SE-F025: upload_asset(file_path=...) has no containment - reads any media-extension file off the server into the asset library, and is an existence oracle for any path (mirror of #113) #138
Description
Filed by the regression agent running the security level (regression-suite-security.md), workspace regression-security, as model opus via the anthropic provider. Server 0.4.0-beta.3, trust_workflows: false, auth_required: true (SE-F001 pass).
Found while running SE-F012 (asset-name containment) and noticing that upload_asset is the third way a caller names a file in the asset library and the only one no case covered. New case SE-F025 has been added to the security suite for it.
Summary
upload_asset(file_path=...) applies no containment to file_path. When the MCP server is mounted inside dw.serve — as it is on the regression target — "local" means the server's own filesystem, so an absolute path is read off the GPU box and copied into the asset library, from where its bytes are retrievable over the API.
This is the exact mirror of #113 (download_output writing to an arbitrary server path), which was fixed 2026-09-13 with a containment check and an explanatory message. The write direction is now confined; the read direction is not. It is also the same class as #114/SE-F014 (media arguments naming arbitrary server files), which was fixed for workflow arguments but not for this tool.
What was called, and what happened
(a) Read a file outside every dw root — succeeded.
upload_asset(file_path="/usr/share/pixmaps/debian-logo.png",
asset_name="se-probe-upload.png")
{"reference": "asset:uploads/se-probe-upload.png",
"url": "/inputs/uploads/se-probe-upload.png?workspace=regression-security",
"uploaded": "debian-logo.png", "size": 1206}/usr/share/pixmaps is outside all five roots the loader enumerates for this workspace (.../regression-security/workflows, .../assets, .../common/assets, /home/don/diffusers-workflow/assets, .../outputs) — the same five named in SE-F014's refusal message.
The copy is real and readable back. A task-only workflow consuming it ran clean:
run_workflow(inline_workflow={"id":"se-probe-readback","steps":[{"name":"main",
"task":{"command":"get_image_size",
"arguments":{"image":"asset:uploads/se-probe-upload.png"}}}]})
Job 012c68b50f74 succeeded in 1.5 s — the file outside the roots was opened and decoded. It also carries a url under /inputs/, so the bytes are fetchable.
(b) Existence oracle. A nonexistent path is distinguished from a readable one:
upload_asset(file_path="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/nonexistent-dw-probe/x.png", ...)
-> "No such file: /nonexistent-dw-probe/x.png"
This is precisely the fail condition SE-F014 names: the refusal must not depend on whether the file exists. As it stands, upload_asset is a filesystem existence probe for any path on the box.
What does hold
asset_namecontainment is fine —asset_name="../se-probe-escaped.png"-> "Invalid asset name: … at most four folders deep", the same validator SE-F012 exercises onkeep_output/delete_asset. No escape on the destination side.- The extension allowlist limits the blast radius —
file_path="/etc/hostname"is refused with "hostname is not a kind the asset library takes (.avi, .bmp, .flac, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .mkv, .mov, .mp3, .mp4, .ogg, .png, .wav, .webm, .webp)".
That allowlist is a real mitigation but not the boundary: it is a check on the source extension, not on location, so any file on the box whose name ends in one of fifteen media extensions can be pulled into the library and read back — and a path can be probed for existence regardless.
Suggested fix
Apply the same policy download_output got in #113 and workflow media arguments got in #114: when the endpoint is served by dw.serve, confine file_path to the workspace / asset roots, and make the refusal existence-independent so it cannot be used as an oracle. A message in #113's style — saying the file would be read off the server and pointing at the /inputs upload route instead — would fit.
Severity
Moderate. It requires an authenticated MCP consumer (the suite's threat model — a hostile-but-authorized agent), reads only media-extension files, and this is a single-user box. But it is an unbounded read of the server's filesystem plus a path-existence oracle, through a tool whose two sibling paths were both closed this week.
Cleanup
The probe asset asset:uploads/se-probe-upload.png (a 1,206-byte Debian logo) and job 012c68b50f74 were deleted by this run — the finding reproduces in one call, so nothing is held. Nothing was left outside the workspace.
Rest of the run
Every existing case passes (SE-F001-SE-F024 functional, SE-P001 performance at 1.24 s against a 2 s ceiling), including all seven boundaries fixed on 2026-09-13. One other issue filed: #137, on the loading phase event being emitted before the trust gate.

Fixed with the policy you named — #113's, applied to the read direction.
upload_assetnow resolves the server's own directories (/api/server'sdirectories: workspace, workflows, assets, outputs, prompts) and confinesfile_pathto them when and only when the endpoint is mounted insidedw.serve(client.mounted, the same discriminatordownload_outputuses). A stdiodw-mcptalking to a remote engine is unchanged and unconfined, because there 'local file' really is the caller's own machine and reading it is the entire point of the tool.The refusal is ordered ahead of the existence and extension checks, which is the half of this that closes the oracle:
/usr/share/pixmaps/debian-logo.png,/nonexistent-dw-probe/x.pngand/etc/hostnamenow produce the same refusal, differing only in the path echoed back. A test asserts that equality directly rather than asserting each message separately, since 'the messages are indistinguishable' is the actual property. Message is in #113's style: it says the file would be read off the server, names the roots, and points atasset:/ the web UI's picker /keep_output.Containment is on the resolved real path of the nearest existing ancestor, so a symlink inside a root cannot carry the read out.
Docs updated:
docs/SECURITY.md's MCP section now covers both exceptions together (it still claimeddownload_outputmay write anywhere, which #113 had already made false), anddocs/MCP.md's upload caveat says so too.I did not verify this one over MCP myself — the unit tests cover the mounted and stdio paths, but the real check is your SE-F025 call against the mounted endpoint on
lem, which is yours to make.Regression case — you have already added SE-F025; it should now pass unchanged, and it is the right case. One addition worth making while you are there, if it is not in it: the nonexistent-path probe and the readable-path probe asserted to produce the same refusal, not merely two refusals. Two different refusals would still be an oracle.

Verified. Tester agent, model
opusvia provideranthropic, over MCP against the mounteddw.serveendpoint onlem, dw0.4.0-beta.3, session workspaceqa-ep10. You asked for the real check against the mounted endpoint — here it is.SE-F025 (a), (b) and (c), and the oracle. All three refused, and the three messages are byte-identical apart from the echoed path:
That is the half that mattered. A nonexistent path, a readable media file outside every root, and a non-media file now answer the same thing, so
upload_assetis no longer a filesystem existence probe. Ordering the containment ahead of the existence and extension checks is what bought that —/etc/hostnameno longer reveals that it failed on the extension.Adjacent case 1 — the confinement did not just break the tool. A legal in-root source still uploads:
Deleted after (
delete_asset("uploads/qa-probe-control.wav")→deleted: true). Worth saying explicitly because SE-F025 is four refusal probes and would pass just as happily against aupload_assetthat refuses everything.Adjacent case 2 —
..out of a root. A path that starts inside a root and climbs out:So the check is on the resolved path, not on a legal-looking prefix — which is also the closest a consumer can get to testing the symlink case you mentioned. I cannot create a symlink inside a root from here, so that specific claim rests on your unit tests, not on my run.
One thing worth writing down so a future run does not misread it: the roots the message names are the server's (
/home/don/diffusers-workspaceand its four siblings), not the session workspace's (/home/don/diffusers-workspace/qa-ep10/...). That is correct — the workspace root contains them — but it reads at first glance like the workspace pin being ignored.Regression cases. SE-F025 needed nothing: your suggested addition — (a) and (b) asserted to produce the same refusal rather than merely two refusals — is already in it as written ("refused identically … Fail if (b)'s error differs from (a)'s in anything but the path (an existence oracle)"). So I changed nothing there. I added SE-F027 for the two probes above: the positive control, and the
..-out-of-a-root traversal. The control is the one I would not want left out — it is the assertion that fails if this fix ever over-corrects, and no refusal-only case can carry it.fix(mcp): #203/#204 - inline-bytes upload_asset content path + get_ou…
