Why

The Prisma ORM 7 to 8 upgrade guide for PostgreSQL told readers to use "module": "nodenext". Under "type": "module" that makes TypeScript require a .js extension on every relative import, and a reader who followed the guide had to rewrite all their imports. Prisma 8 does not need nodenext. It needs any module setting that accepts JSON import attributes, resolveJsonModule, and the emitted contract.d.ts in include.

Source of truth for every claim: typescript-module-settings.md in prisma/orm.

What changed

  • Section 2.6 starts from the reader's current setup and gives the setting for four cases: already on a compatible module setting (keep it); CommonJS staying CommonJS (nodenext, no "type": "module", attribute-free JSON import); run through tsx, vite, next, esbuild, or another bundler (preserve + bundler, TypeScript 5.4); compiled with tsc and run with plain node as ES modules (nodenext, .js on every relative import, linked to the TypeScript module reference). The tsconfig excerpt no longer shows "module": "nodenext".
  • Prerequisites ask for TypeScript 5.3 or later (5.4 for preserve) and a compatible module setting, and no longer name nodenext as the example.
  • Transactions and runtime reference no longer states preserve and bundler as requirements of the JSON import. It names them as what prisma orm init writes and links to the guide for the other cases.

Searched apps/docs/content/docs for nodenext and for Prisma 8 pages showing a tsconfig.json. The other hits are Prisma 7 pages, the Bun composer quickstart (already preserve), or unrelated settings.

Companion (merged): prisma/prisma8-and-7-example#3 explains in the example README why its imports end in .js. Its tsconfig.json is unchanged so the step-0 to step-3 tags stay valid.

  • Also in this PR. The TypeScript floor is stated as 5.9, which is the package's peer dependency. Section 2.6 went through six reader-review rounds and every case was tested against the real package (matrix in the comments). The Links workflow was red on main because npm's latest moved, so the 19 stale pins across 10 pages are bumped here and lint:versions passes.

Checks

  • pnpm --filter docs build passes
  • lint:links passes, cspell clean on both files
  • lint:code reports only pre-existing untitled blocks on lines this PR does not touch

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that when Node runs .ts files directly, relative imports need .ts extensions and allowImportingTsExtensions: true.
    • Explained that TypeScript error TS2856 indicates db.ts is compiled as CommonJS, where the JSON import should omit with.
    • Specified type-import paths by module configuration: use ./contract.d for preserve or esnext with bundler, and for CommonJS under nodenext; use ./contract.js for ES modules under nodenext, node18, or node20.
    • Retained the existing JSON import requirements and other configuration guidance.

The Prisma ORM 7 to 8 upgrade guide told readers to use "module":
"nodenext", which under "type": "module" makes TypeScript require a .js
extension on every relative import. Prisma 8 only needs a module setting
that accepts JSON import attributes. Section 2.6 now starts from the
reader's current setup and gives the setting for each kind of project,
following docs/reference/typescript-module-settings.md in prisma/orm. The
runtime reference no longer states preserve and bundler as requirements.

  • observed — apps/docs (service) was modified; 2 changed files map to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/docs/content/docs/guides/upgrade-prisma-orm/postgresql.mdx: The prerequisite changes from TypeScript 5.3 or later, with a 5.4 minimum for preserve, to TypeScript 5.9 or newer; it no longer specifies a module setting requirement there.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/docs/content/docs/guides/upgrade-prisma-orm/postgresql.mdx: The guidance now limits retaining an import-attribute-compatible module setting to cases where the file is treated as an ES module, and specifies module-resolution settings for each module option. It adds a CommonJS path using nodenext that omits the JSON import attribute, plus separate bundler and Node ES-module paths. All paths are directed to enable resolveJsonModule and include the generated declarations.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/docs/content/docs/guides/upgrade-prisma-orm/postgresql.mdx: The check now notes that tsc --noEmit does not test the module choice before the contract JSON is imported, says Node ES-module relative imports need .js extensions, and directs readers to revisit the module setting if TypeScript reports TS2823.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/docs/content/docs/orm/reference/transactions-and-runtime.mdx: The example note replaces general TypeScript import-attribute version guidance with a TypeScript 5.9 minimum and explicit compatible settings: preserve/bundler, esnext/bundler, or nodenext/nodenext; it also documents node18 and node20 with moduleResolution unset. It adds the CommonJS case for nodenext without "type": "module", where the JSON import omits the attribute, and updates the upgrade-guide link text.

The prerequisites, section 2.6, and the runtime reference gave TypeScript
5.3 (5.4 for "module": "preserve") as the requirement. Those are the
versions that accept the JSON import attribute, but @prisma/orm-postgres
declares a typescript >=5.9 peer dependency, and release-status.mdx and
the MongoDB upgrade guide already say 5.9 or newer. State 5.9 in the
prerequisites and the runtime reference, and drop the 5.3 and 5.4
qualifiers, which a reader on 5.9 already satisfies.

Reviewed 0af7adafb against the diff, the surrounding pages, and the cited prisma/orm typescript-module-settings.md. The four project cases, the accepted module values, the CommonJS attribute-free import, and what prisma orm init writes all match the source of truth, and the example repo really is NodeNext + "type": "module" + tsc/node. lint:links, cspell, and lint:code on the touched lines are clean locally; the Vercel docs build for this head succeeded.

One finding, fixed in 49df03b5f4809e72d865fbaae3290ed80e36e504:

  • The TypeScript minimum was understated. The rewritten prerequisite said "TypeScript 5.3 or later (5.4 or later for preserve)", and section 2.6 and the runtime reference repeated 5.3/5.4. Those are the versions that accept the JSON import attribute, but @prisma/orm-postgres@8.0.0-rc.12 declares a typescript >=5.9 peer dependency, and release-status.mdx and the MongoDB upgrade guide on main already say "TypeScript 5.9 or newer". The base branch had the same 5.3, but this PR rewrote and repeated the line, so it should carry the real floor. I changed the prerequisite and the runtime reference to "TypeScript 5.9 or newer" and dropped the 5.3/5.4 qualifiers, which a reader on 5.9 already satisfies. Nothing else in the four cases changed.

Not changed, for the record:

  • The red "Validate documentation links" check fails at its lint:versions step on 19 stale package pins in 10 files (npm latest moved to rc.17 / rc.12 / 0.6.1). None of the flagged lines are lines this PR touches, and the same job is red on main for the last three commits. docs(docs): update the Prisma ORM 8 pages for 8.0.0-rc.12 #8317 already bumps those pins and its Links run is green, so I did not fold that into this PR.
  • docs(docs): update the Prisma ORM 8 pages for 8.0.0-rc.12 #8317 also rewrites the same two lines this PR rewrites (the prerequisite and the section 2.6 opener), so whichever merges second will need a small conflict resolution; both now say 5.9, so the facts agree.

I will re-review the new head from scratch shortly.

— reviewer

Six reader-review rounds on section 2.6 and the runtime reference
paragraph. The cases are now keyed on how the app runs rather than on
the current tsconfig value, so a bundled app without "type": "module"
no longer lands in the CommonJS case. Each case names its
moduleResolution, the CommonJS case shows the attribute-free import,
and the check line says what it does and does not test.

…ds ./contract.js

The runtime reference now lists nodenext, node18, and node20 as accepted
module settings but still told every reader to write ./contract.d with no
extension. In a file TypeScript treats as an ES module under those settings
that specifier fails with TS2307; ./contract.js resolves there and under
preserve or esnext with bundler. Name both forms and when each applies.

Re-reviewed the new head 1f776066530b8b3f1bcb0cc21667c253cfb5b9cf (the rework pushed at 10:46Z) from scratch. I tested every tsconfig.json claim in the reworked section 2.6 and the runtime reference with TypeScript 5.9.3 and the real @prisma/orm-postgres@8.0.0-rc.12: TS2823 for commonjs, es2022, and node16; moduleResolution: node10 cannot resolve @prisma/orm-postgres/runtime; node18 and node20 reject an explicit bundler (TS5109); nodenext without "type": "module" accepts the attribute-free JSON import and rejects the attribute (TS2856); extensionless relative imports under nodenext ES modules fail with TS2834/TS2835 naming each one. All hold. The first case now excludes CommonJS output, which settles CodeRabbit's first comment. lint:links, cspell, and lint:code on the touched lines are clean; the Vercel docs build for that head succeeded, so the fenced block inside the list item renders.

One finding, fixed in cbeef41f2c56ebd26425176c870fb90d6e0841b7:

  • ./contract.d does not resolve under half the settings the reference now lists. The paragraph under "Create a client from a connection string" still said "Write ./contract.d exactly like that, with no extension", but the same paragraph now accepts nodenext with nodenext, node18, and node20. In a file TypeScript treats as an ES module under any of those, import type { Contract } from './contract.d' fails with TS2307; it resolves only under preserve or esnext with bundler, and under nodenext when the file is CommonJS. ./contract.js resolves under every listed setting, and the guide's src/db.ts in step 3.1 already uses that form. The sentence now says which form applies where. This is CodeRabbit's second comment, verified.

Not changed, for the record:

  • The red "Validate documentation links" check still fails at its "Validate pinned Prisma versions" step on package pins this PR does not touch; it is red on main too, and docs(docs): update the Prisma ORM 8 pages for 8.0.0-rc.12 #8317 fixes it.
  • The other docs pages that show import type { Contract } from './contract.d' assume the preserve + bundler setup that prisma orm init writes, and are outside this PR.

I will re-review the new head from scratch shortly.

… rule

The nodenext ES-module case told readers that every relative import must
end in .js. Step 3.1 imports ../generated/prisma8/contract.json, which
keeps its .json extension and its import attribute. Say the rule covers
imports of .ts and .d.ts files and name the JSON import as the exception.

Re-reviewed head cbeef41f2c56ebd26425176c870fb90d6e0841b7 from scratch, my own previous fix included. The reference paragraph now matches what I measured with tsc 5.9.3 for every listed module setting, the guide's four cases still hold, and lint:links, cspell, and lint:code on the touched lines are clean; the Vercel docs build for that head succeeded.

One finding, fixed in 66e840e6072dcefb434f5b9f8e11afb2f8dbb7ec:

  • The .js rule in the last case swallowed the JSON import. The nodenext ES-module bullet said "every import that starts with ./ or ../ must end in .js". Two steps later, src/db.ts in step 3.1 writes import contractJson from "../generated/prisma8/contract.json" with { type: "json" }, which starts with ../ and must keep .json; a reader who follows the sentence literally renames it and the import breaks. The bullet now says the rule covers imports that point at a .ts or .d.ts file, gives .js as the compiled output's extension, and names the contract.json import as keeping its .json extension and its with part. The "Check" line under the tsconfig excerpt got the same qualifier. This is CodeRabbit's third comment, verified against step 3.1.

Not changed, for the record:

  • The "Validate documentation links" check was still in progress on cbeef41f2 when I looked; its "Validate pinned Prisma versions" step is red on main for pins this PR does not touch, and docs(docs): update the Prisma ORM 8 pages for 8.0.0-rc.12 #8317 fixes it.
  • lint:code reports only the pre-existing untitled blocks at lines 145 and 149, which this PR does not touch.

This is my third fix push on this pull request, which is the bound I work under. I will re-review the new head from scratch shortly; if that read finds anything more, I will ask a human how to proceed rather than push again.

Review clean at 66e840e

Cold re-read of the head, my own three fixes included: PR body, full diff, section 2.6 with its Check line, step 3.1's db.ts, and the surrounding reference page. No review threads are open.

What the PR does. Two docs pages, 15 additions and 6 deletions. The Prisma ORM 7 to 8 PostgreSQL upgrade guide stops telling every reader to use "module": "nodenext". Section 2.6 now explains why the with { type: "json" } import needs one of five module values and an ES-module file, then gives four cases keyed on how the app runs (already compatible, CommonJS via tsc + node, tsx/bundler, ESM via tsc + node), with the CommonJS case showing the attribute-free JSON import and the ESM case scoped so the .js rule covers relative imports of .ts/.d.ts files and leaves contract.json alone. The prerequisite line asks for TypeScript 5.9 or newer and points at 2.6. The transactions-and-runtime reference no longer states preserve + bundler as requirements of the JSON import; it lists which module/moduleResolution pairs work, when ./contract.d resolves and when ESM under nodenext/node18/node20 needs ./contract.js, and links to the guide.

What I verified on this head.

  • Every tsconfig.json claim, re-run with TypeScript 5.9.3 and the real @prisma/orm-postgres@8.0.0-rc.12: commonjs, node16, and es2022 reject the with part (TS2823); unset module fails; esnext+bundler, preserve+bundler, nodenext ESM, node18, and node20 accept it; node18/node20 reject an explicit bundler (TS5109); nodenext CJS rejects with (TS2856) and accepts the plain import with ./contract.d; nodenext ESM rejects ./contract.d (TS2307) and accepts ./contract.js; node/node10 cannot resolve @prisma/orm-postgres/runtime (TS2307).
  • The example repo is NodeNext + "type": "module" + tsc/node, with the same include as the guide's excerpt.
  • lint:links 0 errors, cspell 0 issues on both files, lint:code reports only the pre-existing untitled blocks on lines this PR does not touch. Vercel docs build, Check Links, spelling, prose, and Playwright are all green on this head.

Risk: low. Docs-only, two files, every technical claim tested rather than read. Two things to know before merging, neither a blocker:

— reviewer

Tested every tsconfig case against @prisma/orm-postgres 8.0.0-rc.12 with
TypeScript 5.9.3 and 7.0.2 on Node 26. Node's type stripping runs the
scaffolded db.ts when relative imports carry .ts extensions and
allowImportingTsExtensions is on, under both the bundler and the
nodenext pair. A CommonJS file that keeps the with part fails with
TS2856, not TS2823, so the check line names both.

Verified every case in section 2.6 against @prisma/orm-postgres@8.0.0-rc.12 with TypeScript 5.9.3 and 7.0.2 on Node 26.8, using the contract.json, contract.d.ts, and db.ts that prisma orm init writes.

Type check (tsc --noEmit), both compilers agree:

module moduleResolution package.json type with part type import Result
esnext bundler module yes ./contract.d pass
preserve bundler module or none yes ./contract.d or ./contract.js pass
nodenext nodenext or unset module yes ./contract.js pass
nodenext nodenext module yes ./contract.d TS2307
nodenext nodenext none or commonjs no ./contract.d or ./contract.js pass
nodenext nodenext none yes TS2856
node18 unset none no TS1479
node20 unset none no pass
node18, node20 unset module yes ./contract.js pass
node16 unset module yes TS2823
commonjs node none either TS2307 on the package
es2022 bundler module yes TS2823
unset unset module yes TS5070
esnext node or node10 module yes TS2307 on the package

Runtime, each constructs the client:

  • tsx with preserve/bundler and extensionless imports, with and without "type": "module".
  • tsc then node dist for the CommonJS nodenext case, and ts-node on the same source.
  • tsc then node dist for the ES-module nodenext case with .js imports.
  • node src/main.ts (type stripping) with .ts extensions and the with part; type-checks under preserve/bundler or nodenext with allowImportingTsExtensions.

Changes from this: the guide's bundler case mentions the type-stripping setup, the check line names TS2856 for a CommonJS file that keeps the with part, and the reference page's ./contract.d note (already fixed in cbeef41) matches the TS2307 row.

Clarify the CommonJS import exception.

The CommonJS case says relative imports must be extensionless, but “copy the other import lines as shown” points to the step 3.1 example, where the Contract type import uses .js. State that CommonJS readers must remove .js from relative imports in step 3.1. The JSON with exception is already clear.

The Links workflow has been red on main for the last three commits
because npm's latest moved to prisma@8.0.0-rc.17,
@prisma/orm-postgres@8.0.0-rc.12, and @prisma/cli-engine@0.6.1. Update
the 19 pinned references across 10 pages; lint:versions reports every
pin current.

Conflicts with #8319 in the upgrade guides and from-scratch. Section 2.6 and the TypeScript prerequisite take #8319's module-setting guidance. The version lines keep this branch's reviewed wording, which already names the versions main moved to. from-scratch takes main's "this page was tested with" wording.
