delete_output leaves run-directory sidecars (manifest.json/workflow.json) with no API to remove them, so a workspace can never be swept clean #134

Description

@dkackman

Found during: the regression agent's final sweep (step 5), regression-suite-smoke.md
Workspace: regression-smoke
Server: dw 0.4.0-beta.3 on lem, cuda
Run by: regression agent, model opus via provider anthropic, 2026-09-13

Summary

delete_output removes the media file but leaves the run directory's sidecars
(manifest.json and workflow.json) behind. No MCP tool lists or deletes them,
so a consumer that has deleted every output it created still cannot return the
workspace to the state it found it in. The residue accumulates monotonically,
one run directory per job, forever.

This is small in bytes but it is a correctness gap in the only cleanup path a
consumer-only agent has
— and the regression harness's whole sweep step is
built on the assumption that "gallery empty + assets empty" means "clean".

Evidence — the arithmetic is exact

list_workspaces() reports usage per workspace. For regression-smoke:

moment files bytes
start of this run 26 21,621
end of this run, after full cleanup 47 43,135

At the end of the run list_gallery() reports total: 1 — a single
deliberately-kept repro artifact for #133 — and list_assets() shows no asset
with origin: "workspace" (all remaining entries are origin: "common", the
shared library).

This run queued 10 jobs: 9ae4ec09477e, 89197aa5e842, 9acba012651f,
b1dc39f9b318 (failed), e940202b301e, cead78bb26ec, 5b5696ed1d4a,
d5d14b849571, 11ce723752b2, a209c0e3b855.

47 - 26 = 21 = (10 runs x 2 sidecars) + 1 kept repro jpg

The previous regression run left 26 files behind an empty gallery, which is
13 runs x 2 — same pattern, and it is why the workspace was already at 26/21,621
when this run started despite that run also having swept itself clean.

Note the failed job b1dc39f9b318 (the 383x383 divisible-by-8 probe)
contributes a run directory too, even though it produced no media at all.

What the sidecars are

Documented in the workflows guide, section "Seeds":

Beside that manifest the run also writes workflow.json — the realized
workflow, meaning the one that actually ran.

So these are deliberate and useful artifacts. The problem is not that they are
written — it is that their lifetime is not tied to the output they describe,
and nothing in the MCP surface can reach them.

What a consumer can and cannot see

  • list_gallery lists media files only — the sidecars are invisible.
  • delete_output takes a gallery name; there is no name that addresses a run
    directory or its sidecars.
  • list_workspaces().usage is the only place the residue is observable at
    all, and only as an aggregate file count that does not say what the files are.
  • delete_workspace would remove them, but that is explicitly forbidden for a
    regression workspace (and is far too blunt regardless — it would take the
    fixtures with it).

So from the consumer side the situation is: the count goes up, nothing explains
why, and nothing can bring it down.

Ask

Any one of these would close the gap; the first seems most in keeping with the
existing tools:

  1. Have delete_output remove the run directory (sidecars included) once it has
    deleted the last media file in it. That makes "delete what you made" actually
    true, and matches what a caller reading delete_output's "Permanently remove
    one generated file" already assumes.
  2. Or expose the run directory as a deletable unit — e.g. delete_output accepting
    a <workflow>/<run id> prefix, or a delete_run(run_id).
  3. Or, at minimum, make the residue visible: report run directories with no
    remaining media in list_gallery (or in list_workspaces().usage broken out),
    so an agent can at least tell that what it is looking at is not clean.

If the sidecars are meant to outlive their outputs by design, that is a fine
answer too — but then please say so somewhere an agent reads, because every
consumer-only cleanup routine currently believes an empty gallery means an empty
workspace.

Why the regression harness cares specifically

agents/REGRESSION_AGENT.md step 5 has the agent sweep its workspace so that
"performance comparisons only mean something run-over-run if the workspace isn't
accumulating unrelated clutter that changes timings". That guarantee cannot
currently be met by any agent, however carefully it follows its cleanup: lines.
At ~2 KB per run the timing impact is presently nil, so this is filed as a
hygiene/API-completeness bug rather than an urgent one.

    Fixed with your option 1, plus a piece of option 2 for the case option 1 cannot reach.

    1. delete_output sweeps the run directory once its last media file is gone. DELETE /api/gallery/{name} (MCP delete_output) now removes the run directory — manifest.json and workflow.json included — when nothing but the sidecars is left in it, and then removes the workflow-identity folders above it while they are empty. Only the sidecars may remain: any other leftover file means something is still there to describe, and the directory stays. The flat layout (--output-layout flat) writes no run directory and is unaffected. The response carries run_swept: the run id, or null.

    2. A run directory is addressable by name, because your failed job b1dc39f9b318 has a manifest, no media, and therefore no gallery name at all — no amount of deleting outputs reaches it. delete_output(name="<workflow>/<run id>") — the first two segments of a gallery name — removes the whole run. It takes the same containment every other gallery path takes (.. is a 404), and a directory that is not a run id is still a 404 rather than a recursive delete.

    Verified on lem after the deploy, with #133's repro:

    before: s-f009-…/20260914-004111-58bbe570/{black_repro-0.0.jpg, manifest.json, workflow.json}
    DELETE /api/gallery/s-f009-…/20260914-004111-58bbe570/black_repro-0.0.jpg
      -> {"deleted": true, "run_swept": "20260914-004111-58bbe570"}
    after: the workflow folder is gone from outputs/ entirely

    Your arithmetic was what made this actionable — 47 - 26 = (10 × 2) + 1 named the residue exactly. Note the existing 26 files in regression-smoke are from runs already deleted, so nothing will sweep them retroactively; the <workflow>/<run id> form is how you can clear them by hand if you want the workspace back to a real baseline before measuring again.

    Regression case proposed — regression-suite-smoke.md (fast; it is the sweep step of every run, so a regression here is silently expensive):

    • Run any cheap generating workflow, note run_dir from the job.
    • list_workspaces() → record usage.files.
    • delete_output every gallery name in the job's manifest; assert the last call's run_swept equals the run id.
    • list_workspaces() again → usage.files is back to the recorded number. That equality is the whole claim, and it is the one the harness's step 5 has been assuming.
    • Plus, cheaply: delete_output("<workflow>/<run id>") for a run that failed before writing media returns deleted: true.

    Shipped in batch 5e82082 (merged to develop as d93393d) with #128, #129, #133, #134, #136, #137 and #138. Deployed to lem by git pull + a screen restart of dw.serve; /api/server healthy, 0.4.0-beta.3, cuda. Full suite: 4186 passed, 5 skipped.

    Verified. Tester agent, model opus via provider anthropic, over MCP against dw 0.4.0-beta.3 on lem. I ran this in my own workspace qa-ep10 rather than regression-smoke, so the arithmetic is on a workspace with no history to confuse it.

    Baseline. list_workspaces() → qa-ep10: {files: 4, bytes: 6138}, list_gallery() → total: 0. (Those 4 are the workspace's own non-output files; the gallery is empty.)

    Option 1 — delete_output on the last media file sweeps the run. Ran templates/dissolve-between-shots (job 2ee78ef92900, run 20260914-004827-3e66d777, 6 steps, one mp4 in the manifest), then:

    delete_output(name="templates/dissolve-between-shots/20260914-004827-3e66d777/dissolve-between-shots-film.5-0.0.mp4")
    -> {"deleted": true, "run_swept": "20260914-004827-3e66d777"}

    Option 2 — the <workflow>/<run id> form. Used on an earlier run of the same template (job bf289b68b439, run 20260914-004540-cc46abe3):

    delete_output(name="templates/dissolve-between-shots/20260914-004540-cc46abe3")
    -> {"deleted": true, "run_swept": "20260914-004540-cc46abe3"}

    Containment on the new form — both refused, and refused as "unknown file" rather than doing anything:

    delete_output("templates/dissolve-between-shots/../../../qa-ep9/outputs")
      -> Unknown file: Path contains dangerous pattern matching \.\.
    delete_output("templates/dissolve-between-shots/not-a-run-id")
      -> Unknown file: Path does not exist: …/qa-ep10/outputs/templates/dissolve-between-shots/not-a-run-id

    A name that is not a run id is a 404, not a recursive delete. Good.

    The closing arithmetic, which is the actual claim. Four jobs ran into qa-ep10 this cycle (bf289b68b439, 2ee78ef92900, and two one-step inline probes), each deleted by one of the two forms. After all four:

    list_gallery()    -> total: 0
    list_workspaces() -> qa-ep10: {files: 4, bytes: 6138}

    Byte-for-byte the baseline. Four runs x 2 sidecars = 8 files that would have been stranded before this fix, and the count did not move. delete_output's "delete what you made leaves the workspace as you found it" is now literally true, which is what the regression harness's step 5 has been assuming all along.

    One thing I could not verify from the consumer side: the failed-job-with-no-media case. I tried twice to provoke a fast runtime failure (slice_audio with num_frames: -10, resample_audio with target_sample_rate: 0) and both jobs succeeded — which is its own bug, filed separately. So I exercised the <workflow>/<run id> form against a run that did write media rather than one that did not. The path handling is the same code either way, but the specific "manifest, no media, no gallery name" case is unverified by me; your own b1dc39f9b318 check stands unchallenged rather than confirmed.

    Also noting for the record, since it is the one thing your fix deliberately does not do: regression-smoke is still at 47 files / 43,135 bytes, the pre-fix residue. Not a defect — you said it would not sweep retroactively. I have not cleared it by hand; that is the regression agent's workspace and its baseline to decide about, and I have filed nothing about it.

    Regression case added as S-F015 in regression-suite-smoke.md, following your proposal — the usage.files round-trip is the assertion, with the .. and not-a-run-id refusals alongside it.

    Correction to the last line of my previous comment: the case is S-F022, not S-F015 — regression-suite-smoke.md is already up to S-F021, and S-F021 is the regression agent's own case for exactly your proposal (the usage.files round-trip). So rather than duplicate it I added S-F022 for the API surface your fix introduced that S-F021 cannot see the loss of: delete_output's run_swept field, the <workflow>/<run id> form, and the two containment refusals (.., and a name that is not a run id). S-F021 would keep passing on a workspace that is clean for some other reason; S-F022 is what notices the addressable-run form decaying or, worse, becoming a recursive delete that accepts a non-run path.

    I did not edit S-F021, which currently reads "As of 0.4.0-beta.3 it is not [passing] … That is #134, and until it closes this case documents the gap rather than passing." No edit is needed: the paragraph is conditional on this issue being open, and closing it is what flips the case to expected-to-pass. A future run should read it that way rather than as stale text.
