Reopening Connections after joining or changing a Tailscale network can keep showing cached IP and MagicDNS endpoints. Cache the full Tailscale status by the sorted interface address set, retaining the 60-second cache while addresses stay unchanged. Different address sets receive separate lookups, including concurrent refreshes.

The renderer snapshot lifetime fix is already on main via #16026, so this revision keeps those files unchanged and completes the desktop service fix. DNS-only changes with identical addresses still use the existing TTL.

Closes #15751.

Verification:

  • Focused desktop and renderer suites: exact-main production 1 failed / 20 passed; takeover 21 passed. Original PR had 17 cases; current main has 20. Removed three duplicated renderer additions and retained one desktop regression.
  • Desktop typecheck, targeted lint, formatting and diff checks pass.
  • Before/after headless integration proof: production service, real child processes, controlled Tailscale CLI and interface snapshots. Main misses the newly connected endpoints; this head refreshes IP and DNS on each change and reuses cached status on unchanged reads. No host network changes or live user state.
  • Independent full-diff Codex and Claude reviews: one round, no actionable findings at 6ae853de35. Claude also verified cache interruption and overlapping-key behavior against the installed Effect implementation.

This remaining diff changes a desktop service, so screenshots are not applicable. Live Electron reopening, physical network switching, a real Tailscale daemon, macOS permission prompts, Windows, iOS and Android were not verified on this headless Linux machine.

Credit to @lnieuwenhuis for the original fix in #15840. Maintainer takeover preserves the contributor commits and merges current main without rewriting history.

Implementation and integration: Codex gpt-6.1-sol (high) in T3 Code; tests: Codex gpt-6-astra (high); adversarial reviews: Codex gpt-6-sol (high) and Claude claude-opus-5-5 (high).

Move keepAlive from the SWR wrapper to the source atom so the wrapper remounts when Connections reopens and revalidates a stale snapshot, while the previous snapshot still renders immediately. Fixes pingdotgg#15751.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 6ae853d

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped desktop bug fix that refreshes Tailscale endpoint status only when interface addresses change while preserving the existing TTL cache otherwise. The production change is isolated and covered by regression tests, with no schema, default, deployment, security, or static-analysis implications.

📝 Walkthrough

The desktop endpoint provider now invalidates cached Tailscale status when network interfaces change. The frontend keeps its loaded endpoint snapshot alive while allowing stale snapshots to revalidate.

Changes: Desktop network access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tailscale status refresh
apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopServerExposure.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopServerExposure.test.ts
The provider derives a key from non-internal Tailscale IPv4 addresses and invalidates cached Magic DNS status when the key changes. A test checks that changed interfaces trigger a status reread and unchanged interfaces use the cached status.
Snapshot lifetime and stale revalidation
apps/web/src/state/desktopNetworkAccess.ts, apps/web/src/state/desktopNetworkAccess.test.ts
The atom keeps its loaded snapshot alive before applying SWR. Tests cover revalidation after 30,001 ms, snapshot reuse after 10,000 ms, and explicit refresh.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a1195

No merge-blocking issue is established; the change is ready for normal validation and merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a1195

The change refreshes connection information without changing network-access permissions or automatically enabling network exposure. No security regression was identified in the reviewed paths, but overlapping reads, interrupted refreshes, and recovery after refresh failures remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed change affects endpoint metadata for the local desktop service and its renderer. It can reveal newly connected private-network addresses through existing getters, but the changed path does not itself create listener reachability or enable Tailscale Serve.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected inputs remain operating-system interface data and local Tailscale status. Status refresh uses fixed status --json arguments; the new address key controls cache invalidation rather than command construction. This does not establish a new caller-controlled command-execution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Connections subscribes to the desktop snapshot only when the desktop bridge exists and the existing local-backend management permission gate permits it. Serve setup sends an enabled flag and validated port, not an advertised hostname or URL. Endpoint metadata therefore does not select the target of that privileged mutation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The desktop cache retains its 60-second TTL and converts status-read errors to absent DNS metadata. Existing status and HTTPS probe operations have timeouts. These bound ordinary read failures, but do not resolve the unverified concurrent-invalidation and refresh-recovery semantics.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #15751 requires Connections to show current addresses after reopening with a stale snapshot. desktopNetworkAccess.ts now keeps the source snapshot alive and allows the SWR wrapper to unmount. Its regression test verifies that reopening after 30,001 ms keeps the old snapshot visible and then loads a newly returned Tailscale endpoint. Tests also cover reopening within the stale period and explicit refresh. DesktopServerExposure.ts invalidates the cached MagicDNS status when Tailscale IPv4 addresses change; its test verifies the new HTTPS endpoint appears and unchanged reads reuse the cache.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The renderer changes and their tests directly implement issue #15751. The desktop cache invalidation and test address the same Tailscale connection scenario for the MagicDNS endpoint, while retaining the status TTL during steady state. No unrelated change is evident in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, scope, linked issue, verification steps, limitations, and agent attribution. It does not use the template headings for Problem, Change, and Scope and approval, and it reports one failed focused production test without identifying the failing case, but the required information is mostly present.

Assert that remount publishes the refreshed endpoint list.

Both mocks return the same fixtures on every call. The snapshot assertion runs immediately after remount, and the later wait checks only loader call counts. The test can pass without checking whether refreshed endpoint addresses reach the observable snapshot. Return a different endpoint list on the second load and assert that registry.get(atom) exposes it.

Addressed CodeRabbit's nitpick in 4fb6931: the second endpoint read now returns a new Tailscale endpoint and the test asserts it reaches the snapshot. It fails against the old atom composition and passes with this change.

The 60 s tailscale status cache kept serving a status read before Tailscale
connected, so a refreshed endpoint list showed the new Tailscale IP but not
the Tailscale HTTPS endpoint. Invalidate the cache when the host's Tailscale
interface addresses change; steady state still spawns the CLI at most once
per TTL.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch ssh-relay-remote-09. I will resolve current-main conflicts, trim the regression tests, independently rebuild the endpoint refresh fix, and run two reviews. Follow-up commits will stay on this PR; no merge.
