ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This changes the existing MCP model-configuration path so an active turn may be interrupted, persisted with a continuation message, and restarted using a different selection. Because this is a substantial, provider-dependent runtime behavior change rather than a contained test or documentation update, human review is warranted. Digging into this deeper--I think I might have missed a rather delayed scheduled task tool call? I see one of my threads did successfully resume but I may have gotten caught off by the big red warning. I also don't love the way this sends a user message just to resume a thread... |

Problem
t3_thread_configurecan stop its own active turn without continuing the user's request. On the pinned main revision, switching Codex provider instances detaches the caller and leaves the run interrupted. A same-instance model update instead saves the new selection while the active turn keeps using its old model.Fixes #15300.
Change
Route the tool through
ThreadManagementService.configureModelSelection. A changed active selection uses the existingrestart_activecommand to persist the requested selection and an agent-authored continuation before interrupting the provider. The replacement attempt continues the unfinished request in the same run.Compare against the active run's actual selection, including options, so repeating an already-active selection is a no-op even when option order differs. Idle threads retain ordinary selection behavior. Providers without interrupt/restart support reject before changing state. The tool description explains the restart and possible interrupted tool result.
Scope and approval
Maintainer direction is pending. The issue triage permits either safely rejecting an active model change or replaying the unfinished request. This PR proposes replay through the existing
restart_activecapability. Julius requested an explicit direction decision; there is no linked maintainer approval for that choice yet.The change adds no settings, wire contracts, or provider implementations. Manual composer selection behavior is unchanged; the stale composer selection in #15195 is separate.
The service path applies to MCP callers from all clients and connection modes. Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, and ACP adapters already support restart steering; Claude and Pi reject this active-turn operation under their existing capability policy.
Verification
Archived-thread review follow-up: the new integration regression failed before the guard because configure persisted restart and continuation events after archive while detach work was still queued. Configure now rejects archived threads before evaluating the selection, leaving the existing run and full projection/event sequence unchanged. The actual MCP tool returns
thread_not_sendablewith the public archived-thread message.vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/SelectionRestart.integration.test.ts apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/core.test.ts: all 42 tests passed. Scoped lint/format, server-only typecheck, andgit diff --checkpassed.Merged main at
f23d0084without rewriting the PR branch. Configure now goes through the shared dispatch guard added by feat(settings): providers can be turned on or off per project #17879. A project-disabled target returns a publicinvalid_requestwhile leaving the current running turn, provider selection, projection, and event sequence intact.vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/SelectionRestart.integration.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadManagementService.test.ts apps/server/src/relay/AgentAwarenessRelay.test.ts apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/core.test.ts: all 100 tests passed. The disabled-provider case passed again after strengthening its assertions. Scoped lint/format, server-only typecheck, and the PR diff whitespace check passed.Bot review follow-up: MCP configuration preserves public dispatch rejection details, returns
thread_not_sendablewhen there is no restartable turn, and sanitizes internal service/storage causes. All 20 core MCP tests pass, including five actual tool-response regression cases; scoped lint/format and server typecheck pass.54 tests passed across
SelectionRestart.integration.test.ts,ThreadManagementService.test.ts, andAgentAwarenessRelay.test.ts. The seven new integration scenarios cover saved-versus-active model selection, options-only changes, provider changes, unchanged/reordered options, idle threads, unsupported restart, and preparing runs. Assertions use effect-worker draining and persisted events. The seven new cases passed again after tightening event synchronization.Server typecheck, lint and formatting for the five changed files, server-workspace export analysis, and
git diff --checkpassed.Real Codex before/after runs in the T3 Browser panel, using isolated development state on macOS. Identical prompt: switch from Codex Luna to the alternate Codex instance on Sol low, then write a four-line poem. Before: interrupted with no poem, still terminal more than 12 minutes later. After: automatic replacement attempt on Sol low and a completed poem, with no follow-up user message. Runtime selections were checked in the isolated database; the composer can still display its stale selection (regression: same-instance (opencode) model switch on mobile still leaves desktop composer stale on Orchestrator v2 #15195).
Other provider binaries and native mobile were not manually exercised; unsupported-provider rejection is covered by the integration test.
Additional delayed-continuation audit on the unchanged base
cfdff56f: kept the dev server running and sampled the database every five seconds through 99 seconds after the configure event. The run stayed interrupted with one attempt, no follow-up message, zero scheduled tasks, and no pending/running outbox effects. The configure command emitted only selection-change and session-detach events and one detach effect. The separate server-restart recovery path does not apply to this interrupted run. Timestamped observations · Final screenshot. The Browser tab was closed during this additional run, so its video export was unavailable; database observation continued independently.Sanitized before/after run state
