The click in an export is 3 dB quieter than the click you hear in the app #833
With the click track at the same volume, the click in an exported mix, and in the new isolated click file in the stems zip, is 3 dB quieter than the click you hear while playing in the app.
Who it affects
Anyone who exports with Include click track ticked and compares the file with what they heard, or who sets the click level by ear in the app and expects the same level in the export.
What should happen
The exported click sits at the level the app plays it, or the difference is a deliberate choice that is documented where the click volume is set.
Constraints
The click file in the stems zip is built to carry exactly what the click adds to the mix export, so that the mix equals the sum of its stems (a test pins this to within 4 LSB). Whatever changes must keep that.
Changing the level changes every existing click export. The default Classic sound is pinned byte for byte by its tests, so the pin has to be updated on purpose.
Alignment with the beats is not affected.
Found by
The work on #805. The cause is the mix's conversion from mono to stereo, which lowers the click by 3 dB per channel. It predates that work.
Fixed: the export turned the mono click into stereo with ffmpeg's default conversion, which lowers it by 3 dB on each channel, while the app plays it at full level on both. Every export now copies the click to both channels at full level, so the exported click matches the one you hear. This covers mix, region, MP4 and take exports, the count-in and the click file in the stems zip, which still adds up to the mix. The sound and the timing did not change. Exported clicks are 3 dB louder than in 0.20. On big-release (#837).
