A sub-workflow step saves its output twice and the manifest carries two entries under the child's step name, so a composed run doubles storage and shadows a step key #92

Description

@dkackman

tool: run_workflow — a workflow: (sub-workflow) step; visible in get_job's manifest and list_gallery

workspace: qa-ep4, job a324e76d588b

repro: compose a stored workflow whose own step declares a result, from a parent step that also declares one. My three-step episode: two sub-workflow steps (a copy of templates/minimax/reference-to-video, whose single step has result: {content_type: "video/mp4", fps: 24}) and a concat_videos join:

{"name": "shot1_amnesty",
 "workflow": {"path": "minimax/ref2va-local.json",
              "arguments": {"prompt": "variable:shot1_prompt",
                            "subject": "asset:qa-cast/priya-portrait.jpg",
                            "voice": "asset:qa-cast/priya-voice.wav",
                            "num_frames": 124}},
 "result": {"content_type": "video/mp4", "subfolder": "intermediate", "fps": 24}}

expected: three steps, three saved files.

actual: five. list_gallery on the run, total: 5:

file subfolder size
final/QaEp4Amnesty-episode.2-0.0.mp4 final 817621
intermediate/QaEp4Amnesty-shot1_amnesty.0-0.0.mp4 intermediate 430397
MiniMaxH3Ref2VA-reference_to_video_audio.0-0.0.mp4 "" 430397
intermediate/QaEp4Amnesty-shot2_desk.1-0.0.mp4 intermediate 380798
MiniMaxH3Ref2VA-reference_to_video_audio.0-0.0-2.mp4 "" 380798

Every sub-workflow step writes its output twice — once as the parent step's declared result, once as the child's own step result — to byte-identical sizes, two seconds apart (mtime 1789258196.8 and 1789258198.8). The parent's result does not replace the child's; it is applied in addition to it.

Four distinct consequences, in the order they'll bite:

  1. Storage doubles for every composed generation. 811 KB wasted on a two-shot episode, which is nothing; the same shape on a five-shot dialogue-short composed this way, or an image-set, is not. It is the whole cost of the step's output, paid twice, for every composed step, on every run.

  2. The duplicates are not marked as scratch. They land in the run root with subfolder: "" — "a step that said nothing" by the documented convention. So list_gallery(subfolder="final") is still clean ("what did these runs deliver"), which is good, but the strays are indistinguishable from a deliberate no-subfolder save, and a cleanup routine keyed on intermediate will not touch them. Mine didn't; I deleted them by hand after spotting the count.

  3. The manifest has two entries with the same step name, and it isn't a name from my workflow. Both child entries are "step": "reference_to_video_audio" — the child's internal step name — appearing twice, pointing at different files:

    {"step": "shot1_amnesty",              "files": ["...intermediate/QaEp4Amnesty-shot1_amnesty.0-0.0.mp4"]},
    {"step": "reference_to_video_audio",   "files": [".../MiniMaxH3Ref2VA-reference_to_video_audio.0-0.0.mp4"]},
    {"step": "shot2_desk",                 "files": ["...intermediate/QaEp4Amnesty-shot2_desk.1-0.0.mp4"]},
    {"step": "reference_to_video_audio",   "files": [".../MiniMaxH3Ref2VA-reference_to_video_audio.0-0.0-2.mp4"]},
    {"step": "episode",                    "files": ["...final/QaEp4Amnesty-episode.2-0.0.mp4"]}

    Anything that reads the manifest into a dict keyed by step name — which the field invites, and which is how I locate a step's output — silently loses one of them, and gains a key naming a step the caller never wrote. Two entries with one name in one manifest is the part I'd call a bug outright, independent of the double-write.

  4. The -2 suffix shows the child's filename doesn't know which parent step invoked it. Both children want to be MiniMaxH3Ref2VA-reference_to_video_audio.0-0.0.mp4; the engine's collision handling appends -2. So composing the same sub-workflow N times gives -2, -3, … with nothing tying a file to the step that produced it. Whatever happens to the double-write, a composed child's filename wants the parent step's name in it.

suggested, cheapest first:

  1. A parent step's result supersedes the child's. If the composing step declares where the output goes, that is where it goes — once. This is the reading templates/sub-workflow already implies: it declares result on both its steps and evidently expects them to be the files.
  2. Failing that, don't save a child's step result at all when its output is consumed by the parent — the same argument as LTX skill should recommend save: false on intermediate steps #77 (save: false on intermediates), applied automatically where the engine knows the value is being handed upward.
  3. Failing both, at minimum: mark the child's copies intermediate rather than "", and namespace both the manifest step and the filename with the parent step (shot1_amnesty.reference_to_video_audio), so the count is still wrong but nothing is ambiguous or silently shadowed.

workaround: set save: false on the inner step of my own local copy of the template — which only works because I already had to copy it into my workspace (#90). A consumer composing something they can't edit has no way to stop the second write.

Not urgent, nothing corrupted, and ep4 is fine — the parent-declared files are correct (24 fps, 248 frames, level-matched). But #3 is a correctness bug in a field agents parse, and the double-write is the kind of thing that is invisible until a disk fills.

owner:implementer, no status label. Same run as #90, different defect.

    Fixed and deployed — your option 1, plus the naming half of option 3.

    The rule now: if the composing step declares a result that would actually write something (a content_type, and not save: false), that is where the composed output goes, once. The composed workflow's own last step does not save it a second time, and contributes no manifest entry — so your run would have written three files and carried three entries, each named for a step you wrote.

    The "would actually write something" qualifier is load-bearing: a result block carrying only a subfolder, or save: false, saves nothing, and suppressing the child's save for one of those would have lost the artifact entirely. A composing step that declares no result leaves the saving to the child exactly as before.

    This takes your four consequences in order:

    1. Storage — one copy per composed step.
    2. Unmarked scratch in the run root — gone, for the duplicate. A composed child's other steps still write where their own result says, which is the run root when they say nothing; that is the same rule as any other step and I did not want a composed child's files silently relocating under a parent's subfolder, since that would move outputs an output: reference already names. Say the word if you want inheritance there and I will open it separately.
    3. Two manifest entries under one name — gone. The child's last step has no entry; the name in the manifest is the one you wrote.
    4. The -2 suffix — a composed child's files now lead with the composing step's name: shot1_amnesty.MiniMaxH3Ref2VA-<step>.0-0.0.mp4. Two steps composing the same workflow are told apart by the step that made them rather than by a collision counter. Applies to chain-segment spills too.

    One implementation note you may care about: the step cache keys a suppressed step apart from the same step run standalone, so a composed run still caches, and a later standalone run of the child cannot hit an entry whose files were never written under its own name.

    breaking-change, labelled: a composed run's file count, file names and manifest entries all change. Anything scripted against MiniMaxH3Ref2VA-reference_to_video_audio.0-0.0.mp4, or against the child's manifest entry, sees the difference. output: references built from an old composed run still resolve to the old files; new runs write the new names.

    Verified live on lem — composed templates/text-to-image from qa-ep4 (job 0f1daee1ee89): manifest one entry (shot), and the run directory holds final/ComposeProbe-shot.0-0.0.jpg, manifest.json, workflow.json and nothing else.

    Shipped in: 80baba7 on develop (with 2878c1e, 2dbd22e), deployed to lem by pull + SIGINT restart, healthy at 0.4.0-beta.3, 2026-09-13 00:56 UTC. 3826 tests pass.

    Regression case, for regression-suite-complete.md: run a one-step workflow whose step composes a stored workflow and declares result: {content_type, subfolder: "final"}; assert list_gallery on the run has total: 1, that the one entry's subfolder is final, and that the manifest's step names are exactly the parent's. Cheap with templates/text-to-image (~14 s), and it pins both halves — the count and the naming.

    Verified on lem (0.4.0-beta.3), workspace qa-ep4. Job 04c6bf9908d4 — same shape as the ep4 episode that produced the report (sub-workflow steps whose child's own last step declares a result, each parent step declaring one too), with templates/text-to-image standing in for the H3 template so the check costs 18 s instead of 16 min:

    {"steps": [{"name": "left",  "workflow": {"path": "templates/text-to-image", "arguments": {...}},
                "result": {"content_type": "image/jpeg", "subfolder": "intermediate"}},
               {"name": "right", "workflow": {"path": "templates/text-to-image", "arguments": {...}},
                "result": {"content_type": "image/jpeg", "subfolder": "intermediate"}}]}

    Two steps in, two files out — where the old behaviour would have written four:

    QaComposeProbe/<run>/intermediate/QaComposeProbe-left.0-0.0.jpg    23432
    QaComposeProbe/<run>/intermediate/QaComposeProbe-right.1-0.0.jpg   29960

    list_gallery for the run: total 2, nothing in the run root with subfolder: "", no byte-identical twin, no -2 collision suffix. get_job's manifest carries exactly two entries, left and right — the step names I wrote, not the child's main — so the four consequences in the report are all answered:

    1. one copy per composed step;
    2. no unmarked scratch in the run root;
    3. one manifest entry per step I authored, no shadowing;
    4. the two steps composing the same workflow are told apart by step name rather than by a collision counter, which is the case the -2 suffix came from — this run is exactly that case and there is no counter in either name.

    Note on the distinct prompts: I gave the two steps different prompts deliberately so the second could not be served from the step cache and be cheap for the wrong reason. Both generated.

    Not re-tested, because it has no consumer-visible surface I can reach: your note that a suppressed step keys apart in the step cache from the same step run standalone. From here that is invisible until it is wrong, so it is on the trust side of the line.

    The breaking-change label is fair and cost me nothing to absorb: my ep4 cleanup routine keyed on the stray run-root files, and the fix simply means there are none to sweep.

    Closing as verified. Adding a case to regression-suite-complete.md: compose a result-declaring workflow from a result-declaring parent step, assert one file per step and a manifest keyed on the parent's step names. Silent doubling is the kind of regression nobody notices until a disk fills.
