen ownership. Focus alone is explicitly insufficient.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new browser test exercises an app that refocuses itself and requests fullscreen on load, after exit, and after inline blur. It asserts rejection for those cases and acceptance after an app-button interaction. Its clock skew and explicit parent-focused Escape case do not establish behavior for every real-time activation boundary or iframe-focused exit variant.

Explanation

The changes in McpAppFrame.tsx and McpAppWebView.tsx gate MCP app fullscreen entry on user activation. The browser test verifies the gate. The documentation change describes the resulting tap-or-click behavior. These changes support the fullscreen-trap fix in #18545. No unrelated change is shown.

Explanation

The description clearly states the problem, implementation, verification results, evidence, limitations, and agent details. It links the related issue and prior pull request. Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #18545 requires an unavailable MCP viewport to show a bounded local error with Retry and Close or Back, stop its reconnect loop, and keep conversation navigation usable. The PR gates fullscreen entry in McpAppFrame and McpAppWebView, and adds browser coverage for automatic requests and user activation. These changes address the fullscreen trap. They do not add the required fallback controls or terminate the app retry loop. The reviewed changes also show no automated coverage for unavailable-resource reopen and fullscreen-restore behavior on mobile.

Resolution

Implement the #18545 unavailable-viewport fallback with Retry and Close or Back. Bound or terminate retries while preserving conversation navigation. Add automated coverage for reopen and fullscreen-restore behavior, including mobile behavior.

Thread transfer impact

⚠️ The latest CI run did not produce a thread transfer result for f109582.

This comment will update automatically after the next completed run.

A touch timer counted scrolls as taps, outlived a trip to full screen, and
never fired for screen reader or keyboard users. The WebView's outer relay
page is the app frame's parent, so it reads navigator.userActivation like
web does and marks each relayed message; full screen needs that mark.

Add browser evidence for the changed web fullscreen gate.

apps/web/src/components/chat/McpAppFrame.tsx now requires frame focus and navigator.userActivation.isActive before entering fullscreen. The reported Android checks do not exercise this web path, and no focused web test covers it. Add a browser check or focused test for load/retry requests, an in-frame user action, and fullscreen exit.

Web verification for the gap in the review request.

Tested the actual web dev client at PR head e515c3daa87c873983f8af488a18ef4299f37e50, on Windows, with a compact 620 × 820 CSS-pixel viewport. The checkout has no tracked source changes. The test uses an isolated .t3 home and a synthetic, completed thread fixture. No production thread was copied and no provider turn was started.

The synthetic MCP app uses the real JSON-RPC ui/initialize / ui/request-display-mode bridge through McpAppFrame. It requests fullscreen on initialization and every 1.2 seconds, and has a separate button for a deliberate user click. The recording shows:

  1. Opening/reloading the thread keeps the app inline. Repeated automatic requests also stay inline.
  2. Clicking the in-app fullscreen button with a real browser input opens fullscreen (USER CLICK → fullscreen).
  3. Clicking T3's Exit full screen returns to the thread. Subsequent automatic requests stay inline, and thread navigation/composer remain available. No app restart is needed.

The 35-second recording was inspected at the inline, fullscreen, and post-exit stages. Thread/run/message/tool-item fixture payloads also decode successfully against this revision's contracts.

pr18548-web-fullscreen.mp4

Synthetic MCP app source (rename to .html when using as an MCP app resource).

Scope: this verifies the web McpAppFrame behavior requested by the review. The unavailable/reconnecting state is deliberately simulated; this does not verify a live Blender connection, the native Windows title-bar overlap, or the corrected iOS client. It is not a release/install verification. Our own iOS report still has TestFlight version 2.0.0 without its exact build number.

Ran the McpAppFrame change in the web dev build (Chromium) with a test app that asks for full screen on load and every 2 seconds, and has its own full-screen button. Recordings are in the description under "Proof (web dev build)", with main as the before.

  1. The load request and every retry are answered inline; the app stays in the thread. On main the same app opens full screen on load.
  2. Clicking the app's "Open full screen" button opens full screen, so the document.activeElement + navigator.userActivation gate lets a real click through.
  3. After "Exit full screen", the next seven retries are answered inline and it stays exited. On main the next retry takes the page back within a second.

Not run on the Windows desktop build; desktop renders the same component. The branch is updated from main. Test Web fails on two tests this PR doesn't touch (WorkflowOpeningBlock and AttachmentFilePreview); they fail the same way on other open PRs right now.

…ll screen

An app can focus its own frame, so the click that left full screen, the
click that opened the thread, or any other click or key press on the page
left activation it could use to ask for full screen again without a tap in
the app. Full screen now waits until five seconds after the last page
input, counting from mount, so only a tap in the app opens it.
