Compose warns of deprecated volume external name #9029

Closed

Description

Description

Compose V2 warns that "volume.external.name is deprecated in favor of volume.name" even though this exact syntax is described in the compose specification:

volumes:
  db-data:
    external:
      name: actual-name-of-volume

Steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Compose volumes section:
volumes:
  a_volume:
    external:
      name: other_name
  1. Run docker compose up -d

Describe the results you received:

WARN[0000] volume a_volume: volume.external.name is deprecated in favor of volume.name

Describe the results you expected:

No warning, as this is the exact syntax provided in compose specification.

    @sepe81

I got the same warning with v2.6.0 and found docker/docs#14851 for networks. I guess it's a similar change for volumes.

The missing link should be https://docs.docker.com/compose/compose-file/compose-file-v2/#external
There you find the deprecation note.

Deprecated in version 2.1 file format.
