📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds configurable Windows and WSL SSH runners. It persists runner settings, exposes them through desktop IPC and web settings, resolves WSL metadata, routes SSH operations through the selected runner, and adds runner-aware tunnel forwarding and tests. In `@packages/ssh/src/command.ts`:
- Around line 73-75: Update remote server lifecycle management around
remoteStateKey and stopRemoteServer so multiple runner-specific entries sharing
the same remoteStateKey are reference-counted or otherwise tracked; only stop
the managed server when the final active entry closes. Add a regression test
covering native and WSL runners using the same address, disconnecting one, and
confirming the other remains ready.
In `@packages/ssh/src/runner.ts`:
- Around line 49-56: Move rm -rf "$runtime_dir" outside the pid-file conditional
in the cleanup script so directories are removed when no pid file exists.
Preserve PID validation and process termination, but ensure malformed pid data
cannot exit before the runtime directory removal.
- Around line 138-139: Update the bash wrapper arguments in both spawnSsh and
preflightWslSsh from login-shell mode to non-login mode by replacing “bash -lc”
with “bash -c”, preserving the existing command and output handling.

Integrated into Before upstream submission or claiming the full desktop path is verified, complete the actual Windows desktop session: runner/distro selection, selected credentials, locked-key prompt, reconnect, and disconnect cleanup. Existing Windows-to-WSL smoke tests and fixture screenshots remain useful evidence, but do not establish full Electron IPC or interactive passphrase behavior. Integration: a3ad93268, tree |

Windows desktop SSH environments currently read Windows OpenSSH credentials even when WSL-only mode is selected. Users whose keys and SSH agent live in the distro cannot connect. Run SSH inside the chosen distro when WSL-only mode is active, and expose an SSH credentials selection when both backends are enabled.
The selected runner covers host discovery, target resolution, launch, pairing, tunnels, and cleanup. WSL discovery preserves Linux absolute Include paths; a login shell supplies the distro agent; POSIX askpass reads the cached in-app password through forwarded environment variables. Distro-side PID/start-time tracking and a cancellation marker terminate the Linux SSH process during disconnect and scope cleanup. NAT-mode tunnels use a scoped Windows loopback bridge, while mirrored networking uses loopback directly. Saved environments retain their runner and distro and report mismatches instead of silently changing credentials.
Validation: 96 focused tests passed across 11 files, including real Linux process tests for arguments, stdin, askpass, early cancellation and child termination; a real loopback TCP forwarding/half-close/cleanup test; runner selection, preflight, host discovery, persistence, settings IPC and search tests. SSH, desktop and web typechecks pass. Targeted lint passes with the existing ConnectionsSettings memoization warning.
Additional smoke tests passed for native Windows-to-WSL command execution, SSH key and isolated-agent authentication, HTTP tunnel forwarding, and production cancellation. Full Electron IPC and interactive passphrase prompts remain untested. Before/after UI evidence: #2 (comment).
Implementation: Codex (GPT-6). Planning/design review: Claude Fable 5.1 via Claude Code CLI.
