A desktop install puts no t3 on PATH, so the browser's host-setup prompt (sudo env "PATH=$PATH" t3 browser setup) couldn't be followed. On Linux the AppImage can't be run as the CLI either: running it with arguments starts the GUI.

  • Desktop: the packaged app now keeps a launcher for its bundled CLI at <T3 home>/bin/t3 (t3.cmd on Windows), refreshed each time it starts its server.
    • macOS, .deb and Windows: the launcher runs the app directly with ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE.
    • AppImage: it mounts the AppImage (--appimage-mount), runs the bundled CLI, and unmounts on exit.
    • The launcher is never on PATH, so it can't shadow another t3. The app passes its path to the server as T3CODE_CLI_PATH.
  • Server: commands a person runs keep t3 when it's on PATH, and npx t3 / pnpm dlx / bunx when the server runs that way. Otherwise they name this install's launcher by absolute path: the desktop launcher, or a standalone binary's own path. An absolute launcher needs no env "PATH=$PATH".

Putting t3 on PATH, like VS Code's "Install 'code' command", will be an explicit Settings action in a follow-up PR.

Before (desktop only, t3 not on PATH) After
sudo env "PATH=$PATH" t3 browser setup → t3: command not found sudo /home/me/.t3/bin/t3 browser setup

Verified:

  • A rendered launcher ran t3 --version and t3 browser setup against a real nightly AppImage on Ubuntu and left nothing mounted.
  • The same against the installed macOS Nightly app. Neither started the GUI.
  • Tests cover the launcher scripts against a fake AppImage and a moved app, Windows quoting for (x86) and % paths, and each command rendering case.
  • Not run on Windows.

The browser setup command assumed `t3` was on PATH, so desktop and standalone
installs got a command that could not run. Fall back to the desktop app's
launcher (T3CODE_CLI_PATH) or the standalone binary's own path, and keep
`t3` or `npx t3` when that is how the server runs.

Linux desktop installs had no `t3` on PATH, and an AppImage cannot be run as
the CLI directly. The app now writes ~/.local/bin/t3, which mounts the
AppImage (or runs a .deb install directly) and starts its bundled server as
the CLI. It never replaces a `t3` it did not write, and hands the path to its
backend so setup commands name it.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The PR introduces a substantial cross-platform desktop CLI launcher with filesystem, subprocess, AppImage, and sudo behavior, rather than making only a narrow prompt correction. It also adds a static-analysis suppression and retains an unresolved concern about unbounded error text in log annotations.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The desktop app now installs a CLI shim for packaged builds and passes its optional path to backend configuration. Server command resolution can use the shim or executable path when t3 is unavailable on PATH. Tests cover launcher behavior and command selection.

Changes

Desktop CLI access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate and install the desktop launcher
apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopCliShim.ts, apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopCliShim.test.ts
The shim generates Windows, direct, and AppImage launchers. Packaged builds install the launcher unless an existing unmarked file prevents installation. Tests cover launch arguments, environment values, exit status, AppImage cleanup, missing executables, and Windows path handling.
Pass the launcher path to backend configuration
apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendConfiguration.ts
Windows primary configuration installs the shim and sets T3CODE_CLI_PATH in the child environment when a path is available.
Resolve host commands and root commands
apps/server/src/cli/invocation.ts, apps/server/src/cli/invocation.test.ts, docs/user/remote-access.md
Command resolution checks whether t3 is available, then can use the configured launcher path or executable path. Tests cover command selection and root-command behavior. The remote-access instructions describe the PATH and full-path cases.

Browser setup can use a supported t3 on PATH. Installation failures can still produce overly detailed log annotations; fix or explicitly accept that limited risk before merging.

The launcher now lives in <T3 home>/bin on macOS, Linux and Windows (t3.cmd)
instead of ~/.local/bin, so it is never on PATH and never shadows another
`t3`. The server names it by absolute path in setup commands. Putting `t3` on
PATH becomes an explicit Settings action in a follow-up.

Do not put formatted causes in log annotations.

Cause.pretty(cause) puts unbounded lower-level error text into the warning’s annotations. Log a bounded failure category instead. As per coding guidelines, “Attributes and log annotations stay bounded: no ... arbitrary defect text.”

- Windows: the moved-app message no longer echoes the path, which cmd split
on `&`; delayed expansion is off so `!name!` survives; paths are read in
UTF-8 and the console's code page is restored.
- The launcher carries its absolute path and the install's T3 home, so
`sudo` (which clears the environment) still uses the right home and setup
prompts never show a relative path.
- AppImage: falls back to extracting the image where FUSE cannot mount it,
and ignores APPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN, which would start the app instead.
- A file at the launcher path the app did not write is left alone.

… paths

A Ctrl-C that ends the batch skips restoring the code page, which left the
user's console in UTF-8 after every interrupted `t3` run. All-ASCII installs,
the common case, now skip the switch entirely.

Brings in 77 upstream commits through pingdotgg#17092.

- WelcomeWizard.tsx: kept Cody's CodyMark/APP_BASE_NAME imports beside upstream's saved cloud connection import.
- MessagesTimeline.logic.ts: kept the fork's turn-answer imports beside upstream's assistant citation imports; the wrap-up answer and upstream's live subagent cards both feed the fold.
- mobile threadActivity.test.ts: kept both the wrap-up answer test and upstream's live subagent test.
- Adapted: Cody's t3 launcher (upstream pingdotgg#16676/pingdotgg#16683) carries a Cody marker, so Settings > Install t3 command in Cody never repoints or removes official T3 Code's t3 link. Covered by DesktopCliCommand.test.ts, now in personal-fixes.
- DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts: clear an inherited T3CODE_WINDOWS_SSO_HELPER so the WSL sign-in test is hermetic on a Cody backend.
- Superseded: none this round. Unaffected after review: sparse checkouts, worktree base refs, Azure DevOps, Windows work-account sign-in (desktop and server browser), auto-install updates, turn answers, OpenCode usage.
