Wiicompiled can be built on Windows, but can be ran on Linux under Wine/Proton*.

This PR addresses some oddities when this happens, including:

  • Detection of Proton/Wine through host_platform.h, specifically IsRunningUnderWine()
  • Setting Vulkan as the default on Linux, since it has way better performance than DirectX12 (I couldn't achieve 180FPS with DX12), either API can still be forced
  • Patches webgpu_dawn.dll, as it fails to load Vulkan under Proton (they are heavily dependant on specific windows APIs)
  • Exclusive fullscreen not being an accessible option (borderless fullscreen only) due being buggy/redundant on Linux
  • The Windows Media Control-based "mute while external media plays" feature is hidden and disabled (this feature could be re-added with mpris in the future)
  • The settings overlay shows "Running under Wine/Proton" when detected (convenience)

Known issues: using ALT+ENTER to exit out of fullscreen could show black borders around the window, until manually exiting fullscreen (depending on the DE)

Video of the project running successfully on Linux (CachyOS x86_64, Linux 7.2.0-1-cachyos, mesa version: 26.2.1-1):

※ I'll submit another PR regarding building on Linux, I wanted to split the two for now.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a controller-mapping setup wizard with saved mappings and guided configuration.
    • Improved compatibility when running on Wine or Proton.
    • Automatically favors Vulkan graphics on Wine/Proton when no backend is selected.
    • Added clear Wine/Proton status information in graphics settings.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented unsupported exclusive fullscreen and external-media music attenuation options from appearing under Wine/Proton.
    • Adjusted display mode handling to use borderless mode where necessary.
    • Improved stability when handling missing pages and null virtual calls.

Adds Wine/Proton detection and uses it to work around features that misbehave there: exclusive fullscreen and Windows Media Control-based music ducking are disabled, and Dawn's Vulkan loader is patched around a Wine-specific LoadLibraryExA failure.
graphics_api="auto" now tries Vulkan first under Wine/Proton instead of D3D12, since Wine's own vkd3d is commonly incomplete. Real Windows still tries D3D12 first, and setting graphics_api="d3d12" explicitly still works under Proton.
Comment/whitespace polish in runtime_config.h and main.cpp.

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The runtime now detects Wine/Proton and adapts display modes, audio controls, graphics backend selection, and Dawn Vulkan loading. It integrates a controller-mapping wizard, guards null indirect calls, and adds a Retro Rewind page override. The repository ignores additional build and tooling artifacts.

Changes

Wine and Proton runtime support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform detection and runtime settings
runtime/include/host_platform.h, runtime/include/runtime_config.h, runtime/src/settings_overlay.cpp
The runtime detects Wine/Proton. Configuration maps exclusive display mode to borderless mode. The settings overlay hides unsupported controls and displays Wine/Proton status information.
Wine Vulkan backend initialization
runtime/src/main.cpp
Windows initialization patches Dawn’s LoadLibraryExA import for Vulkan loading under Wine. Automatic backend selection prefers Vulkan under Wine, while explicit selections remain unchanged.

Controller mapping wizard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Controller wizard integration
runtime/src/settings_overlay.cpp
The settings overlay exposes the controller-mapping wizard, restores persisted state, forwards SDL events, renders the wizard, and blocks game input while it is active.

Runtime compatibility guards

Layer / File(s) Summary
Null indirect call handling
runtime/include/abi_bridge.h
Address-zero indirect calls are logged as null-object virtual calls and return without entering the missing-target termination path.
Retro Rewind page activation override
runtime/src/hle/retro_rewind_page_guard.cpp
A native override resolves Retro Rewind pages, updates page state, activates valid pages, and skips null page entries.

Repository hygiene

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and tooling ignore rules
.gitignore
Ignore rules now cover additional build directories, extracted files, Mario Kart Wii artifacts, and editor or tooling files.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9f668

The PR is mergeable with owner follow-up for a localized settings-overlay issue: an existing exclusive display mode under Wine/Proton may show an invalid selection and inconsistent fullscreen guidance. Normalize the effective mode before rendering.

589-593: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize the active display mode before shortening the combo.

If aurora_get_display_mode() returns AURORA_DISPLAY_MODE_EXCLUSIVE under Wine/Proton, g_displayMode is 2 while displayModeCount is 2. The combo then receives an out-of-range index, and the overlay shows the exclusive-mode explanation while hiding the option. Normalize exclusive mode to borderless before rendering and persist the effective value.
