What and why

Closes #370.

Changing an existing page watch in task chat to “tell me about any change” can leave the saved condition as noteworthy, because the default selection reads only the original request. Include user chat messages in that decision and exclude assistant messages. Also retain importance qualifiers with one intervening word, such as “important page changes” and “significant price changes.”

Adds regression coverage and an Unreleased changelog entry. Prepared with AI assistance using Codex (gpt-6.1-sol).

Draft status: local implementation and validation are complete. Hosted CI has not run (action_required), and the CLA check awaits the human contributor’s agreement. Final independent review found no code/style/security blocker and judged the test evidence adequate, but withheld ready approval while those external requirements remain unresolved.

How I tested it

Exact published tree on upstream base 0bada12de8fb0e0142de2a4699fd93613c4cb4d7:

  • PYTHONPATH=. python -m pytest -q tests/tasks: 315 passed in the configured coding sandbox.
  • python -m ruff check sentient tests packaging: passed.
  • git diff --check --cached: passed.
  • Full engine suite, Python 3.12.14 / Linux ARM64: 2,406 passed, 17 skipped, zero failures or errors. Used four workers and a 300-second per-test timeout, with the declared CI dependency groups. The independent container ran as a non-root user with external networking disabled, a read-only source mount, no published ports, and no host credentials or Docker socket.
  • Skips: 14 browser cases because Chrome/Edge are unavailable, one Docker-dependent case because no Docker socket is exposed inside the container, and two Windows-specific cases.
  • Real local qwen3:8b through actual task chat: “Actually tell me about any change at all on that page” saves changed. Temporary state and synthetic example.org task; the plan remained approval-pending and no generated script was executed.

Regression evidence on the original base: the new test selection failed three cases before the fix. A real local qwen3 planner proposed changed, but the app saved noteworthy; after the fix it saved changed. The same model acceptance check passed again on the refreshed base.

The first container invocation had 17 fixture errors because Docker’s temporary filesystem blocked the tests’ fake Claude launcher. Making only that ephemeral test directory executable allowed the full suite above to pass; no source, dependency declaration, coding-sandbox or network-permission changes were needed. Earlier host-sandbox failures and the corrected container-startup results are preserved locally.

Checklist

  • Regression tests added; task tests pass
  • ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean
  • Full local engine suite completed, with skips disclosed above
  • Independent read-only code/style review completed; no code findings
  • Hosted CI completed
  • Human contributor CLA requirement cleared
  • No desktop/API contract change; docs/API.md does not need updating
  • No keys, tokens or personal data added

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Watch reporting preferences now reflect the latest user request. “Any change” selects updates for every change, while requests for important or significant changes select a quieter, noteworthy-only check.
    • Ordinary interval edits and questions no longer change which updates are reported. When multiple preferences are provided, the latest user preference takes precedence; assistant messages do not set the preference.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how watch reporting preferences affect update notifications.

📝 Walkthrough

Task condition selection now receives the original prompt, clarification answers, and user chat as separate messages. For whole-page web_fetch scripts, the planner uses the newest explicit change preference to retain changed or select noteworthy.

Changes: Watch condition defaults

Watch chat now keeps "any change" requests as intended. Two phrasings are still misread. "Only important changes, not every change" can enable every-change notifications. A request phrased as a question, such as "Can you tell me about every change?", is ignored. Both are narrow and users can work around them by rephrasing. The change is mergeable, with small follow-up fixes recommended.

Explanation

Issue #370 requires user chat messages in watch-condition detection, exclusion of assistant messages, one intervening word in importance qualifiers, and regression tests. The diff adds user-only chat collection, passes separate messages to planner_default, and recognizes phrases such as important page changes and significant price changes. Tests cover user and assistant roles, qualifier phrases, preference order, unrelated edits, and clarification precedence. The reported qwen3:8b check also confirms the chat flow saved changed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed service and planner code directly implement issue #370. The tests verify the new watch-preference behavior. changes/370.fixed.md documents that behavior. No unrelated dependency, public contract, or product-area changes appear in the whole-PR diff.

Thanks @syedmustafan, and welcome! I've approved the CI run. We test every change end to end before merging (a real engine with qwen3:8b), so I'm running that on this branch now and will come back with a review.

Thanks @syedmustafan, this fixes the case from the issue. I tested it on qwen3:8b with a real engine:

Message in the task's chat Stored
"Watch http://127.0.0.1:8783/events.html for new events" noteworthy ✓
"Actually tell me about any change at all on that page" changed ✓ (main stores noteworthy)

Two small things before merge:

  1. Every chat message is checked now, so ordinary edits count as "any change". I called planner_default with a whole-page watch on noteworthy and the planner proposing changed. Each of these keeps changed where main corrects it to noteworthy:

    • "Change it to check every 30 minutes" ("change" used as a verb)
    • "Thanks for everything"
    • "Anything else you need from me?"
    • an older "any change" followed by a newer "only important changes"

Could you use only the newest user message that talks about changes (newest wins), and not count "change" used as a verb (change it / change the time)?

  2. _script_request (sentient/tasks/service.py, from #375) already joins the request, the chat and the answers to clarifying questions. _default_condition could reuse it instead of building its own list.

Also: in the real run, "only important changes please" after "any change" stayed changed. Once a task is on changed, planner_default returns early (scripts.py, the previous check), so it is never looked at again. If the newest message asks for important changes, switching back to noteworthy would be great. That's fine as a follow-up if you'd rather keep this PR small.

Nit: the CHANGELOG entries around yours start with a short bold sentence, e.g. "- Changing a watch in chat sticks. ...".

@itsskofficial All requested fixes are now complete, including the two valid follow-up findings from CodeRabbit.

  • Change-preference detection now considers separate user messages and uses the newest relevant one.
  • Within one message, the final explicit preference wins (for example, “important changes, actually any change” selects every-update notifications).
  • Ordinary edits (for example, “change it/the time”) and unrelated “anything/everything” messages do not request every update.
  • A newer “only important changes” request switches an existing changed watch back to noteworthy.
  • _default_condition reuses _script_request; clarification answers now come before later task-chat messages, preserving the newer chat request’s priority.
  • The changelog text now lives in changes/370.fixed.md, following the current per-change entry convention.

Regression coverage was added for all of the above. Ruff, Python compilation, direct preference-case checks, and diff checks pass. The focused pytest file could not run in this fresh checkout because its dependencies are not installed.

Exclude negated change phrases from preference detection.

For a whole-page watch, _change_preference matches Only important changes as noteworthy, then matches the trailing change in not every change as changed. The later match wins, so the planner can save changed instead of noteworthy.

Small heads-up, @syedmustafan: we just switched changelog entries to one file per change (#418). Instead of editing CHANGELOG.md, add changes/370.fixed.md with your line, e.g. **Changing a watch in chat sticks.** .... The issue number gets added automatically. CONTRIBUTING.md has the details. Sorry for the moving target!

Thanks @syedmustafan, this is much better! Real run on qwen3:8b with a real engine:

Message in the watch's chat Stored
(create the watch) noteworthy ✓
"Actually tell me about any change at all on that page" changed ✓
"only important changes please" back to noteworthy ✓ (main can't do this)
"Change it to check every 30 minutes" left alone ✓

Calling planner_default directly, "Change it…", "Thanks for everything", "Anything else…?" and an older "any change" followed by a newer "important changes" all behave now. Reusing _script_request is great too.

Two things left before merge:

  1. Questions about changes count as asking for every change (sentient/tasks/scripts.py, _CHANGE). In the real run, "Has anything changed on that page?" switched a noteworthy watch to changed, and that's probably the most common thing people type in a watch's chat. Calling it directly, "What changed on the page?", "Change to every hour", "I changed my mind…", "Change of plans…" and "Can you change how often it checks?" do the same. Main ignores chat messages, so these are new.

Could the "any change" side require a positive request, i.e. any/every/all/whenever + change/update, or "tell me about … changes"? Messages ending in "?" could be skipped entirely.

  2. "Ignore minor changes" should count for noteworthy. "Ignore minor changes, I only care about new events" stayed changed in the real run, and "Only tell me about important stuff. Schedule changes are fine" and "only important updates" still aren't picked up. Treating ignore/skip/don't + minor/small/little changes, and important + stuff/updates, as votes for noteworthy would cover these.

The one Windows CI failure (test_stuck_runs.py) isn't from your change. It's a known-flaky test, and I've re-run it.

@itsskofficial Addressed in 25505a4.

  • Questions and incidental uses of “change” no longer alter a watch’s notification condition.
  • Switching to every-update notifications now requires an explicit request (for example, any/every/all changes, “whenever”, or a notification verb).
  • “Ignore minor changes” and “important updates/stuff” now select the important-changes check.

Added regression coverage for each example from the review. Ruff, compilation, direct matcher cases, and diff checks pass; the focused pytest file remains unavailable in this fresh checkout because dependencies are not installed.

Thanks @syedmustafan, this direction looks right! Before I re-test, CI shows one regression on both Linux and Windows: tests/tasks/test_scripts_triggers_retry.py::test_planner_watch_defaults_whole_pages_to_important_changes with "Tell me when https://example.org/events changes" now stores noteworthy instead of changed.

"Tell me when changes" (and probably "whenever it changes" / "if it changes") is an explicit request to hear about any change, so it should still count. Only questions ("Has anything changed?") and edits ("Change it to every hour") should be ignored. Could you widen the explicit-request pattern for that case? I'll re-test on a real engine as soon as CI is green.

@itsskofficial Addressed the latest review and CI regression in 6a6d0bf4.

  • “Tell me when changes”, “whenever it changes”, and “if it changes” remain explicit every-update requests.
  • Explicit request questions such as “Can you tell me about every change?” and “Could you notify me of any change?” now work, while informational questions remain ignored.
  • Negated phrases such as “Only important changes, not every change” keep the quieter noteworthy condition.

Added regression cases for all of these. Ruff, Python compilation, direct matcher checks, and diff checks pass.

Thanks @syedmustafan, this round fixes everything I asked for! CI is green and the CI case is back.

Calling planner_default directly:

  • all nine questions and edits are ignored;
  • "Tell me when changes", "whenever it changes", "if it changes" and "any change at all" count;
  • the three "important" messages pick noteworthy.

On a real engine with qwen3:8b:

Message Stored
(create the watch) noteworthy
"Actually tell me about any change at all on that page" changed
"Has anything changed on that page?" stays changed
"only important changes please" noteworthy
"Change it to check every 30 minutes" left alone

🎉

One last small thing: questions with any/all next to change or update still count (scripts.py ~510-516; the ? check at ~530 only applies when nothing matched). In the real run, "Any updates?" switched a noteworthy watch to changed, and that's probably the most common thing people type in a watch's chat. "Are there any changes on the page today?" and "Were there any updates since yesterday?" do the same. Could a message ending in "?" count as any change only when it uses a request verb ("tell me", "notify me", "let me know", "alert me")? That keeps "Can you tell me about every change?" working.

Tiny optional one: "Don't tell me about every change" on a changed watch stays changed. A negated every-change request could count for noteworthy.

@itsskofficial Addressed in 3e298cad.

  • Informational questions such as “Any updates?”, “Are there any changes today?”, and “Were there any updates since yesterday?” no longer alter the watch condition.
  • Request questions still work when they use “tell me”, “notify me”, “let me know”, “alert me”, or “report”.
  • The optional case is covered too: “Don’t tell me about every change” now selects noteworthy.

Added regression cases for these phrases. Ruff, Python compilation, direct matcher checks, and diff checks pass.

@itsskofficial I completed a full audit of every review summary, inline comment, and follow-up against the combined final diff.

The latest review is addressed in 9f4e8c08:

  • “Ignore all minor changes” and “Skip all the minor changes” now select noteworthy.
  • An any-change match nested inside a noteworthy instruction is ignored, so it cannot override the user intent.
  • The optional false triggers are covered too: “Thanks for all the updates” and “Can you tell me what changes were made?” no longer change the watch condition.
  • Regression tests cover all four phrases.

All earlier reported functional findings remain addressed. The previous audit also found and fixed the adjacent past-tense informational-question case in 452c67ef; explicit imperative and can/could/would/will request questions still work.

Validation for 9f4e8c08: focused task module 83 passed; Ruff and Python compilation passed; PR lint, changelog, CLA, secret scan, CodeRabbit, desktop typecheck/tests/build, and the full Ubuntu engine suite passed. The Windows engine suite also passed: 2,790 passed, 2 skipped, with no reruns. All required PR checks are green.

Thanks @syedmustafan, everything from every round passes now! I called planner_default directly with all the earlier cases and they all behave. On a real engine with qwen3:8b:

🎉

One small thing I found with a new phrasing: "Ignore all minor changes" (and "Skip all the minor changes") stores changed, the opposite of what was asked. The ignore rule (scripts.py ~507) allows only one word before "minor", so "all minor changes" matches the any-change rule (~520), and being later in the message, it wins. On a real engine, "Ignore all minor changes" followed by "Has anything changed?" saved changed. Could an any-change match that sits inside a noteworthy match, or right after ignore/skip, be skipped (e.g. add ignore/skip to _NEGATED_REQUEST_PREFIX)? A test for those two phrasings, and then I'll merge.

Optional: "Thanks for all the updates" and "Can you tell me what changes were made?" also count as any change. Skipping "thanks for…" and "what changes" would cover them.

  • The optional false triggers are fixed too: “Thanks for all the updates” and “Can you tell me what changes were made?” no longer alter the watch condition.
  • Regression tests cover all four phrases.

Final validation is green: focused task module 83 passed; Ruff and Python compilation passed; desktop typecheck/tests/build passed; Ubuntu engine suite passed; Windows engine suite passed with 2,790 tests passed, 2 skipped, and no reruns. All required PR checks are green, and the branch merges cleanly with current main.

Thanks @syedmustafan, this round nails it! 🎉 Every case from all rounds behaves when calling planner_default, including "Ignore all minor changes", "Skip all the minor changes", "Thanks for all the updates" and "Can you tell me what changes were made?".

On a real engine with qwen3:8b:

Message Stored
(create the watch) noteworthy
"any change at all" changed
"Any updates?" stays changed
"Ignore all minor changes" noteworthy
"Has anything changed?" stays noteworthy

CI is green and it merges cleanly. A few optional phrasings are collected in #489 for later. Approving and merging. Thanks for your patience across the rounds!
