The problem
Underground and small bands get nothing in the artist box. It reads Wikipedia and Wikidata only, and those cover artists with press coverage. A band like NIHIL (the song "Barro") has no Wikidata item at all, and MusicBrainz lists several artists of that name with nothing to tell them apart, so the box stays empty for exactly the bands people are most curious about.
The song-lookup settings are also scattered: the AcoustID key and the lyrics transcription setting sit in General among unrelated options.
Constraints for a fix
- No paid service. Discogs has a free API for non-commercial use, with a free personal token, and it covers anyone who has released a record or cassette.
- The token is the user's: optional, entered in Settings, checked when saved, never hardcoded, logged, put in a URL or sent to the browser.
- Same "no weak guesses" rule as the rest: a name shared by several artists is only accepted with evidence, such as a release crediting that exact artist with that song.
- Discogs' terms ask for "Data provided by Discogs" wherever its data appears.
- Without a token nothing changes and nothing is sent to Discogs.
