Merged and closed PRs had no branch cleanup action in T3 Code.

Adds Delete branch to the three-dot menu on merged and closed GitHub PRs on web/desktop and mobile. The confirmation names the source branch and repository. The menu item disappears after deletion.

Deletes only the remote source branch. Source-repository permissions, one fixed GitHub account per operation, default/base branch checks, and a commit check protect against deleting the wrong branch. Other hosts do not show the action.

Known limit: PR state and branch deletion use separate GitHub requests. The commit check does not detect a PR reopened with the same commit during cleanup.

Scope and approval: one manual GitHub PR cleanup action across web/desktop and mobile. No prior maintainer approval is linked; human review is pending. No exemption is claimed.

The menu update passed 262 focused web/mobile tests (including Android and iOS dependency checks), scoped type checks, and a real web client check with fake PR data. Backend guards also passed the earlier focused tests. Cancel sends no request; confirmation sends one request and hides the menu item. No real branches were deleted during testing.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR introduces a new cross-platform GitHub workflow that can irreversibly delete remote source branches, requiring coordinated permission, credential, provider, API, and UI changes. Although it includes confirmation and extensive guard tests, the destructive mutation and cross-cutting capability warrant focused human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull-request action contract now includes source-branch deletion. The GitHub provider checks permissions and branch state before deletion. The server authorizes the action, and mobile and web interfaces provide deletion controls with confirmation and status feedback.

Changes: Pull-request branch deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Action contract and source-repository permissions
packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.ts, packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.test.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/server/gitHubPullRequestJson.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubPullRequestProvider.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/server/*test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestActions.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestActions.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestDetail.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestDetail.logic.test.ts
The action contract adds delete-branch and the optional deleteBranch capability. GitHub reads source-repository permissions and exposes branch-deletion eligibility through pull-request details and viewer actions. Mobile and web eligibility checks require a non-open pull request and the relevant capability and permission.
Guarded provider deletion
packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubPullRequestApi.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/server/GitHubPullRequestApi.test.ts, packages/source-control-github/src/client/definition.ts, packages/source-control-azure-devops/src/server/AzureDevOpsPullRequestCli.ts, packages/source-control-gitlab/src/server/GitLabPullRequestCli.ts
The GitHub API checks pull-request state, source branch details, and the current branch OID before deleting the ref. It refuses unsafe cases and does nothing when the branch is already absent. Azure DevOps and GitLab classify the action as unsupported.
Server action authorization
apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestService.ts, apps/server/src/pullRequest/PullRequestService.test.ts
The service checks host support, stack status, and viewer permission before dispatch. For providers that support verified credentials, the deletion operation runs with the verified credential.
Mobile and web action controls
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/*, apps/mobile/src/components/AndroidScreenHeader.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/headerMenu.android.ts, apps/mobile/src/components/headerMenu.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/*
Mobile and web controls show branch deletion when eligibility checks pass, request destructive confirmation, and display pending or result states. Android header actions support overflow-only and destructive attributes, with action splitting covered by tests.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to f6966

The change adds guarded source-branch deletion, and the provider request matches GitHub’s documented deletion behavior. No merge-blocking risk is identified.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f6966

Branch deletion adds meaningful destructive authority, but the implementation checks source-repository permissions, keeps one account fixed throughout the operation, and conditionally deletes only the expected source ref. No authorization bypass was established. Interrupted-operation recovery remains less certain than the normal execution path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Each invocation targets one remote source branch, potentially in a fork rather than the PR’s target repository. Eligibility requires write authority on that source repository; the mutation contains one exact ref update.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Authorization and deletion run under one verified GitHub credential. The new action therefore does not intentionally authorize with one account and mutate with another account selected later.
  • observed — GitHub handling refuses open PRs, stack requests, unavailable source details, base/default branches, and a current source OID different from the PR head. The mutation also supplies beforeOid, protecting against a different commit appearing after the read.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — If GitHub accepts deletion but its response is lost, the inspected client handlers can display failure without immediately reconciling the remote ref. This leaves outcome uncertainty, not an established authorization bypass. A subsequent request rereads state and retains the conditional-deletion checks.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For ambiguous mutation failures, reconcile the remote branch through a read-only refresh and distinguish an unknown outcome from a confirmed refusal before offering another destructive attempt.

Make getViewerAccess check the source branch the same way the detail read does.

decodePullRequestCoreJson sets canDeleteBranch only when the viewer can write to the head repository and headRef !== null (Line 2346). decodeViewerPermissionsJson checks only head-repository permission. The viewer-permissions query also does not request headRef. As a result, the two reads disagree when the branch is already deleted. The new test case "a deleted branch" (actionAllowed: true, expected: false) locks in this mismatch. The impact is small, because the provider returns early without a mutation when the ref is absent. Still, the action check accepts a deletion that the detail view hides. If this split is intended, add a comment that explains it. Otherwise, request headRef { id } in VIEWER_PERMISSIONS_GRAPHQL_QUERY and apply the same headRef condition here.

Checked the CodeRabbit permission-read note against 8276c97. This split is intentional: the detail read hides the button when the source ref is gone, while the action-time read checks source-repository write access so a repeated deletion can return success without a mutation. Requiring an existing ref in the permission read would reject that safe retry before the provider can handle it. Focused tests cover both the hidden button and the absent-ref success path. Keeping this behavior; no code comment was added because the repository agent rules forbid new comments unless requested.

Added the missing scope and approval information to the description. Maintainer approval is pending; no exemption is claimed.

Fixed the account-continuity finding in 1655a0c6dee4da8ff77a55996364157008e63fc8. Branch deletion now uses the existing verified credential wrapper around both the source-permission read and remote mutation, including calls without expectedAccountId. A regression test switches the active account after the permission read and proves every request still uses the original account. Existing explicit account checks and other PR actions keep their behavior.

Verified: 507 focused tests across five files, server types, targeted lint, and a separate clean review. The regression failed before the fix.

Checked the concurrent-reopen note against the current source and GitHub documentation. The PR state is read fresh before deletion. The beforeOid condition protects the branch revision; it does not detect reopening with the same revision. GitHub documents atomic ref updates, but its public ref-deletion APIs do not document a condition on PR state.

Keeping this as a known concurrency limit, now stated in the description. Another state read would only narrow the window, so this PR keeps the current checks without claiming atomic PR-lifecycle protection. Deletion after a concurrent reopen has not been reproduced against GitHub.

The CI dependency-cycle failure is fixed separately in f69662c76439b8381c7ab4515f28001a21bc7c76; 262 focused tests, including both platform dependency graphs, types and lint pass locally.

Brings in upstream through pingdotgg#19257 (339179f).

- Partly superseded: upstream's Tailscale SSH remote open (pingdotgg#19402) replaces Cody's detection. Cody now uses upstream's `tailscale debug prefs` read, which also treats `tailscale down` as off, and drops its `tailscale get` reader, Windows skip, and Tailscale 1.102 requirement. Cody keeps only the tailscale-ssh target with the server's account, so editors sign in as that user.
- Adapted: Cody's install-when-idle updates now skip a version upstream reports as not applied (pingdotgg#19291), instead of reinstalling and restarting after every idle period.
- Server browser: kept Windows work-account sign-in beside upstream's copy recording (pingdotgg#19561).
- Mobile branch list: kept Cody's worktreeBaseRef import beside upstream's linked PR suggestions (pingdotgg#19357).

Sync 1015a: 8 upstream commits, including pingdotgg#15208 (clean up settled
thread worktrees), pingdotgg#19617 (waiting icon and timer), pingdotgg#19257 (delete
branches after merge or close) and the delegated-task question fixes.
The fork's attached-worktree guard runs inside upstream's new startup
lease; its test fixtures place harness worktrees inside the worktrees
dir and mock the new thread read. The sidebar Waiting pill shows
upstream's icon, then the fork's agent/command/PR icon and clock.
