…nsensitively Chip paths like ./docs/plan.md kept the leading ./, so suffix matching missed the real file. Slashed lookups were also case-sensitive, and the folded fallback compared only the basename, so Docs/Plan.md never resolved to project/docs/plan.md. Normalize the lookup path (and the index query) before matching, then try an exact suffix and a unique case-folded suffix before falling back to basename. Model: grok-4.6 · Harness: grok
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained web bug fix that routes relative file-chip paths through the existing workspace index while retaining safe literal and ambiguous-match fallbacks. Its runtime effects are limited to existing file-chip opening actions, with focused matching and race-condition tests and no schema, deployment, security, billing, or static-analysis changes. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |
The newest-click-wins counter was process-global, so a chip click in thread B could drop an in-flight lookup for thread A even though openFile is per-thread. Claim lookups by thread key so only same-thread clicks supersede each other. Model: grok-4.6 · Harness: grok

UI consistency review: one finding on the new slashed-path suffix matching. Environment scoping in ChatMarkdown looks correct — the lookup and the panel open both read the explicitly resolved environmentId (thread ref first, then the explicit prop) with no active-environment fallback.

Keep the slashed case-fold match and per-thread claim isolation. The ./ strip, Windows slash, exact-case preference, and ambiguous-suffix cases only restated the same branches. Model: grok-4.6 · Harness: grok

One finding: the new ambiguity rule also swallows exact-basename matches, which regresses the bare-filename open path this module exists for. Details inline.

One finding: the new lookup branches introduced by this PR (per-thread claim scoping, .//backslash normalization, case-folded slashed-suffix matching) ended up with no test coverage after the last two commits removed the cases that exercised them. Environment routing in ChatMarkdown still resolves from threadRef.environmentId ?? explicitEnvironmentId with no active-environment fallback, and the claim scope now matches the right panel's byThreadKey keying, so those parts look correct.
Note: the ambiguous-suffix resolution at workspaceBasenameLookup.ts:58 flagged on the previous run is unchanged at this head, so it is not re-reported here.

Slashed suffix twins still resolve to nothing so the literal path opens. Bare names like foo.ts keep the first index hit, which is the old lookup contract. Model: grok-4.6 · Harness: grok

Reviewed the chip path-resolution change for consistency across the chip's actions. Two findings, both in apps/web/src.

One finding: the two basename fallbacks at the end of pickWorkspaceBasenameMatch are now unreachable after the suffix passes were added, leaving the module's case-folding contract documented on dead code.

Open in editor now uses the same index lookup as the panel and reveal, so a slashed chip path opens the real file instead of a cwd-joined miss. Drop the unreachable basename fallbacks after suffix matching. Model: grok-4.6 · Harness: grok

One finding: the chip's "Open in integrated browser" action (and, for PDFs, the chip's primary click) still targets the literal cwd-joined path while panel/editor/reveal now resolve through the workspace index.

readFile reports existing binary files with a distinct failure reason. Count binary_file (and path_not_file) as existing so a slashed chip path like docs/report.pdf keeps its literal file instead of resolving to an unrelated indexed suffix match.

readFile caches for 30s; a stale cached failure/success would let the index hijack (or spare) the wrong file. Force a fresh read for this verification flow.

Closes #8251
Problem: when an agent references a file relative to its own cwd (e.g.
docs/GROUPS_PLAN.mdwhile working inside a subdirectory of the project), the chat file chip resolves that path against the workspace root instead. Clicking the chip then fails withFailed to read workspace file 'docs/GROUPS_PLAN.md' in '<root>'. The workspace-index lookup that rescues bare filenames is skipped for any path containing a slash (needsWorkspaceBasenameLookup), so slashed paths never resolve to where the file actually lives — even thoughrevealMarkdownFileInFileManageralready runs the same lookup for slashed paths.Fix:
openFileInPanel(apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx) now always consults the workspace search index before opening, falling back to the literal path when the index has no match, so already-working behavior is unchanged.pickWorkspaceBasenameMatch(apps/web/src/workspaceBasenameLookup.ts) now matches entries whose full path ends with the referenced relative path at a segment boundary (suffix match) before falling back to basename matching; index order (frecency) breaks ties.needsWorkspaceBasenameLookupis removed since it has no remaining callers. Before / after (project root is the parent directory, agent worked inside the
BudgetLens/subdirectory; clicking theGROUPS_PLAN.mdchip in the reply):Before: clicking the chip fails to read the file

After: the chip opens BudgetLens/docs/GROUPS_PLAN.md

Scope:
apps/webonly. Desktop wraps web and inherits the fix. Mobile has a parallel gap (ThreadFeed.tsxresolves markdown file links against the workspace root only, and silently no-ops when the resolved path is null) — intentionally left out of this PR to keep one concern per change; happy to follow up separately.Verification: targeted tests (
workspaceBasenameLookup.test.ts,markdown-links.test.ts,ChatMarkdown.test.tsx), typecheck and lint for the changed scope, plus one integrated pass in the web client against a sandboxed dev server (screenshots above).Model: GPT-6-Luna · Harness: codex via t3code nightly
Note
Medium Risk
Changes how chat file chips resolve paths for panel, editor, and preview opens; wrong-file risk is mitigated by refusing ambiguous slashed matches, but behavior shifts for all chip opens when cwd and environment are available.
Overview
Chat file chips that reference paths relative to the agent’s cwd (e.g.
docs/plan.mdwhile working in a subfolder) no longer open against the workspace root and fail. Open in panel, open in editor, and open in browser now run the same workspace index lookup as reveal, using the resolved path when there is a unique match and falling back to the literal path otherwise.workspaceBasenameLookupdropsneedsWorkspaceBasenameLookupin favor ofnormalizeWorkspaceLookupPath, andpickWorkspaceBasenameMatchresolves via exact path, then segment-boundary suffix matching (with case folding), returningnullwhen a slashed path is ambiguous.claimWorkspaceBasenameLookupis scoped per thread (scopedThreadKey) so in-flight lookups in one thread are not cancelled by clicks in another.Tests in
