feat: מפת סימבולים ב-get_repo_file — ניווט בקבצים גדולים במקום ניחוש - #3321
Conversation
webapp/app.py is 20,035 lines. An agent looking for a function in it read a range and guessed. With outline=true the tool returns every function and class with its start and end line, so the follow-up is an exact lines= range instead of a guess. One rule produces the whole map: a namespace in Python is a function or a class, and nothing else. Names are qualified with dots at those boundaries only, so a method is Class.method and a nested tool is _register_repo_tools.get_repo_file, while if/try/with/for are traversed without adding a prefix. That rule is the feature. Descending only into top-level definitions returned 9 symbols for mcp_server/server.py instead of 38, leaving build_mcp as one opaque 513-line block with every MCP tool hidden inside it — the exact failure this is meant to prevent, in the file that defines the tool. An intermediate version that recursed into function and class bodies still missed 62 symbols in webapp/app.py, because the fallback classes there live inside except ImportError. Adding a special case for decorated functions would have reproduced the same bug one layer down. The start line is the first decorator, not the def. 203 of the 408 top-level functions in webapp/app.py are decorated, so a range taken from the outline would otherwise begin after @app.route(...) and miss the line that identifies the route. symbol= filters on the full name, case-insensitively, so symbol="build_mcp" returns the namespace and everything under it. total counts matches after filtering because paging depends on it: symbol="api_db" on webapp/app.py returns 5 symbols instead of 530. Names are not unique. if/else is not a namespace, so two definitions in two branches share a full name and differ only by line — six such cases exist in this repo today. Nothing keys symbols by name at any stage, and the order is by start line with the name as a stable tiebreak so a page boundary does not move between calls. The broad except wraps ast.parse alone. The input is a file someone else wrote and the exception type is version-dependent — a null byte is a SyntaxError on 3.11 and a ValueError elsewhere, an invalid surrogate is a UnicodeEncodeError — so enumerating types is the brittle approach. Traversal runs outside that try with an explicit stack, so a bug of ours fails loudly instead of disguising itself as "no outline", and deep nesting cannot raise RecursionError from our side. The exception class name is returned as error_type, because a broad except without it makes the failure undiagnosable. no_outline is a status, not an error, exactly like binary: the call succeeded, there is just no content of that kind. extract_outline reports failure through its return value rather than by raising, which is stated in its docstring, because a caller that only checks for an exception would show a broken file as a file with no symbols. Completeness is pinned against tokenize rather than ast.walk. A lexer is an independent counter; comparing the traversal to another function in the same library it is built on proves much less. The check runs over five real files in this repo, and it fails against both earlier versions. Verified through a real mirror: all four large files match the independent count, and outline then lines= on api_db_collections returns 61 lines starting at its @app.route decorator. …table Review found that when the output budget stopped a page early, the next page still began after the full per_page, so the skipped symbols were never returned by any page. Measured: the budget is 256,000 bytes, the entire outline of webapp/app.py is 33,691, and a maximum page is 58,000 — so the truncation branch is unreachable today. A latent mine rather than an active leak, and one added field is all it takes to arm it. Detecting the bad state is the wrong fix; the two mechanisms simply cannot share a page. Byte truncation inside a page and arithmetic paging lose symbols by construction. So the record size is bounded instead: a symbol name is capped at 200 characters, which makes a record at most 246 bytes and a maximum page 500 x 246 = 123,000 — under half the budget, by arithmetic rather than by hope, with a test that holds the proof when someone changes one of the three numbers. The longest name in this repo is 81 characters, so the cap never touches real code. With no truncation there is no truncated field. It would have been permanently false while meaning something else than the same word means in list_repo_tree, where it reports the budget cutting records inside a page. total against page and per_page is what says whether more pages exist. That also dissolves the separate finding about counting characters rather than UTF-8 bytes: there is no per-record accounting left to get wrong. get_file now normalizes page and per_page before slicing, the same way list_tree does at the same layer and for the reason written in its comment there: the handler clamps, but this method is a public API and a direct caller must not slice with a negative start or crash on a non-numeric value. Non-positive values clamp to the nearest bound and non-numeric ones fall back to the default, matching that neighbour exactly. Passing both lines and outline is now rejected instead of silently resolving to the outline. Ignoring a parameter the caller took the trouble to send is the same quiet failure this server keeps being audited for. Suffix matching accepts .py and .pyi in any case, since a stub file is valid Python that ast parses and is far more common than an uppercase suffix. symbol= compares with casefold rather than lower, which is the primitive for case-insensitive matching and the only one that matches STRASSE against strasse. The start line now scans back to the line beginning with @. A decorator node's lineno is the line of the expression, not of the @, and they differ when the expression opens on the next line. That syntax appears zero times in this repo, but the fix is four lines with no new dependency, which is cheaper than documenting a range that is known to be wrong. Verified against a real mirror: completeness still matches the independent tokenize count on all files, six pages of webapp/app.py reassemble into exactly the 530 symbols with none lost, and both new rejections behave. Seven more mutations fail, including restoring the truncation branch, removing the page normalization, and removing the name bound. The same page-versus-budget mine exists in list_tree, which this change deliberately does not touch: it is shipped behaviour, equally unreachable today, and widening this PR to it would mix a new feature with a fix to an old tool. ast.AST has no lineno attribute; the actual argument is always one of FunctionDef/AsyncFunctionDef/ClassDef (isinstance-narrowed at the call site), so annotate the parameter with that union instead. Co-authored-by: amir haim <215461772+amirbiron@users.noreply.github.com>
Three of these findings are mine from the previous round, and two of them are the same mistake: bounding the name was the wrong lever. The claim that a maximum page provably fits the output budget was arithmetic in ASCII only. The bound was 200 characters, and a CJK character is three UTF-8 bytes, so a maximum page reached 323,000 bytes against a 256,000 budget — measured. A character count is not a byte guarantee, which is the same class of error this feature keeps being audited for, committed one round ago while claiming "arithmetic, not hope". Truncating the name also destroyed identity: symbol= with the full name returned nothing, and two different long names could collapse onto the same displayed string. An identifier that is cut is not an identifier. So the name is returned whole and the response is measured instead: the assembled page is serialized as UTF-8 JSON and compared against the budget. A page that does not fit is rejected as page_too_large with the actual size, the limit and the per_page that produced it, rather than trimmed. Trimming inside a page and arithmetic paging lose symbols together, and a rejection is lossless, deterministic, and tells the caller exactly what to do. The decorator scan now steps over blank lines and comments while walking back to the @, and only moves if it actually lands on one — a decorator split as @( followed by a comment returned the expression line, so a range taken from the outline began after the symbol started. The duplicate-name regression test had become tautological when it was decoupled from a hard-coded name last round: it derived both the expectation and the check from the same list, so a partial collapse — one duplicate lost, another kept — would pass. It is anchored to the independent tokenize count now, which catches any collapse. The docs example for no_outline showed neither ok nor file although _outline_response always adds both, immediately after a sentence claiming the shape was complete; and the note multiplied 500 by 250 and wrote 123,000. Both corrected, along with the removed name bound and the new rejection. Six more mutations fail, including counting characters instead of bytes, trimming instead of rejecting, restoring the name cap, and a partial duplicate collapse that the tautological test would have passed.
