Why

A probe of the published @wave-av/cli@1.0.10 found that the CLI can't authenticate. Four things were wrong:

  • wave login, the command the README and wave doctor tell users to run, doesn't exist.
  • wave auth login --api-key crashes with keytar.setPassword is not a function.
  • The device flow calls /api/oauth/device/*, which returns 404 ROUTE_NOT_FOUND.
  • A stored key could never be used anyway: No project "default" configured.

Setting WAVE_API_KEY was the only auth path that worked. Even with it set, whoami, auth status, status, billing, api and link still said "Not authenticated", because they read only the keychain. Billing, admin, logs, listen, dev and trigger all called https://wave.online/api/*, the marketing host, which returns 404 on every path. wave init produced an empty project and then printed "Ready!".

This PR fixes the client side of all of that. Everything below was checked against the live API, not just against mocks.

What changed (24 commits: the original 5, then review fixes)

  1. Credentials (fix(auth)).
    • keytar interop. keytar is CommonJS. Under ESM, its namespace exposes only getPassword. The loader now takes the complete object from .default. A keytar that loads without its full API is refused with an error; the 0600 ~/.wave/credentials.json fallback is used only when no keychain can load (announced once on stderr) or when WAVE_CREDENTIAL_STORE=file asks for it.
    • Device flow. It now uses the SDK agent-auth ceremony, POST /v1/agent/auth/device and /token. It stores the refresh token and refreshes before expiry. A refused refresh sends the old token (the API's 401 then says to log in again); a network failure past expiry, or a refreshed token that cannot be saved, is reported. --no-browser prints the URL instead of opening it.
    • One resolver. Every command now finds the key, host and org the same way:
      • key: WAVE_API_KEY first, then the stored key
      • host: WAVE_BASE_URL, then the project's saved baseUrl, then https://api.wave.online; it must be https:// (plain http only for loopback) before any credential is sent
      • org: --org, then WAVE_ORG_ID, then the saved org, on SDK and raw routes alike
    • auth login writes the project entry. wave login / wave logout exist as aliases. --api-key-stdin keeps the key out of argv.
    • Files. Credentials and config are written atomically under an inter-process lock. A file that does not parse is reported and never overwritten (1.0.10 saved defaults over it).
    • whoami. It calls GET /v1/me. When the key lacks me:read (403), it takes the org from GET /v1/billing; a 401/5xx is an error, not a partial identity.
    • Exit codes. A missing credential exits 2 everywhere, including auth status. ROUTE_NOT_FOUND / ROUTE_NOT_MAPPED exit 11 as "not served".
  2. Routes (fix(commands)).
    • billing status|usage call GET /v1/billing and /v1/billing/usage.
    • analytics overview|engagement|top-content are new and call the served /v1/analytics/* routes.
    • identity resolve sends GET ?agent= (it was POST, which got ROUTE_NOT_MAPPED).
    • wave api targets the API host, refuses to send the key to any other origin (a file: or gopher: URL included), and exits with the shared codes. A malformed -H (no colon, a bad name, a line break or NUL in the value) is an error that never echoes the value; 1.0.10 dropped a header with no colon silently.
    • link gets the org from served routes and exits non-zero when unauthenticated.
    • logs tail, listen, trigger, dev, admin jobs, mesh status|regions, and billing invoices|limits|portal|upgrade now exit 11 before sending anything.
  3. Keychain bound (fix(auth)). A locked macOS login keychain made auth login --api-key hang with no output (seen live). Every keychain call now times out after 60s (WAVE_KEYCHAIN_TIMEOUT_MS, capped at Node's 2^31-1 ms timer limit), says what to do instead, and ends via SIGKILL with the real status (137), because process.exit() cannot end a process with a native call stuck on a libuv worker.
  4. init (fix(init)). Templates are found from the package root (missing: fail, not an empty project). Generated projects depend on @wave-av/sdk, get tsconfig.json, and every offered template type-checks against SDK 2.1.3. Templates that call SDK methods that don't exist are no longer shipped.
  5. Docs. README auth section, CHANGELOG under [Unreleased], homepage → https://docs.wave.online/docs/cli (200), and npm run smoke:live.

Review rounds

  • Round 3 (f4f431d, b537b8d, c8d739e). Lock takeover race (greptile P1): removing a stale lock now needs an O_EXCL marker named after its identity (dev, inode, mtime ns) plus a re-check, and release removes only a lock whose random stamp is ours. doctor on a broken store (greptile P2) is a failed Auth check in the full report. Trojan Source (semgrep): no literal bidi controls in source.
  • Round 4 (1357235, 3b0a7a3, 8bed18c, 15372f8). A process killed mid-recovery no longer leaves a marker that blocks every later write, and release can't race a takeover (greptile P1 x2). A device grant with no usable interval/expires_in polls every 5s instead of in a tight loop (RFC 8628 §3.2). Every human-mode error message goes through sanitizeForTerminal. The smoke resolves --bin to an absolute path and requires a real stream page once /v1/streams is served.
  • Round 5 (54c1101, 8ee594d). The smoke runs a Windows npm wave.cmd shim's JavaScript entry without a shell (semgrep high). A 402 says what it means (PAYMENT_REQUIRED: nothing was performed or charged) and keeps the gateway's code, message and metered dimension on raw routes.
  • Round 6 (9396f52, a9532dd, f06d62f, 6b4eb44; WAVE BugBot on 8ee594d, greptile on a9532dd). WAVE_KEYCHAIN_TIMEOUT_MS=1e15 failed every keychain call after 1 ms, because Node runs an oversized timer at once; overrides are now capped at 2147483647 ms. wave api -H parsing is strict (above), and it checks for a line break before trimming, because trim() hid a trailing CR. The init command tests load the command tree once in beforeAll: on a loaded machine the cold import alone exceeded the first test's 5s timeout.

Proof

  • On 6b4eb44: tsc --noEmit clean. vitest run: 25 files / 293 tests, green on 3 consecutive full runs at load average ~86 on 20 cores. npm run build OK. (npm run lint is broken on main too: there's no eslint.config.* and eslint isn't a dependency.)
  • Live, from the installed tarball (npm pack of 6b4eb44, global install into a temp prefix from the public registry): smoke:live --bin <prefix>/bin/wave passed 20/20. It first checks two known-served controls (/v1/network/surface, /v1/x402/facilitator/supported, both 200), then a body field for every check: billing status → plan:"free", billing usage → period, analytics overview → summary, webhook-subscriptions → subscriptions[], whoami → org via the billing fallback, identity resolve → the handler's own UNKNOWN_AGENT (req c1524170-c8c3-434a-ba5b-c0ec7185d687), stream list and api GET /v1/streams → exit 11 ROUTE_NOT_FOUND (req 8ea8561c-5c8b-4e42-bb54-d4dc2fdd82b0), a non-loopback http:// base URL → refused, exit 9, and then login --api-key-stdin → whoami/billing with the stored key only → logout → auth status exits 2.
  • wave api -H, live on the same installed binary: api GET /v1/billing -H "Accept: application/json" → exit 0 with plan:"free"; -H X-Organization-Id (no colon) → refused before sending, exit 1; a CR/LF value, or a trailing CR alone → refused, the value not echoed; api GET file:///etc/passwd → "Refusing to send your WAVE credential to a file: URL".
  • Earlier rounds, on their own heads: 16 concurrent wave login processes to 16 projects kept every key and entry and left no lock, marker or temp file; 6 processes recovering a 2-minute-old dead lock all succeeded.
  • Review-bot findings that did not hold up, each checked against the code: wave api SSRF/scheme (the credential goes only to the configured, TLS-validated origin; tests pin file:/gopher: refused and data:/javascript: resolving on the API host); -H header injection (Node's fetch refuses CR/LF values, and the CLI now refuses them first); dev --forward-to (the command exits 11 before any network call); readApiKeyFromStdin without isTTY (a default parameter, always a stream); loadCredentials JSON.parse (already in a try/catch, and a bad file is reported, never overwritten); loadConfig swallowing errors (only ENOENT returns defaults).

1.0.10 could not store a credential at all, and half the CLI ignored the one
credential path that did work (WAVE_API_KEY).

- keychain: keytar is CommonJS; under Node ESM `await import("keytar")` exposes
only getPassword as a named export and the full API on `.default`, so
  `auth login --api-key` / `auth logout` crashed with "keytar.setPassword is
not a function". Take the complete object (default or namespace), fall back
to ~/.wave/credentials.json (0600, enforced on existing files) when no
  complete module exists or WAVE_CREDENTIAL_STORE=file.
- device flow: /api/oauth/device/authorize|token answer 404 ROUTE_NOT_FOUND.
  Use the SDK's agent-auth ceremony (POST /v1/agent/auth/device, /token),
store the refresh token, refresh an expired access token before use,
  add --no-browser.
- one resolver (lib/auth/credentials.ts): WAVE_API_KEY, then the stored key;
  WAVE_BASE_URL, then the project's baseUrl, then https://api.wave.online.
getClient, whoami, auth status, status now share it. A stored key no longer
needs a projects[] entry, and `auth login` writes one.
- `wave login` / `wave logout` aliases (README, doctor and error hints all
said `wave login`, which was an unknown command).
- whoami: GET /v1/me (was /api/v1/me, 404); on 403 (no me:read) report the
org from GET /v1/billing. whoami/status -o json print one JSON document.
- lib/gateway.ts: raw-route fetch with the same resolution, and an error
parser that keeps the code/message of flat envelopes (spend-cap 402,
  mesh 400) instead of a bare HTTP_4xx.
- errors: missing credential exits 2 (AUTH_REQUIRED) with a structured
  envelope under -o json; ROUTE_NOT_FOUND / ROUTE_NOT_MAPPED exit 11 as
"not served yet" instead of an ordinary 404.

…ed ones

billing, api, identity, webhook-subscriptions, analytics and link now go through
lib/gateway.ts: same key and host resolution as getClient(), structured errors
under -o json.

- billing status|usage: GET /v1/billing and /v1/billing/usage on
  api.wave.online (1.0.10 called https://wave.online/api/billing/*, 404 on
every path). invoices, limits, portal, upgrade have no route and say so
  without a request.
- api: defaults to the API host, honors WAVE_API_KEY, and refuses to send the
credential to an absolute URL on another origin.
- identity resolve: GET /v1/identity/resolve?agent= (was POST, ROUTE_NOT_MAPPED).
- analytics overview|engagement|top-content: the served GET /v1/analytics/*.
- link: records the org the key acts for (GET /v1/billing, then
/v1/analytics/overview, then /v1/webhook-subscriptions) instead of the
  unserved /v1/organizations and /v1/projects; exits non-zero unauthenticated.
- logs tail, listen, trigger, dev, admin jobs, mesh status|regions targeted
routes that do not exist (wave.online /api/*, mesh "no such mesh route")
and now exit 11 before sending anything.

With the macOS login keychain locked and nobody able to answer the unlock
prompt, keytar's setPassword never settles, so `wave auth login --api-key`
hung with no output (observed live). Every keychain call now races a 60s
timeout (WAVE_KEYCHAIN_TIMEOUT_MS overrides) and fails with the ways out:
WAVE_API_KEY for the shell, or WAVE_CREDENTIAL_STORE=file. It never falls
back to the plaintext file on its own.

Node's process.exit() joins the libuv threadpool, where the native call is
still blocked, so a normal exit hangs too (reproduced with a thread stuck in
open() on a FIFO). wrapCommand flushes the message and ends the process with
SIGKILL; the structured error reports that real status, 137.

doctor reads the keychain only when WAVE_API_KEY is unset.

1.0.10 looked for templates three directories above the bundled
dist/index.js (<prefix>/lib/node_modules/templates), missed, and silently
wrote an empty src/ with no package.json while printing "Ready!".

- findTemplatesDir() walks up to the package root that holds package.json
and templates/, and throws if it is missing instead of guessing.
- Every template depended on @wave/sdk, which is not on npm; they now depend
on @wave-av/sdk. blank and api-integration call served routes
  (GET /v1/billing, /v1/billing/usage).
- Generated projects get tsconfig.json and @types/node, so `npm run build`
works; wave.config.ts no longer imports a defineConfig the SDK lacks.
- multi-camera and podcast used SDK field names that do not exist; fixed so
every offered template type-checks against @wave-av/sdk 2.1.3. Templates
whose routes are not confirmed served are labelled preview and say why.
- webhook-handler (wave.webhooks.verify) and studio-plugin
(wave.studio.registerPlugin/connect) call SDK methods that do not exist,
so they are withheld and --template explains that.

…ript

- README: `wave auth login` (with `wave login` as the alias), the resolution
order (WAVE_API_KEY, then the stored key; api.wave.online by default),
`--project` instead of the never-existing `--project-name`, the file
credential store, and quick-start commands that hit served routes.
- package.json homepage: https://docs.wave.online/docs/cli (the old /cli
  path is 404).
- scripts/smoke/live-connectivity.mjs (`npm run smoke:live`): drives the
built or installed CLI against the live API with GETs only, a throwaway
HOME and the file credential store; checks two known-served controls
first and a body marker for every fixed path. `--device` also runs
`wave auth login --no-browser` against the live device-flow routes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c8d73

The CLI changes appear sound overall. Two minor edge cases remain. A rare filesystem error during lock cleanup can report a failed save that actually succeeded. A device login response without a polling interval can make the CLI poll too quickly. Both are low-effort fixes and can be handled as follow-ups.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c8d73

Centralized authentication improves consistency and adds destination and transport safeguards. However, an in-flight token refresh can restore stored credentials after logout completes or overwrite a newer login. This affects local credential lifecycle guarantees rather than demonstrating a server-side authorization bypass. A pre-existing terminal-output security finding also remains.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Automatic refresh can commit credentials after their ownership has changed. If logout removes a project's secrets while an earlier refresh request is pending, that request can subsequently recreate the access and refresh entries without detecting the completed logout. The same unchecked commit can overwrite a replacement login. This newly extends credential-writing behavior into ordinary commands and weakens the local cleanup and identity-transition guarantees.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The stale-refresh concern is bounded by the local credential store and affected project. Recreated credentials can be inherited by subsequent CLI invocations under that local account, with the authority granted to those credentials. No cross-tenant authorization bypass, increased server privilege, or infrastructure authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained low-severity finding concerns unsanitized conversion of an unknown thrown value into terminal output. The fallback already exists in the base revision. Its complete attacker-controlled reachability remains unknown; the inspected device-flow changes normalize failures into Error or WaveError branches that now sanitize human-readable messages.
  • inferred — A successful refresh initiated before logout can finish after cleanup and unconditionally persist fresh secrets. This does not require a provider to allow simultaneous refresh-token reuse. Provider rotation semantics do affect the separate risk of competing refreshes producing inconsistent persisted token state.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Raw API destination handling is strengthened relative to the base, which accepted arbitrary HTTP-prefixed absolute paths while attaching the stored bearer key. The new origin check rejects explicit foreign-origin URLs; environment and saved base-host selection remain operator-controlled inputs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Credential-file mutations use an inter-process lock and atomic replacement with mode 0600; configuration updates also lock read-modify-write operations. Malformed credential data is refused rather than silently replaced. These are meaningful containment controls, but their transaction boundaries stop short of the complete refresh/login/logout lifecycle.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coordinate refresh, replacement login, and logout through a project-scoped credential generation or equivalent ownership check. Reject stale refresh commits after ownership changes and persist access token, refresh token, and expiry as one recoverable state transition.
  • proposed — Apply terminal sanitization to the unknown-value fallback as well, so terminal safety does not depend on the type of a thrown value.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High risk] Rewrites authentication, credential storage, and API request routing.

The PR appears safe to merge based on the changes since the previous review and the resolved prior findings.

Summary

This PR repairs CLI authentication and API connectivity, makes unavailable routes fail clearly, and generates usable projects with wave init.

  • Since the previous review, header parsing now rejects CR and LF at the edges of -H values, addressing the prior finding.
  • The wave init test import was moved outside individual test timeouts; no changed behavior was identified.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This is a broad production behavior change spanning authentication, credential storage and refresh, billing, API routing, shared configuration, and generated projects. Sensitive auth/billing paths and the cross-cutting runtime changes require human review even though the author owns the affected files and the reported shell-spawn issue appears fixed.

…nly API host

Addresses the review findings on the credential layer of this PR.

- Credentials file and ~/.wave/config.json: read-modify-write now runs
under an inter-process lockfile (O_EXCL, stale-lock takeover, bounded
wait) and writes atomically (unique temp file + rename, 0600 for
credentials). Two wave processes can no longer drop each other's key
  or refresh token.
- A config or credentials file that does not parse is reported
(ConfigError, exit 9) and left untouched. loadConfig used to save
defaults over any unreadable file, erasing every saved project; with
WAVE_API_KEY resolution reading the config on every command, that
would have hit CI too. Reading a missing config no longer writes one.
- Device-flow refresh: a refused refresh token returns the stored token
(the API's 401 then says to log in again); a transport or 5xx failure
past expiry is reported; a refresh that cannot be saved is reported
instead of returning an unsaved token. The rotated refresh token is
  saved first.
- The API base URL must be https:// (http:// only for loopback) and may
not embed credentials, before any key or refresh token is sent.
- Organization order is --org, then WAVE_ORG_ID, then the saved org, and
raw gateway routes now receive --org (gatewayFetch had dropped it).
- keytar that loads without its full API is refused loudly instead of
silently degrading to the plaintext file; when no keychain can load,
the file fallback is announced once on stderr.
- sanitizeForTerminal strips C0/C1 controls and bidi overrides from API
  text in human error output.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- auth login --api-key-stdin reads the key from a pipe, so it never
appears in the process list or shell history (the live smoke now logs
in this way instead of passing the key in argv). A re-login clears the
organization cached for the project. auth status exits 2
(AUTH_REQUIRED) when unauthenticated, matching every other command.
- whoami: only a 403 from the /v1/billing fallback is tolerated, and it
is reported as organizationUnavailable instead of a silent N/A; a 401,
5xx or network failure is an error. It reports the key's own org, and
strips terminal control sequences from API text before printing.
- wave api: failures still print the response, but exit with the shared
  codes (401 -> 2, 403 -> 7, ROUTE_NOT_FOUND/ROUTE_NOT_MAPPED -> 11)
via process.exitCode instead of a blanket exit 1; --org is sent.
- link discovers the org without the stale saved org header, so a new
key relinks cleanly. doctor checks the project --project/WAVE_PROJECT
select and reports an unusable config as a failed check.
- Device flow: ceremony failures stay structured (WaveError with status
and code, statusCode or status), so ROUTE_NOT_FOUND exits 11; the
browser is opened only for an http(s) page on the API host.
- listen: --forward-to/--events are labelled reserved (no effect yet).
- Tests: link end to end (success, all sources 403, --org mismatch,
stale header), --org precedence on raw routes, wave api exit codes,
--api-key-stdin, re-login org reset, TLS refusal, doctor project
selection and env-only setup, billing periodRange boundaries.

…exist

webhook-handler (wave.webhooks.verify) and studio-plugin
(wave.studio.registerPlugin / connect) were withheld from the picker but
still shipped in the package, so their code could be copied and could
never compile or run. They are removed; `--template <name>` still
explains why they are unavailable.

Adds command-level init tests through the real command tree: a blank
project with its package.json renamed, @types/node, tsconfig, the
template's own example environment file, wave.config.ts without
defineConfig and the README; the preview note for a streams template;
and a withheld template or existing directory refusing without writing
anything.

…out of argv

- README: --api-key-stdin as the recommended way to store a key, the
https-only API host rule, --org > WAVE_ORG_ID > saved org, the file
fallback notice, auth status exit codes, and wave api's exit codes.
- CHANGELOG [Unreleased]: the review fixes in this PR.
- Live smoke: logs in with --api-key-stdin (the key is never a process
argument), bounds the control fetches with a 20s timeout, asserts the
unserved-route code for `stream list` (or a served JSON list), adds
  `wave api GET /v1/streams` (exit 11) and a refused http:// base URL
(exit 9), expects auth status exit 2 after logout, does not inherit
WAVE_ORG_ID/WAVE_PROJECT, and backs off on the gateway's rate limit
(exit 6) instead of failing on it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With the locked read-modify-write, logout with no stored key would still
create an empty ~/.wave/credentials.json. The mutation now reports
whether it changed the map, and an unchanged map is not written (as
before the lock was added).

Semgrep found 4 contains-bidirectional-characters findings:

🟡 Medium severity issue identified in your code:

This code contains bidirectional (bidi) characters. While this is useful for support of right-to-left languages such as Arabic or Hebrew, it can also be used to trick language parsers into executing code in a manner that is different from how it is displayed in code editing and review tools. If this is not what you were expecting, please review this code in an editor that can reveal hidden Unicode characters.

…st took

Review finding on PR #86 (greptile P1, fs-lock.ts:55): two processes that both judged the
same lock stale could interleave so that the second one rm()ed the fresh lock the first had
just taken, and both entered the credentials/config read-modify-write at once.

- The right to remove a stale lock is an O_EXCL marker named after that lock file identity
(device, inode, mtime in ns). One process wins it, re-stats under it, and removes the lock
only if it is still the same file; everyone else goes back to waiting.
- The lock carries a random ownership stamp; release removes it only if it is still ours,
so a holder that stalled past the stale window cannot delete its successor.
- Waiters back off with jitter (capped at 100ms). The fixed 10..200ms schedule woke every
waiter together, so 24 queued writers took ~4.2s and the keychain concurrency test
flaked against its 5s timeout under load; it now runs in ~1s.

Tests: a deterministic replay of the race (first stat reports the fresh lock as aged),
8 recoverers against one aged lock (max 1 inside, no marker left), release-if-owned.

…a crash

Review finding on PR #86 (greptile P2, doctor/index.ts:64): with WAVE_API_KEY unset, a
keytar that loads without its full API (refused loudly since round 2) or a credentials file
that does not parse made getApiKey throw, and wave doctor aborted before printing any check;
the one command meant to diagnose that failure could not.

The store error now becomes a failed Auth check ("Credential store unusable: ...", fix:
WAVE_API_KEY or WAVE_CREDENTIAL_STORE=file) and every other check still runs; exit stays 1.
A keychain timeout still propagates: the native call is blocked, so only wrapCommand can end
the process (flush stderr, then SIGKILL), and doctor prints no half report on stdout.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Semgrep contains-bidirectional-characters on PR #86 (terminal.ts:13 x4, errors.test.ts:75):
the regex that strips bidi overrides from API text, and its test, held the U+202A..U+202E and
U+2066..U+2069 characters literally, which reorders how those lines display in an editor or
review tool. Every range and test input is now a code-point escape; behavior is unchanged
and the test additionally covers the isolate range (LRI/PDI).

Re: WAVE BugBot's 6 findings on 03e315b. Each one was checked against the code before any change was made.

  • P0 wave api SSRF / scheme / -H / Host (api/index.ts:40, :41, :100): not a defect. buildApiUrl compares full origins, so the scheme is part of the check. It refuses any absolute URL whose origin differs from the configured API host, and that host has already passed validateApiBaseUrl (https only, plain http only for loopback, no embedded userinfo). The bearer credential therefore only goes to that TLS-validated origin. The request is made by the person running the command, with their own key. Choosing the path and headers (Host included) is what the command is for, as with gh api, and it can't reach anything that person couldn't already reach with curl.
  • P0 status unvalidated base URL (status/index.ts:30): not a defect. resolveBaseUrl runs both WAVE_BASE_URL and the saved baseUrl through validateApiBaseUrl before returning. The /health probe also sends no credential.
  • P1 whoami test only stubs a 200 (auth/index.test.ts:190): already covered elsewhere. That test is about sanitizing terminal output. The 403→billing fallback, the billing 403 (organizationUnavailable) and the 401-is-an-error paths are asserted in src/commands/connectivity.test.ts ("whoami: key without me:read").
  • P1 loadConfig swallows all read errors (config/manager.ts:41): not a defect on this head. Only ENOENT (or an empty file) returns defaults. Every other read error, invalid JSON and a schema mismatch throw a ConfigError (exit 9), and the CLI never writes over the file.

The round-3 fixes (f4f431d, b537b8d, c8d739e) address the greptile and semgrep findings on 03e315b. Details are in the PR body.

330-330: The next-steps hint omits users who already ran wave login.

The generated projects read only process.env.WAVE_API_KEY. They do not read stored CLI credentials. The hint is therefore accurate. However, a device-flow login stores a token and not an API key, so wave login does not satisfy the templates. The README states this, so no change is required.

Concurrent refresh failure is not established.

The code can send the same refresh token from concurrent processes. However, no repository-owned gateway contract establishes that refresh tokens are single-use, that reuse returns invalid_grant, or that reuse revokes the token family. The lock would be a defensive improvement, but the claimed failure and major impact are unsupported.

…ace a takeover

Review findings on PR #86 (greptile P1 x2 on fs-lock.ts:65 and :109, coderabbit on :110).

- Orphaned marker: a process killed between creating the stale lock's `.break` marker and
removing it left the marker behind, and every later recovery of that lock waited 10s and
failed. Markers are now numbered (`<lock>.<identity>.<n>.break`). One older than the stale
window belongs to a dead process, so the next process takes the next number; once the stale
lock is gone, every marker named after it is removed.
- Release race: a holder that stalled past the stale window could read its own stamp, then
rm() the path just after a recoverer replaced the lock, deleting the recoverer's fresh lock.
Release now reads the identity and the stamp from one open file and removes the lock through
the same marker-guarded re-check as recovery, so the two exclude each other.
- Release is best effort: an error while releasing is reported on stderr and no longer
replaces the result of the locked section, so a saved credential or config change is not
reported as a failure. The lock left behind goes stale and the next writer recovers it.

Tests: a stale lock plus a dead recoverer's marker is recovered with no litter left; a live
marker makes the waiter back off and fail with the actionable message; release defers to a
recoverer holding the marker; a failing release still returns the section's result.

Review finding on PR #86 (coderabbit, device-flow.ts:133). RFC 8628 section 3.2 makes
`interval` optional with a 5s default. With it missing, Math.max(1, undefined) is NaN, so
setTimeout(NaN) fired at once and the CLI polled /v1/agent/auth/token in a tight loop; a
missing `expires_in` made the deadline NaN and the command reported "expired" before its
first poll. The spec (agentAuthDevice) lists both fields as required, so this guards a
malformed grant: interval defaults to 5s, expires_in to 900s.

Test: a grant with undefined, NaN, or non-positive interval/expires_in still polls, waiting
5000ms each time.

Review findings on PR #86 (coderabbit, errors.ts:87-135 and :223). The AuthRequiredError,
ConfigError, KeychainTimeoutError and CapabilityUnavailableError branches, and the fallback
for a thrown non-Error, printed their message raw. ConfigError quotes WAVE_BASE_URL and the
saved baseUrl verbatim, and a thrown non-Error can be any text, so an ESC in either could
drive the terminal. All now go through sanitizeForTerminal, like the WaveError branches.
JSON output is unchanged (JSON.stringify already escapes control characters).

Test: each of those failure types, carrying an OSC sequence, prints without ESC or BEL.

…t once served

Review findings on PR #86 (coderabbit, live-connectivity.mjs:33, :81, :171/:182).

- `--bin` is resolved to an absolute path before the existence check. The CLI runs with its
cwd set to a throwaway HOME, so a relative `--bin ../prefix/bin/wave` passed the check and
then could not be found by the child.
- One launcher for both spawn sites. On Windows an npm-installed `wave` is a `wave.cmd` shim,
which Node refuses to spawn without a shell, so shims go through cmd.exe with the path
quoted (every argument the script passes is a fixed literal). Elsewhere: direct exec.
- If /v1/streams becomes served, the checks now require what the CLI actually consumes:
`stream list -o json` must print an array (empty is fine) and `wave -o json api GET
/v1/streams` a `{ data: [...] }` page. Any other JSON, or none, fails instead of passing.

Run live (Doppler-injected WAVE_API_KEY, GETs only) with a relative --bin against the
packed-and-installed tarball: 20/20.

🟠 High severity issue identified in your code:

Found '$SPAWN' with '{shell: true}'. This is dangerous because this call will spawn the command using a shell process. Doing so propagates current shell settings and variables, which makes it much easier for a malicious actor to execute commands. Use '{shell: false}' instead.

🧹 Fixed in commit 8ee594d 🧹

semgrep flagged spawnSync(..., { shell: true }) in the live smoke (high:
the command runs through cmd.exe with the caller's shell state). It was only
there because Node refuses to spawn a .cmd/.bat file without a shell
(CVE-2024-27980), and `npm i -g` on Windows installs `wave` as `wave.cmd`.

The shim is npm's cmd-shim, which runs
`"%_prog%" "%dp0%\node_modules\@wave-av\cli\dist\index.js" %*`. The smoke now
reads that quoted, %dp0%-relative entry and runs it under this node, the same
way a `--bin dist/index.js` is run. Every launch passes shell: false. A .cmd
that is not an npm shim for a JavaScript entry stops with exit 2 and says to
pass the entry directly.

Checked on macOS with a cmd-shim built from the same template as npm's
bundled cmd-shim/lib/index.js, pointing at the installed tarball: 20/20 live
checks pass through the shim, and a malformed .cmd exits 2.

`wave clip list` and `wave voice list-voices` printed
`HTTP_402 Payment Required` with no next step. The gateway's spend-cap
refusal is a flat body ({"error":"spend_cap_exceeded","code":
"SPEND_CAP_TIER_BLOCKED","message":"Add a payment method...","dimension":...}),
and @wave-av/sdk 2.1.3 reads only the nested {error:{code, message}} shape, so
every SDK-backed command lost the message. The SDK fix is wave-av/sdk#151;
until a release carries it, the CLI now handles a 402 itself:

- A bare HTTP_402 (the SDK path) is reported as PAYMENT_REQUIRED: the request
needs a payment method or goes beyond the plan's included allotment, and the
API refused it, so nothing was performed or charged.
- A raw-route 402 (lib/gateway.ts already keeps flat bodies) keeps the
gateway's code and message, and shows the metered `dimension`.
- Both suggest `wave billing status` and `wave billing usage`, which call
served routes. Under -o json it is one envelope with the same fields.
Gateway text is sanitized for the terminal like every other error.
- The exit code is unchanged (1).

Live, installed tarball: `wave -o json clip list` -> PAYMENT_REQUIRED with
both suggestions (req 8defdbc5-ec14-4457-aa4d-d976c840e61e); `voice
list-voices` likewise (req 761dead8-73e0-4e2c-8041-788e84ebfbe4). Tests
cover both body shapes, JSON mode and escapes; three of the four fail with
the 402 branch disabled.

Node turns a setTimeout delay above 2^31-1 ms into 1 ms (TimeoutOverflowWarning).
An override meant as "wait as long as it takes", such as 1e15, therefore failed
every keychain call at once with "did not answer within 1000000000000s".
Values above the limit, Infinity included, are now capped at 2147483647 ms;
unset, non-numeric, zero and negative values keep the 60s default.

Test: a fake keytar that answers in 50ms stores and reads a key under the
overrides 1e15 and Infinity (red before the cap: KeychainTimeoutError after 1ms).

`wave api -H` split on ":" and silently skipped a header with no colon, so
`-H X-Organization-Id` sent the request without it. A value with CR, LF or NUL
was passed to fetch, which refuses it (no header injection is possible) but
prints the raw value in its TypeError.

parseHeader() now splits on the first colon like curl and throws a clear error
for a missing colon, a name that is not an RFC 9110 token, or a line break or
NUL in the value. The message names the header and never echoes the value.

buildApiUrl already refuses any absolute URL off the configured API origin;
tests now pin that file:// and gopher:// are refused and that data: and
javascript: resolve as a path on the API host. A refused file: URL is named
as "a file: URL" instead of its opaque origin "null".

Re: WAVE BugBot's 10 findings on 8ee594d. Each one was checked against the code (and, where it mattered, against Node's fetch and the live API) before any change.

Fixed

  • P1 keychain.ts:195 unbounded WAVE_KEYCHAIN_TIMEOUT_MS: real. Node turns a delay above 2^31-1 ms into 1 ms, so 1e15 failed every keychain call at once ("did not answer within 1000000000000s"). Fixed in 9396f52: overrides are capped at 2147483647 ms, and Infinity is capped too. The test was red before the cap: a fake keytar that answers in 50ms, under 1e15 and Infinity.
  • P0 x2 api/index.ts:100 header split / CRLF: no injection was possible, but the handling was sloppy. Hardened in a9532dd. Node's fetch refuses a CR/LF value (TypeError: Headers.append: "a\r\nSet-Cookie: x" is an invalid header value), so nothing reached the wire. Two things were still wrong: that TypeError echoed the raw value to the terminal, and a -H with no colon was dropped silently. parseHeader() now splits on the first colon (like curl, so X-Foo: bar: baz keeps bar: baz), and it refuses a missing colon, a name that is not an RFC 9110 token, and CR/LF/NUL in the value. The error names the header and never echoes the value. Live on the installed tarball: a valid -H still gets GET /v1/billing → plan:"free"; -H X-Organization-Id and a CR/LF value both exit 1 before sending.

Not defects

  • P0 x3 api/index.ts:11/:56 scheme / SSRF. buildApiUrl compares full origins, and the scheme is part of the origin. file:///etc/passwd has the opaque origin null, and gopher://… has its own origin, so both are refused. data: and javascript: contain no //, so they resolve as a path on the API host. Tests now pin all four. The configured origin passed validateApiBaseUrl (https only, http only for loopback) before any credential is attached. The refusal now says "a file: URL" instead of "null".
  • P0 x1 api/index.ts:56 -H forwarded to an arbitrary host. The host is never arbitrary (see above). Choosing the path and headers is what the command is for, like gh api.
  • P0 dev/index.ts:32 --forward-to. The action throws CapabilityUnavailableError (exit 11) before any network call. There is no fetch(forwardUrl) on this head.
  • P1 auth/index.ts:101 stream.isTTY null check. stream is a default parameter (= process.stdin), so it is always a stream, and isTTY is an optional property that reads undefined on a pipe, which is the intended branch.
  • P2 keychain.ts:250 JSON.parse unguarded. It is inside try { parsed = JSON.parse(raw) } catch { parsed = null }. A file that doesn't parse is reported and never overwritten.

On a9532dd: tsc is clean; vitest shows 25 files / 291 tests, green on two consecutive full runs; and smoke:live against the npm pack-installed binary passed 20/20 (controls 200/200, req 863160c7-1744-4739-bc33-28243b44b495, 0a08e392-d5da-40ef-b20a-b06c4d1de357).

yakimoto and others added 2 commits October 1, 2026 10:00
Review finding on PR #86 (greptile P2, api/index.ts:53). parseHeader trimmed
the name and value with String.prototype.trim(), which also strips CR and LF,
so `-H "X-Test: value\r"` was sent as `value` instead of being refused, and the
"no line break or NUL" rule held only for inner characters.

Only HTTP optional whitespace (spaces and tabs) is trimmed now, so a CR or LF at
either end of the value is refused like one inside it, and one at either end
of the name fails the token check.

Test: trailing CR, leading LF, trailing CRLF in the value, and a leading LF or
trailing CR in the name are all refused (red before: the value cases parsed).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The command-level init tests imported ../../cli.js (the whole command tree,
SDK included) inside the first test. On a loaded machine (load average ~90 on
20 cores) that cold import alone exceeded vitest's 5s default, so "writes a
buildable project" failed with "Test timed out in 5000ms" while CI passed.

The import now runs once in beforeAll with a 60s budget, and each test only
builds a fresh program. Same assertions; 3 consecutive full runs green at load
average ~86.
