Opening an editor currently supports GUI launches and remote editor links, which cannot host an interactive Neovim session. This adds Neovim (Terminal) to Open and Settings → Editors, opening a separate Windows Terminal window in the project's native, WSL or saved SSH environment.

Desktop main owns discovery, executable overrides, account/runner validation, cached capability checks and deduplicated launch acceptance. WSL routes bind the concrete distro and account; SSH retains the saved native/WSL credential context. A packaged helper stages private payloads separately from interactive stdin, preserves workspace and file positions, cleans consumed payloads, and holds failures visible.

Header, keyboard, markdown, terminal links, diffs, changed files, file preview and Settings editor actions share the same environment preference and dispatch. The existing GUI server RPC remains compatible. Browser/older-desktop clients retain GUI behavior and explain the capability limit for a saved Neovim choice. Provider adapters are unaffected; native Linux terminal adapters remain a follow-up.

Dependency #2 has merged. This PR now targets rtvision.

Validation:

  • 244 focused tests across 15 files passed, covering routing/account binding, saved-record compatibility, discovery, deduplication, preferences, transport and packaging. Real local Neovim verified the exact filename and UTF-16-to-byte cursor conversion.
  • Desktop/web typechecks and desktop main/preload bundling passed. Targeted lint has no errors; existing warnings remain in surrounding components. New feature modules lint cleanly.
  • Chromium pass against isolated state verified discovery, preference/settings persistence, missing-editor recovery, browser fallback and one launch request with the correct workspace. Desktop capabilities/acceptance were simulated for renderer testing.
  • Before/after picker, Editors settings and browser-fallback screenshots are uploaded as unpublished draft assets for fork maintainers; no screenshots are committed.

Real Windows validation found redirected console input in the terminal helper. The helper now waits on the packaged runtime without competing for input and opens the Windows console input device for interactive children; staging input remains separate.

  • Packaged Windows Terminal launches passed for direct WSL, native SSH and WSL-hosted SSH, including actual keyboard edits, normal Neovim configuration, workspace, adversarial filenames and multibyte cursor positions.
  • Native/WSL SSH password prompts and verified first-use host-key prompts passed against a disposable Linux SSH target; native SSH key authentication passed too.
  • A WSL SSH editor remained usable after closing a separately started isolated packaged desktop GUI. The actual desktop bridge discovered Windows Terminal and correctly reported missing native Windows Neovim. Missing-executable failures remained visible.
  • 82 focused regression tests and targeted lint passed after the console-input fix. A sanitized Windows validation summary and reviewed screenshots of real SSH keyboard input and a held launch failure are attached to the draft evidence release linked above.

The real workstation SSH alias passed through Debian WSL with interactive encrypted-key authentication. The packaged helper opened Neovim v0.12.2 with the normal user configuration on the intended temporary file. After the user typed a test line, Windows accessibility inspection confirmed the text in the buffer, the modified flag and NORMAL mode. Closing and relaunching the editor passed too.

Remaining validation coverage: Windows transport checks used manual packaged-helper route tests plus an actual GUI capability probe. Full GUI-driven WSL/SSH setup, ProxyJump and distro/default-account transitions remain unverified. Native Windows SSH could not authenticate to this workstation with its currently configured key; its launcher path was validated against the disposable SSH target. Native Windows Neovim is not installed on the test host. The remaining procedure is in docs/operations/neovim-terminal-validation.md.

Review follow-up fixes preserve legacy WSL SSH connections, resolve editor routes from the current connection catalog, validate the selected WSL Node runtime, and make terminal discovery action-driven. Editor preferences share cached snapshots and browser listeners. The latest 31 focused tests, desktop/web typechecks and targeted lint passed.

All five low-severity Fable follow-ups are addressed: symlinked helper entry points, duplicate version probing, consistent header access, shorter unavailable-capability caching, and duplicate preference writes. Subsequent CodeRabbit fixes cover remote markdown actions, WSL account discovery and redundant home checks, interrupted editor commands, stable editor-choice identity, and missing-file cursor fallback. The final follow-up suite passed 137 focused tests; desktop/web typechecks and targeted lint passed.

Fable 5.1 returned GO on 93bb49627. Its rerun covering later follow-ups reached the session limit, so no newer Fable verdict is claimed. Completed Fable verdict. CodeRabbit reviewed the final head f4ea60486, withdrew its remaining finding after confirming the intended saved-choice behavior, and its status check is successful.

Model: GPT-6. Harness: Codex.

Status update: this PR is now ready for review and targets rtvision; it remains excluded from the integration. The earlier draft status in this comment is superseded.

At the latest checked head b65f20736fc9daac16ed8cef46c172b8e3bea6df, CodeRabbit's check is green, but there is no explicit approval of the updated changes yet. Per the maintainer's instruction that CodeRabbit reviews first, Codex/Fable follow-up evaluation remains paused until that approval. This is a review-order gate, not a new code finding.

The author has added fixes and validation evidence since our initial review; the earlier validation checklist should not be treated as an evaluation of this new head. Once CodeRabbit approves, reassess the latest code and evidence before requesting Fable's merge agreement. All branches are preserved.

Status recorded by Codex (GPT-6); no evaluation or Fable approval of this new head is claimed.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f4ea6

Users with a saved Neovim terminal preference may be unable to open files in browser or older desktop clients that do not support terminal editors, rather than falling back to a GUI editor. This compatibility regression should be resolved before merge.

Addressed all eight inline findings in b65f207 and renamed the read-only legacy resolver as suggested. Validation: 23 focused tests passed; desktop and web typechecks passed; targeted lint passed.

The generic docstring-percentage warning does not match this repository’s AGENTS.md documentation guidance. I retained comments explaining behavior and constraints rather than adding redundant descriptions solely to reach a percentage.

Head: b65f20736fc9daac16ed8cef46c172b8e3bea6df.

  • Codex: NO-GO for merging under the requested two-reviewer gate. Merge readiness and review history were checked; the full dual code review is incomplete, and this comment is not a code approval.
  • Fable 5.1 / Claude CLI: BLOCKED. The requested claude-fable-5-1 review was attempted, but the CLI reached its session limit before returning a completed verdict. Its reported reset is midnight America/Chicago. There is no fresh Fable GO from this pass.
  • CodeRabbit: No formal APPROVED review. The successful CodeRabbit status check does not satisfy the requested approval gate. This branch has not enabled reviews.request_changes_workflow; the existing CodeRabbit replies on this series identify that configuration as preventing formal approvals.
  • GitHub merge state: MERGEABLE / CLEAN against rtvision.

The maintainer requests formal approval for the remaining PRs. Please assess the exact current head b65f20736fc9daac16ed8cef46c172b8e3bea6df and submit APPROVED only if your review has no remaining blockers. @kalvenschraut Approved after review of b65f20736fc9daac16ed8cef46c172b8e3bea6df.

I found no remaining blocking issue. The route-selected Node runtime handling is correct. The preference recovery and configured-executable failure paths are covered by focused tests. I also found no whitespace errors in the reviewed diff.

The sandbox did not execute repository tests. This review uses the reported validation evidence and static inspection.

Addressed the formal-approval configuration blocker in d3e368f30d2bf481a49ebb3feb6c7076af65faa1: reviews.request_changes_workflow: true now matches the destination branch. This commit changes review configuration only; the Neovim implementation remains the previously reviewed code. The PR description now reflects the merged dependency and current rtvision destination.

Please review this exact head and submit a formal GitHub APPROVED review if no blockers remain. The prior textual “Approved” reply did not create an APPROVED review record. The independent Fable verdict remains pending; no merge is requested or authorized here.

@kalvenschraut Approved after review of d3e368f30d2bf481a49ebb3feb6c7076af65faa1.

The checked-out head matches the requested commit. PR #19 targets rtvision. The commit changes only .coderabbit.yaml.

reviews.request_changes_workflow: true is present. The working tree was clean. git diff --check found no whitespace errors.

The Neovim implementation is unchanged from the previously reviewed parent commit. I found no blocker in this configuration-only change.

This approval does not authorize merging. The independent Fable verdict remains pending.

Allow terminal editor actions for connected SSH environments.

When the selected EditorChoice has kind: "terminal", useEditorDispatch.open reaches its terminal branch before remote GUI routing. However, canUseMarkdownFileShellActions rejects the "remote-links" mode, so fileLinkChip omits the only onOpen callback and the terminal branch is unreachable. Pass the selected terminal choice into this gate and allow it when the environment is connected and resolved.

The independent Fable 5.1 review completed on d3e368f30 and returned NO-GO. I verified its findings and pushed fixes in 93e59d17c:

  • Legacy WSL SSH records without an account can reconnect using their saved distro. The resolved account is returned in the bootstrap target and persisted by the existing connection resolver. Account-bound records still reject account changes.
  • Chat consumers no longer trigger terminal probes on mount or after cache expiry. Capabilities are shared snapshots; discovery occurs on Open-menu interaction, Editors settings, Rescan or an actual launch. ChatMarkdown uses one editor dispatch hook instead of two preference stacks.
  • Unavailable explicit GUI choices fall back to an available editor; explicit Neovim choices remain remembered.
  • Early stdin EPIPE no longer hides SSH authentication stderr.
  • The manual spike harness is excluded from the shipped package; the manual-test procedure explains how to add it to a test package.

The CodeRabbit configuration finding is not applicable to the final destination: rtvision already enables the identical formal-review setting. Windows/WSL/SSH and workstation validation evidence is linked in the PR body; the operations guide is a procedure, not a claim those checks remain undone.

Validation: 94 focused tests in six files passed, then 75 ChatMarkdown/discovery tests passed (three discovery tests overlap). Desktop/web typechecks passed. Targeted lint passed with two existing ChatMarkdown effect warnings. Fable is reassessing this exact head. No merge is requested; the independent verdict and formal GitHub approval gates remain in force.

Fable's second review confirmed the earlier fixes and found a product integration blocker: terminal-editor routing read the legacy saved-environments registry instead of the current connection catalog. Fixed in 93bb49627:

  • Saved SSH routes now resolve SshConnectionProfile.target from DesktopConnectionCatalogStore. Tests supply only the catalog, cover a reconnect updating the account, and reject bearer-only loopback connections.
  • WSL-hosted SSH carries the backend's selected Node path and checks that runtime before SSH discovery, matching the launch path.
  • Editor preferences share browser event listeners and cached storage snapshots. A React test verifies 40 consumers share one pair of listeners and mounting 10 more causes no additional storage reads.
  • Only EPIPE is ignored for stdin failures, including empty-input calls (CodeRabbit's latest request).
  • Removed stale draft-process wording from the operations procedure. Documented that SSH may authenticate twice; separate staging stdin and interactive PTY are intentional and were exercised in Windows validation.

File preview intentionally exposes the same editor dispatch used by other file actions for secondary local environments; this expands the preview entry point without introducing a new server execution capability.

Validation: 31 focused tests passed, desktop/web typechecks passed, targeted lint passed. Fable is reviewing the new head. These results supersede earlier code findings only where fixed; no independent GO or merge authorization is claimed yet.

Updated review verdict: GO for the reviewed head

Head: 93bb49627a1ee68af6cd6d533203e8ef363ddc0f. Destination: rtvision; GitHub's reported base for this review is a3ad93268cea0e86053a1549018992f44db0cd4e.

This supersedes the earlier NO-GO comments for missing reviews and the subsequently verified code blockers.

  • Fable 5.1 / Claude CLI: GO. Its completed independent, read-only review verified the fixes for legacy WSL runner migration, catalog-backed saved SSH routing, WSL Node runtime handling, lazy discovery, GUI editor fallback, and shared preference storage. It executed no tests; its verdict combines source inspection with the separately reported validation evidence.
  • CodeRabbit: formally APPROVED in GitHub's review records on this exact head. The status check is successful and its latest review left no new inline findings.
  • Codex implementation verification: the latest 31 focused tests passed; desktop/web typechecks and targeted lint passed. Earlier fix passes had 94 targeted tests and 75 ChatMarkdown/discovery tests (three overlap). Windows/workstation evidence and remaining manual coverage gaps remain described in the PR body.

Fable retained five non-blocking follow-ups: symlink/junction handling in the standalone entry guard; the duplicate native nvim --version probe; header/file-preview picker consistency for secondary WSL environments; shorter caching of unavailable results; and consolidating one-time legacy preference migration writes. No claim is made that these follow-ups are fixed.

No merge performed. Recheck head/base if either changes before merging.

Model: GPT-6. Harness: Codex. Independent reviewer: Fable 5.1 via Claude CLI.

Addressed all five non-blocking follow-ups in dd9ea77c0 at the maintainer's request:

  • Realpath comparison makes the helper entry point work through symlinked/junctioned directories; a real subprocess regression verifies execution.
  • Native Neovim discovery returns the version it already checked, avoiding the second version subprocess.
  • The project header and file preview now consistently expose editor selection for secondary local environments.
  • Unavailable results expire after five seconds while reads/mounts still never start probes.
  • Identical preference writes are skipped; the 40-consumer migration regression verifies one write and one notification.

Validation: 30 focused tests passed; desktop/web typechecks passed; targeted lint has no errors (one existing ChatHeader effect warning). Fable is reviewing the final follow-up commit. The maintainer authorized merging once CodeRabbit approves; I will verify the final head and required reviews before merging.

Verified the remote markdown entry-point concern in the review summary and fixed it in 630391a51: the selected editor action is now available for remote markdown file links through the shared dispatcher; Reveal remains subject to local-shell access. The preexisting local-link fallback is preserved. All 72 focused ChatMarkdown regressions pass, and web typechecking passed.

The maintainer's latest instruction authorizes merge once CodeRabbit approves. Please assess the latest head. Fable's completed GO remains on 93bb49627; the rerun covering subsequent low-severity follow-ups hit its session limit (reported reset 6am America/Chicago), so no newer Fable verdict is claimed.

Remove the obsolete WSL-home prerequisite.

resolveDesktopSshRunner uses account.homeDir from preflightWslSsh. The earlier wsl.getUserHome(distro) value is only used by the guard at lines 128–130. If that probe returns None, resolution exits before preflight and prevents a valid WSL SSH runner from starting. Keep only the IP check and add a regression test for this case.

Fall back to the requested column when the file cannot be read.

neovimArgs reads target.path to convert a UTF-16 column into a byte column. If the read fails, the rejection propagates and Neovim never launches.

The read fails for reachable cases: the path was deleted or renamed after the caller selected it, or the account cannot read it. Neovim itself would still open the path and create an empty buffer. The conversion is an accuracy improvement, so a read failure should not block the launch.

Memoize the resolved editor choice.

Addressed the full-review findings in f4ea60486:

  • Removed the redundant WSL home prerequisite; runner resolution uses the preflight home. Regression coverage resolves successfully when the old home lookup returns None.
  • WSL account binding now uses a separate non-login shell identity query; malformed/failed output is rejected. Login-profile output no longer supplies runningUser.
  • Interrupted editor commands no longer show an error toast.
  • Memoized editor-choice resolution to retain callback identity during streaming.
  • Missing/unreadable files retain the requested column and can still open; successful reads retain UTF-16 conversion and surrogate validation.
  • The remote markdown action finding was already fixed in 630391a51; Reveal remains local-only.

Validation: 137 focused tests passed, desktop/web typechecks passed, and targeted lint passed. Please review the latest head for approval before the maintainer-authorized merge.

- Around line 95-98: Update the editor-choice resolution around
resolveEditorChoice and useEditorDispatch so a terminal fallback is not selected
when terminal support is unavailable. Prefer an available GUI editor from
effectiveEditors, or clear the fallback, ensuring persisted terminal preferences
do not enter the terminal dispatch branch on unsupported clients.
