Closes #489

The phrasings from #406's final test, handled in sentient/tasks/scripts.py:

  • "Don't notify me at night, but tell me about every change" now gives changed. Two matches ran past the comma. The don't tell/notify me … every change alternative of _NOTEWORTHY_REQUEST picked noteworthy. With that bounded, the notify me … change alternative of _EVERY_CHANGE_REQUEST started at "notify me" and swallowed the whole sentence as one negated match, so the "tell me about every change" after the comma was never seen. Both now stop at the end of a clause through a shared _WITHIN_CLAUSE: a comma or semicolon, or ./!/? followed by a space. A URL's dots don't end it, so "Tell me when https://example.org/events changes" still matches.
  • "Ignore all the tiny changes", "Ignore all trivial changes", "Don't bother with all the minor changes", "Please don't bother me with every little change" now give noteworthy. tiny and trivial join minor/small/little, "don't bother (me) with" joins ignore/skip/don't, and the determiners may include every.
  • "Could you tell me about the changes today?" now gives no preference. The tell me … changes alternative skips "about/of the (…) changes", the way it already skipped "what/which changes", because that asks about particular changes and not for every future one.

Tests in tests/tasks/test_scripts_triggers_retry.py: the six phrasings are added to the _change_preference table, and a new test_planner_default_reads_the_new_phrasings checks three of them through planner_default on a changed whole-page script. 8 of the new cases fail on main and the file passes (92 tests). tests/tasks passes, the #406 cases included, and ruff check sentient tests is clean (Python 3.12, Linux). I didn't do a real run against a model: these are pure parsing changes.

Changelog: changes/489.fixed.md.

Note: I used Claude Code while working on this.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved recognition of requests to receive only important changes or every change.
    • Better handles requests to include minor updates and phrases such as “don’t bother me with tiny updates,” while keeping unrelated clauses from affecting notification preferences.
    • Distinguishes future notification requests from questions or reports about changes that already happened; general questions about today’s changes no longer select every-change notifications.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for interpreting common watch-task phrasing.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for combined preferences, ambiguous wording, and one-off questions.

The "don't tell/notify me" and "tell me ... changes" matches stop at the end of a clause, tiny/trivial and "don't bother (me) with" read as asking for important changes only, and "tell me about the changes" no longer asks for every change. Closes existence-master#489.

Explanation

The parser changes, added preference cases, planner tests, regression tests, and changelog entry support issue #489. The added handling for future-facing tell me about the changes requests and negated ignore or skip wording distinguishes the required past-question case from notification requests. No unrelated change is shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #489 requires planner_default tests for the four added noteworthy phrasings, the mixed notification sentence, and the question about today’s changes. The implementation and the _change_preference table include all cases. The planner test covers the mixed sentence, one noteworthy phrasing, and the question, but it does not cover Ignore all the tiny changes, Ignore all trivial changes, or Don't bother with all the minor changes. Existing #406 cases remain in the parameterized table.

Resolution

Add planner_default assertions for the three uncovered #489 noteworthy phrasings. Keep the existing #406 regression cases.

…ation wording

"notify me about the changes" now only counts as a request for every change when the same message has no important-changes preference, so "Only important changes; notify me about the changes on this page" stays noteworthy. Explicit wording like "tell me about every change" still wins.

"Don't ignore minor changes; notify me about changes on this page" matched "ignore minor changes" inside the negation, so the message counted as an important-changes preference. A preceding don't, do not or never now keeps ignore/skip from matching.

Thanks @bercedev, and welcome! Picking up two of our good first issues on your first day (#489 here and #488 in #494), and signing the CLA right away, is great. We test every change end to end before merging, so I'm running both on a real engine now and will follow up with reviews.

Welcome @bercedev, and thank you! This is a really careful first PR. I ran every phrasing from #489 and all of #406's earlier cases through planner_default, plus a real qwen3:8b watch task:

  • all six #489 phrasings now come out right;
  • nothing from #406 regressed;
  • qwen's watch kept changed, then noteworthy, then noteworthy, as expected. 🎉

One small thing: the "about/of the changes" exclusion (scripts.py ~532) also catches requests about the future. "Tell me about the changes as they happen", "…from now on", "…going forward" and "Tell me about the new changes every time" used to mean every change and now give no preference. Could the exclusion apply only to questions or one-off times ("today", "so far", "yesterday", a trailing "?")? Or could "tell me about the changes" go through your _CHANGE_NOTIFICATION_REQUEST path, like "notify me about the changes"? A test for "Tell me about the changes as they happen" → changed would pin it down.

Optional: "Don't ignore minor changes" could count as every change. Thanks again, this is lovely work!

…ss it asks about the past

"Tell me about the changes as they happen" (from now on, going forward, every time) asks for every change, like "notify me about the changes", so it now goes through the same delivery path. A one-off time (today, so far, since Monday, ...) or a trailing question mark still keeps it a question about past changes. "Don't ignore minor changes" now counts as a request for every change.

Thanks a lot for testing it this thoroughly, @itsskofficial! Both points are in 33d26c0.

  • "Tell me about the changes" now goes through the _CHANGE_NOTIFICATION_REQUEST path, like "notify me about the changes". So it means every change, and an "only important changes" earlier in the same message still decides. It stays a question about past changes only when a one-off time follows in the same clause (today, tonight, yesterday, so far, just now, earlier, lately, recently, this morning/week/…, last …, since …) or the message ends with ?.
  • "Don't ignore minor changes" (also do not/never, ignore/skip) now counts as every change.

New cases: "Tell me about the changes as they happen / from now on / going forward", "Tell me about the new changes every time" and "Don't ignore minor changes" → changed. "Tell me about the changes so far / since Monday" and "Tell me about the changes on the page?" → no preference. "Only important changes; tell me about the changes as they happen" → noteworthy. Two of them are also in test_planner_default_reads_the_new_phrasings. The 7 new changed cases fail on the previous commit. tests/tasks/test_scripts_triggers_retry.py: 112 passed, and ruff check sentient tests (0.16.7) is clean.

…d scope its question mark to the clause

"Tell me about the changes that were made" has no time word but asks about past changes, so past-tense wording (that were/have been/happened, were made) now counts like a one-off time. The question-mark check looked at the end of the whole message, so "Tell me about the changes as they happen. Can you do that?" lost its request; it now looks only at the request's own clause.

Thanks @bercedev, re-tested at 16973b8 and it works:

  • "Tell me about the changes" with as they happen, from now on, going forward or every time now means every change;
  • past-tense questions stay one-off;
  • "Don't ignore minor changes" asks for everything.

All the earlier #406 and #489 cases still pass (208 checks), and qwen3:8b on a real engine moved the watch exactly as expected. Approving and merging!
