…-test-from WithPresubmitFrom (used by --with-test-from / /payload-job-with-prs) copied BaseImages and Releases from the source config into the merged one, but silently dropped Images. Tests that depend on a pipeline:<image> the source config builds itself (rather than a base or release image) therefore failed ci-operator's loading_args:validating_config step with: cannot determine source for dependency "pipeline:<image>" - no base image import, project image build, or bundle image build is configured to provide this dependency Fix WithPresubmitFrom to carry over the needed project image builds (transitively through `from`), namespaced by the source repo so they build from a dedicated ref rather than the base job's own checkout, and rewrite the test's dependencies to match. Since that source repo isn't otherwise checked out in a /payload-job-with-prs run, also add it as an extra ref whenever the resolved config needed one of its images. WithPresubmitFrom took a shallow copy of the selected source test before
handing it to includeInjectedTestSourceImages, which rewrites dependency
names in place (including through a map, and through LiteralTestStep
Dependencies slices). MultiStageTestConfiguration{,Literal} are held by
pointer/reference, so the shallow copy aliased that state with source.
source can be a shared, cached config object (see configAgent.GetMatchingConfig,
read-locked for concurrent access from the configresolver), so mutating it in
place risked corrupting state visible to unrelated concurrent requests and,
for the map case, a concurrent-map-write race.
Deep-copy the test via its generated DeepCopy() before mutating it. Added
regression tests asserting source is left untouched, for both the literal and
workflow-based (map) dependency shapes.

Please reorganize the tests and simplify their assertions. The separate config_injected_source_image_test.go and inject_source_ref_test.go files are unnecessary.

Suppose app copies a file from another source-built image:
images:
- to: helper
dockerfile_path: helper.Dockerfile
- to: app
dockerfile_path: app.Dockerfile
inputs:
helper:
paths:
- source_path: /output/tool
destination_dir: .
The injected test requests only app. As it is, it would copy app, but its dependency search follows only from. It misses helper and leaves the input key as helper.
Consequently, the build either cannot find helper, or uses an unrelated helper image from the component configuration.
Please also follow Inputs dependencies. In this example, copying app requires copying helper and changing the input key to helper-org.source. Keep the existing copy paths unchanged. Otherwise the injected image can use the wrong repository’s input image.

A source test might contain only:
tests:
- as: e2e
steps:
workflow: example-e2e
A step inside that workflow contains:
dependencies:
- env: APP_IMAGE
name: pipeline:app
Right now it searches the test, it sees workflow: example-e2e. The workflow has not been expanded yet, so it cannot see pipeline:app. It copies no image. Later, the resolver expands the workflow and introduces the dependency, but image copying has already finished.
Please resolve the selected test’s workflow, chains and references before collecting image dependencies. A dependency declared inside a referenced step is currently invisible to this helper, so the required image is never copied. Also you could add a test case for this.

Please leave From empty when it was empty in the source configuration. Adding Ref: org.source selects the checkout; adding From: src-org.source changes the Dockerfile’s base image. The existing regression test currently expects this incorrect change. Please change that expectation to an empty From.

Suppose the source configuration contains:
images: - to: app dockerfile_path: DockerfileIts Dockerfile says:
FROM registry.example.com/runtime:latest COPY app /usr/bin/appThere is no
fromin the configuration because the Dockerfile already specifies the base image.
Right now it would change the copied configuration to:- to: app-org.source from: src-org.source ref: org.source dockerfile_path: DockerfileThat new
fromoverrides the Dockerfile’s base image. The image now builds on the CI source image instead of the intended runtime image.

Simirarly here: Please handle the parent according to how it is produced. For from: bin, copy the source binary commands needed to create bin-org.source. For an imported alias such as base, preserve the alias that was actually imported. Appending the repository suffix to every parent leaves missing dependencies.

Consider these available configurations:
| Repository | Branch | Variant |
|---|---|---|
| org/component | main | empty |
| org/source | main | 4.21 |
Initially, the job selects the component configuration and explicitly borrows the source test from variant 4.21.
This adds org/source to the checkout refs. At runtime, ci-operator uses those refs to decide which configurations to merge. It now also requests: org/source, branch main, variant empty - that configuration does not exist.

Please deep-copy the build root. Copying the outer struct leaves ProjectImageBuild shared with the source configuration, and subsequent defaulting writes its Ref.
Addresses Prucek's review of openshift#5447: - Follow `inputs` dependencies, not just `from`, when discovering and namespacing project images the injected test needs, and rewrite the `inputs` keys on the copied image accordingly. - Resolve the selected test's workflow, chains and references before collecting its dependencies, so a dependency hidden inside a workflow step is no longer invisible to WithPresubmitFrom. The resolver is threaded in from registry/server's injectTest. - Leave an image's `from` empty when it was empty in the source configuration, instead of defaulting it to the source image. - Handle non-project-image parents by how they're actually produced: carry over binary/test-binary build commands under the same ref for `from: bin`/`from: test-bin`, and leave an imported base image alias unchanged, since it is already carried over verbatim. - Thread the injected test's own variant through ci-operator's getResolverInfo, so the extra ref added for its source repository resolves under its own variant rather than an empty one. - Deep-copy the carried-over build root instead of aliasing it with the source configuration. - Fold the standalone regression test files into the existing config_test.go and prpqr_reconciler_test.go tables. WithPresubmitFromnow resolves the source configuration and carries over project images required by the selected test, including dependencies reached through image inputs and resolved workflow steps. It namespaces copied images by source repository and rewrites their dependencies. It also preserves required build roots and binary build commands. When the merged configuration uses an image from the injected test’s source repository, the PR reconciler adds that repository as an extra ref without duplicating an existing ref. Resolver metadata uses the injected test’s variant for that source ref.
This change affects ci-operator presubmit injection and PR job generation. It prevents injected tests from missing project-built image dependencies during configuration validation.
