Problem

File chips like docs/GROUPS_PLAN.md fail when the agent works from a workspace subdirectory. See #8251 for the repro.

Change

Search the workspace index by relative path, prefer an existing literal file, and suppress stale editor/browser lookups.

Scope and approval

The issue has a concrete repro and expected path; this is limited to web file-chip lookup. Desktop inherits the fix; mobile has a separate resolver.

Verification

132 focused tests passed across workspace lookup, markdown links, and ChatMarkdown. Web typecheck passed; targeted lint exited 0 with five warnings elsewhere in ChatMarkdown.tsx.

In the Browser panel, orchestration-v2/ThreadTransportPerformance.test.ts opened as src/orchestration-v2/ThreadTransportPerformance.test.ts. The stale-click race itself wasn't forced.

Before: the chip fails
Before: file chip fails

After: opens BudgetLens/docs/GROUPS_PLAN.md
After: file chip opens the nested file

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 848a31d

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused web bug fix that improves resolution of existing file-chip actions for nested workspace paths, with contained lookup logic, stale-request handling, and targeted tests. It uses existing authorized workspace APIs without changing schemas, defaults, deployment behavior, or static-analysis configuration.

Workspace file links use normalized paths to find indexed workspace files. Literal-path checks can preserve an existing file over a different index match. Panel, editor, and browser actions use resolved paths when available, and lookup claims are scoped by thread.

Changes

Workspace file links

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize and match lookup paths
apps/web/src/workspaceBasenameLookup.ts, apps/web/src/workspaceBasenameLookup.test.ts
Lookup paths are normalized. Matching prefers exact paths and segment-boundary suffixes. Tests cover ambiguous matches, invalid paths, literal-file checks, and claims scoped by thread.
Resolve indexed matches against workspace files
apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx
Workspace lookup uses normalized paths without the former read-scope and basename-only checks. A literal-path read can suppress a differing index match when the literal file exists.
Use resolved paths for file-opening actions
apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx
Editor and browser actions use resolved paths when available. Editor actions preserve line and column positions. Panel lookup cancellation is scoped by thread.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 848a3

The web file-chip fix is mergeable after normal checks; the inspected paths show no remaining actionable risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8e356

Permissions remain enforced, but a failed check of the original path can silently select a different workspace file. This creates a limited file-identity risk during user-triggered opens; no privilege escalation was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: A divergent indexed file can replace the clicked literal path when the literal read fails for reasons other than absence. The merge base preserved slashed literal targets; the head treats operation failures and interruption as permission to use the alternate match. If that match contains attacker-controlled content, the user can open a different asset under the original link identity. This is a conditional asset-identity risk, not an established permission bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is target selection for user-triggered file actions in a connected environment. A malicious alternate target would require attacker influence over an indexed workspace file or its contents, plus a matching link and the relevant user's existing action privileges. Cross-environment or tenant access was not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The conditional attack path is a slashed link, a divergent indexed suffix match, and an indeterminate literal-read failure, followed by opening the alternate file. Exact matches, ambiguous-match rejection, and successful literal reads prevent this particular substitution. Browser actions can render HTML or PDF targets, but a browser-origin escape, credential exposure, or privilege gain was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — File-opening controls remain separate from path matching: editor and reveal actions require host-operation eligibility, while browser actions require preview-operation eligibility. Browser file opens obtain an asset URL and then invoke preview opening under the same scoped thread. These controls predate the new resolution flow.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The literal check requests fresh query execution, and server reads release their file handles. Nevertheless, read and close failures are returned as operation_failed, which the caller does not distinguish from a missing literal target when deciding whether to substitute an indexed asset.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent literal-path verification as exists, absent, or indeterminate. Permit divergent indexed substitution only for confirmed absence; preserve the original target or report failure for authorization, containment, interruption, and other indeterminate outcomes.
