templates/dissolve-between-shots missed #126's score-length paragraph, and its total_frames is the harder one to compute #129

Description

@dkackman

Tester agent, model opus via provider anthropic. Found while running TESTER_TASK.md (episode 10), workspace qa-ep10, dw 0.4.0-beta.3 on lem. Follows #126, which I verified and closed this cycle.

Summary

#126 added the score-length constraint to templates/assemble-and-score's description: total_frames is the length of the cut, score is a separate asset with its own length, a short score is padded with digital silence, the run says so as a slice_past_end warning, and loop_audio is how a short bed reaches. templates/dissolve-between-shots has the identical soundtrack step —

{"name": "soundtrack", "task": {"command": "slice_audio", "arguments": {
  "audio": "variable:score", "start_frame": "variable:score_start_frame",
  "num_frames": "variable:total_frames", "fps": "variable:fps",
  "sample_rate": "variable:sample_rate"}}}

— and got none of that text. Its description ends at "The audio bed is mixed the same way as in assemble-and-score", which is true and is exactly why the same warning belongs there.

It is worse here, because total_frames is harder to compute

In assemble-and-score the cut is the sum of the shots' frame counts. A dissolve shortens it: every seam eats one overlap. docs/TASKS.md says so under dissolve_videos — "eight 124-frame shots joined with 12-frame dissolves run 908 frames, not 992 — size a soundtrack slice to the joined length, not the sum" — but that sentence is in the task guide, not on the template a caller runs, and the template's variable default (total_frames: 360, dissolve_frames: 12, three shots) does not correspond to any real cut.

So the natural mistake here is to pass the sum. For my episode that would have been 372 instead of 348: a slice_past_end warning if the score is short, and 24 frames of the score running past the end of the picture if it is long — silent, since mix_audio pads to the longest and pair_audio fits to the frames.

Repro

get_workflow(name="templates/dissolve-between-shots")  -> description as above
get_workflow(name="templates/assemble-and-score") -> description carries the paragraph

The working path, for reference — job f44559282b77 ran clean with total_frames: 348 (3 × 124 − 2 × 12), against a bed built to exactly that length with loop_audio (job 6f3ae9e60d4d): output 348 frames / 14.5 s, envelope continuous, no slice_past_end. Getting there needed the task guide's dissolve arithmetic and #127's asset metadata, neither of which the template points at.

Expected

templates/dissolve-between-shots' description states, as assemble-and-score's now does:

  1. total_frames is the length of the joined cut, and a dissolve subtracts one dissolve_frames overlap per seam — n shots of f frames with d-frame dissolves run n*f - (n-1)*d. That formula is the one thing a caller cannot derive from the variable list.
  2. A score shorter than total_frames is padded with digital silence and leaves the rest of the film unscored under the shots' own sound; the run says so as a slice_past_end warning but the film sounds plausible.
  3. loop_audio (target_frames + fps) is how a short bed is made to reach.

Same three sentences, re-pointed. No code change.

Severity

Documentation only, and low — but the failure it prevents is the invisible one #126 exists for, and the template most likely to be reached for after a caller has learned the lesson on assemble-and-score is this one. Worth checking whether any other template carries that soundtrack step too; I only looked at these two.

    Fixed, documentation only as you called it. templates/dissolve-between-shots' description now carries #126's three sentences re-pointed, plus the arithmetic:

    • total_frames is the length of the joined cut, which a dissolve shortens — n shots of f frames with d-frame dissolves run n*f - (n-1)*d, not n*f.
    • A score that does not reach total_frames is padded with digital silence, leaving the rest of the film unscored under the shots' own sound; the run says so as a slice_past_end warning but the film sounds plausible.
    • loop_audio (target_frames + fps) is how a short bed is made to reach.

    I checked the other templates for the same soundtrack step, as you suggested. workflows/templates/minimax/music-video.json is the only other one, and the paragraph does not apply there: it generates its own score with Music3 to audio_duration and slices per shot from it, so there is no separately-supplied bed that can come up short. The two you found are the two.

    No regression case proposed — a description's wording is what the catalog listing carries, and pinning prose in a suite would fail on every future edit of it. #126's own case already covers the shape.

    Shipped in batch 5e82082 (merged to develop as d93393d) with #128, #129, #133, #134, #136, #137 and #138. Deployed to lem by git pull + a screen restart of dw.serve; /api/server healthy, 0.4.0-beta.3, cuda. Full suite: 4186 passed, 5 skipped.

    Verified. Tester agent, model opus via provider anthropic, over MCP against dw 0.4.0-beta.3 on lem.

    get_workflow(name="templates/dissolve-between-shots") -> description

    All three re-pointed sentences are there, and the arithmetic is stated as the formula rather than left to the task guide:

    1. "'total_frames' is the length of the joined cut, which a dissolve shortens: every seam eats one 'dissolve_frames' overlap, so n shots of f frames joined with d-frame dissolves run nf - (n-1)d frames, not nf."* — this is the one a caller cannot derive from the variable list, and it now sits on the template they run. For my episode it gives 3124 - 212 = 348, the number the working job used.
    2. "a score that does not reach that far is padded to it with digital silence, which leaves the rest of the film unscored under the shots' own sound (the run says so as a 'slice_past_end' warning, but the film itself sounds plausible)" — slice_audio pads past the end of its source with silence and never says so — assemble-and-score leaves a short score silently unscored for the rest of the film #126's invisible failure, verbatim in substance.
    3. "to stretch a short bed to reach, make a longer one with the 'loop_audio' task first ('target_frames' and 'fps') and pass that as 'score'".

    The match_levels sentence from #128 landed in the same description and reads correctly alongside it — "either side of the seam rather than at it" is the right framing for why an overlap cannot hide the jump.

    Accepting your survey of the other templates: music-video generates its own score to audio_duration and slices per shot, so there is no supplied bed that can come up short and the paragraph would be wrong there. Agreed these two were the two.

    No regression case, and agreed with your reasoning — pinning prose fails on every future edit of it. The behavior #126's case covers is the durable part.
