(Backend)
  • DevOps/CI/CD

  • mcp_server/server.py — שתי שורות אדיטיביות: instrument_mcp_server(mcp) מיד אחרי בניית ה-AdminAwareFastMCP, ו-attach_shutdown_drain(app) אחרי streamable_http_app().
  • requirements/base.txt — posthog==7.45.3 (ה-SDK של MCP נשלח בתוך החבילה posthog, בלי התקנה נפרדת).
  • docs/mcp-server.rst — סעיף חדש mcp-analytics; docs/environment-variables.rst + services/config_inspector_service.py — שני המשתנים החדשים; mcp_server/README.md + AI-MAP.md (נוצר מחדש בסקריפט).
  • tests/test_mcp_analytics_privacy.py (חדש) — 12 טסטים.

הרצה מול שרת FastMCP מאונסטרם אמיתי הראתה שגוף הקובץ יוצא בחמישה מקומות באירוע: $mcp_response.content[0].text, $mcp_parameters.request.params.arguments.code, $mcp_error_message, ושתי רשומות ב-$exception_list[*].value.

  • Unit — tests/test_mcp_analytics_privacy.py: 12/12
$mcp_parameters / $mcp_response / $mcp_error_message אינם קיימים באירוע; $mcp_tool_name, $mcp_duration_ms, $mcp_is_error, $mcp_error_type, $mcp_client_name, $session_id, $mcp_listed_tool_names — קיימים.
  • tests/test_mcp_*.py — 430 עוברים.
  • flake8 נקי על כל הקבצים שנגעתי בהם; tests/test_doc_summary_style.py ו-tests/test_docs_literalinclude_anchors.py עוברים.

🧪 בדיקות נדרשות ב‑PR

  • 🔍 Code Quality & Security
  • Unit Tests (3.11)
  • Unit Tests (3.12)

  • תיעוד עודכן (docs/mcp-server.rst, docs/environment-variables.rst, mcp_server/README.md, AI-MAP.md)
  • נוספו משתני סביבה — עודכן docs/environment-variables.rst וגם services/config_inspector_service.py
Conventional Commits
  • עיינתי במסמכי אתר התיעוד — נתיב: docs/mcp-server.rst, docs/doc-authoring.rst, docs/versioning-stable-anchors.rst, docs/environment-variables.rst | המשפט: "שירות web נפרד (ASGI) ב-Render"

(Rollback)

New Features:

  • Add optional PostHog analytics for MCP handshakes, tool listings, and tool calls, including usage, duration, and failure metadata.

Bug Fixes:

  • Prevent user file content, tool arguments and results, and exception messages from being sent to PostHog through a fail-closed privacy gate.

Enhancements:

  • Ensure analytics queues drain during ASGI shutdown while preserving existing MCP tools and schemas.
  • Make missing analytics configuration environment-aware, with production fallback and development-time failure visibility.

Build:

  • Add the pinned PostHog SDK dependency and register the new analytics environment variables.

Documentation:

  • Document MCP analytics, privacy protections, configuration, and operational behavior.

Tests:

  • Add privacy-focused unit and end-to-end tests covering payload redaction, exception handling, configuration behavior, instrumentation, and shutdown draining.

$mcp_response.content[0].text, $mcp_parameters...arguments.code,

Reviewer's Guide

Introduces optional PostHog MCP usage analytics while preserving existing MCP tools and schemas. A fail-closed allowlist and exception redaction prevent user-provided arguments, results, and error text from being sent; configuration is environment-driven, shutdown flushing is integrated into ASGI lifecycle, documentation is updated, and comprehensive privacy-focused tests are added.

File-Level Changes

Change Details Files
Adds optional PostHog MCP instrumentation with a fail-closed privacy gate that prevents user content from being transmitted.
  • Creates a module-scoped PostHog client and instruments tool calls, tool listings, and handshakes.
  • Uses an allowlist for $mcp_* properties, disables SDK features that alter tool schemas or capture local variables, and redacts exception values.
  • Treats missing configuration differently by environment and degrades safely when analytics initialization or scrubbing fails.
mcp_server/analytics.py
requirements/base.txt
Wires analytics instrumentation and graceful shutdown draining into the MCP server lifecycle without modifying existing tools.
  • Instruments the FastMCP instance before constructing the HTTP app.
  • Wraps the ASGI lifespan to flush pending analytics before the event loop closes, while retaining an atexit fallback.
mcp_server/server.py
Documents the new PostHog configuration, privacy behavior, and server integration.
  • Documents required environment variables, production/development behavior, and the privacy allowlist.
  • Registers the new analytics module and capability in repository and MCP documentation.
  • Adds both PostHog settings to the configuration inspector as MCP-scoped, with the project token marked sensitive.
docs/mcp-server.rst
docs/environment-variables.rst
mcp_server/README.md
AI-MAP.md
services/config_inspector_service.py
Adds regression coverage for privacy guarantees and lifecycle behavior.
  • Verifies tool arguments, responses, error messages, unknown MCP properties, and exception values cannot leak user content.
  • Verifies metadata preservation, non-MCP pass-through, fail-closed scrubbing, SDK allowlist compatibility, environment handling, and shutdown flushing.
tests/test_mcp_analytics_privacy.py

Global exception capture can send user-provided content to PostHog without passing through the privacy gate, so the advertised protection is not guaranteed. Merge should be blocked until exception capture is disabled or all such payloads are safely filtered.

Comment thread mcp_server/analytics.py
`enable_exception_autocapture=True` מתקין `sys.excepthook` ו-

`RuntimeError("mongo query failed for <שם קובץ>")` ב-thread, הראתה את
`mcp_server/app.py` באמת מריץ thread כזה,

`enable_exception_autocapture` נשאר `True` כנדרש — הערוץ לא מבוטל, רק

`capture_exception_code_variables=False` — שם רגרסיה שקטה הייתה מבטלת

`posthog`

7.45.3 מצהיר `requires = ["setuptools>=83.0.0", "wheel"]`, מעל

נוסף `_ALLOWED_BY_EVENT`, שפותח את
השדה על `$mcp_missing_capability` בלבד.
`$mcp_parameters` חסום גם שם.

ב-`get_repo_file`.

**אין אינדקס מובטח על `repo_files`.** `scripts/create_repo_indexes.py`
`_ensure_indexes` הקיים

עוברת על `$mcp_missing_capability`, `$mcp_parameters` נשאר חסום גם שם,

טסט קיים גם הפך למטעה: `test_payload_properties_are_never_allowlisted`
`$mcp_intent` נמצא ב-`_PAYLOAD_PROPERTIES` וכן נשלח בתנאי.

`content.count("\n") + 1` ואני ספרתי `splitlines()`, ולכן כל קובץ שנגמר
`range.total_lines`.

ב-`git_mirror_service`, `lines_count` ב-`database/models.py` וב-
`split("\n")`

`range_out_of_bounds` כשמבקשים אותה.
ש-`total_lines` מצהיר עליה.

`entries.lines` ב-`list_repo_tree` נשאר של האינדקסר (`splitlines`).

תקלה — הקודים ואופן הזיהוי נלקחו מ-`DatabaseManager.safe_create_index`

* fix(mcp): delegate repo index creation to the canonical safe_create_index

The previous round added an index for repo_files with its own conflict
handling, copied from DatabaseManager.safe_create_index. It copied the
detection and dropped the verification: it treated codes 85/86 and
"already exists" as success, while the real helper re-reads the existing
indexes after a conflict and only succeeds if the keys AND the unique
flag match (_index_matches). Code 86 means "same name, different keys" —
exactly not covered — so the duplicate would have reported success and
left lookups on a full collection scan.

It also asked for a non-unique index, reasoning that only lookups were
needed. That missed the second-order effect: a non-unique index on those
keys blocks the unique one. scripts/create_repo_indexes.py declares
(repo_name, path) as unique, and the indexer's upsert assumes that
identity — the script would have hit IndexOptionsConflict and failed, so
a fresh database would have stayed without the constraint permanently.

RepoBackend now takes an injected db_manager (the same wiring
ProductionBackend already uses) and delegates both indexes with
unique=True. Without a manager no index is attempted — better than
duplicating the policy again. Each creation sits in its own try so one
failure neither skips the other nor takes the server down; a missing
index costs performance, not correctness.

Also documents the byte-for-byte line-range behaviour on CRLF files.
Splitting on "\n" keeps two properties that splitlines() would break:
the full range returns the file exactly, and joining adjacent ranges
reconstructs it. It also keeps count_lines consistent with file.lines in
the same response — the contradiction fixed one round ago.

* fix(tests): decouple the db-health cooldown test from the wall clock

Unit Tests (3.11) failed with `assert 200 == 429` while Unit Tests (3.12)
passed on the same commit — the 3.11 runner took 6m20s against 4m19s.

Root cause, by elimination on webapp/app.py:5431-5464. The second request
can only return 200 if the exemption zeroed the cooldown or if the window
had already expired. The exemption reads session["user_id"], and the test
uses a fresh unauthenticated test_client, so it returns False on its first
line. That leaves the window: the test gave it two seconds, and the first
request creates a thread plus an asyncio loop for the first time in the
process (_ensure_db_health_async_loop). CI runs pytest -n auto, so several
test processes compete for the same CPU and that setup can outlast the
window — after which the endpoint correctly returns 200.

Reproduced by delaying the first request by 2.5s: request two comes back
200 with a 2s window and 429 with the long one, and still 429 at 5s. The
test asserts that a second call inside the window is rate-limited, not how
long the window lasts, so the window is now long enough that no plausible
runner stall can expire it.

Also restores coverage a reviewer flagged as lost: the index-failure test
now asserts the warning actually reaches the log, with the collection name
and the traceback. A missing index leaves lookups on a full collection
scan, which reads as "a bit slow" rather than as a fault — if it never
reaches the log, nobody knows to look for it. Verified by mutation:
dropping the logging, dropping exc_info, or dropping the collection name
each fails the test.

table, but never checked the type of the value it then let through. A
dict or a list under $mcp_error_message passed intact — measured: a dict
carrying a file body reached the wire with the content inside.

The same hole was already in the older $mcp_intent exception from #3315,
so fixing only the new one would have been a patch. Both exceptions open
a field whose whole justification is "a sentence a person reads"; a
structure under that name is not that sentence, and it travels whole.
Anything admitted by a conditional exception must now be a str. The fixed
allowlist is untouched, since $mcp_listed_tool_names and $mcp_duration_ms
are legitimately not strings.

Also fixes a test whose name said the opposite of its assertion. It was
called ..._does_not_leak_into_other_events while asserting that the
message *does* pass on a $mcp_missing_capability event. Keying the
exception on the error type alone, with no event condition, is what the
spec asked for, and a validation error on get_more_tools is still a
validation error — so the behaviour stands and the name now describes it.
Narrowing it to $mcp_tool_call would be a spec change, not a bug fix, and
is not made here.

And the report_missing section still called $mcp_intent the only
exception. It is now the first of two, pointing at the table that carries
the full list and the warning.

Verified by mutation: dropping the string check, applying it to the new
exception only, blocking everything conditional, and extending it to the
fixed allowlist each fail.

* feat(mcp): let a ValidationError message through the privacy gate

A failed validation reached the dashboard as a counter with no field name,
so "the agent got it wrong" and "the schema is unclear" looked identical.
$mcp_error_message now ships when $mcp_error_type is exactly
"ValidationError", and in no other case.

Same mechanism as the existing per-event exception, not a second gate: a
dict from a discriminator to an extra allowlist, unioned into the same
`allowed` set on the same line. _ALLOWED_BY_EVENT keys on the event name,
_ALLOWED_BY_ERROR_TYPE keys on the error type.

This widening carries a real cost, measured before it was accepted rather
than assumed away. Pydantic renders the rejected input_value into the
message. It caps that at 50 characters, but the cap keeps the head and the
tail, so a secret at either end survives whole: measured on pydantic
2.12.3, the version pinned in requirements/base.txt, a 500-character input
ending in AWS_KEY=... came back with that tail intact. The wider case is a
missing required field, where pydantic reports the entire arguments object
as input_value — so save_file without file_name puts a slice of the file
body in the message.

The bound is scope, not sanitization: one error type, one key. Nothing
here rewrites pydantic's string, because invented scrubbing of free text
fails quietly, which is the whole of secret-in-derived-text. Length is
already bounded by the SDK at 2048 characters; pydantic itself has no cap
on error count (300 bad fields produce 77,619 characters), so relying on
the source alone would not have been enough.

Fails closed. A missing $mcp_error_type, a non-string one, or any other
value blocks the message. $mcp_parameters stays blocked on this event, so
the exception cannot be turned into a way to read a call's arguments.

Verified by mutation, seven of them: removing the exception, matching
fuzzily instead of exactly, opening every error type, opening
$mcp_parameters alongside, dropping the $exception_list redaction, and
both directions of the type check — str() instead of isinstance (which an
object printing as "ValidationError" would slip through) and `type() is
str` (which would reject a str subclass). The first pass missed the
str()/isinstance gap; the test that closes it was written because the
mutation survived.

The module docstring and docs/mcp-server.rst previously said free text
left by exactly one route. Both now say two, and the second carries the
measurement.
