fix(release): generate the SBOM after install so it enumerates what ships - #56
Conversation
…hips The sbom job pointed syft at a bare, never-installed wheel (pip download --no-deps), so the shipped SPDX SBOM had one entry and zero runtime dependencies, and the old "packages[] is non-empty" check waved it through. Install the published wheel plus its resolved runtime dependencies into an isolated pip install --target tree, scan that tree, and fail loud via scripts/release/validate_sbom.py unless wave-sdk and every unconditional Requires-Dist appear with a version. Validator is unit-tested in tests/test_release_scripts.py. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Reviewer's GuideThe release SBOM job now downloads the exact published wheel, installs it and its binary runtime dependency closure into an isolated target, scans that installed tree, and validates the resulting SPDX inventory against the wheel’s own unconditional dependency metadata. New stdlib validation logic and subprocess tests prevent the former green-but-incomplete one-entry SBOM from shipping. Sequence diagram for release SBOM generation and validationsequenceDiagram

Compare SBOM versions with the installed distribution versions.
versioned_package_names discards each versionInfo. An entry with the correct name and an arbitrary version, such as wave-sdk version 0.0.0, passes validation.
Retain the versions from both the SBOM and sbom-env. Reject each SDK or required dependency whose SBOM version differs from its installed metadata version. Otherwise, the release can publish an incorrect SBOM and produce incorrect vulnerability results.

Defect
The
sbomjob in.github/workflows/release.ymlgenerated the SPDX SBOM before anything was installed. It ranpip download wave-sdk==<version> --no-deps --only-binary=:all:(one bare wheel on disk, no dependencies), then pointedanchore/sbom-action(syft) at that directory. A wheel sitting on disk carries no resolved dependency graph, so the SBOM could never enumerate httpx, pydantic, or their transitive closure. The validation step only assertedpackages[]was non-empty, which the single self-describing entry satisfied, so the empty SBOM shipped green.Measured locally with the same syft the action wraps, on the published
wave_sdk-2.2.0-py3-none-any.whl:Why it matters
An SBOM that predates install is a claim, not an inventory. A consumer (or our governance evidence) reads the release SBOM to answer "what code actually runs when I install this?" -- and the old one answered with a single entry and no dependencies. That is worse than no SBOM: it looks like coverage and is not.
The fix
release.yml(sbomjob, stillcontents: read):pip downloadof the published wheel: it is the provenance anchor (the exact bytes PyPI serves) and still fails loud if PyPI has no wheel..whlwas downloaded, thenpip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: --target sbom-env <that wheel file>. The wheel FILE is installed (notwave-sdk==VERSIONre-resolved), so syft describes the bytes that were downloaded.--targetgives a plain directory with no venv bootstrap packages and no runner site-packages leaking into the inventory;--only-binary=:all:means a dependency that would need an sdist build fails loud instead of executing build scripts inside the release job.anchore/sbom-actionatsbom-env(the installed tree). Same pinned action SHA, same SPDX-JSON output filename.scripts/release/validate_sbom.py(stdlib only, following the existingscripts/release/*.py+.release-toolingsparse-checkout pattern) reads the installed wheel ofwave-sdkunder--target, takes its unconditionalRequires-Distentries (no;marker -- extras andpython_version-gated deps are legitimately absent on the release interpreter), PEP 503-normalizes names on both sides, and requires wave-sdk plus every one of those dependencies to appear inpackages[]with a realversionInfo. Emptypackages[], a version mismatch against the release version, and a floor of 0 are each refused. Exit 1 with a::error::line on failure, 2 on unusable inputs.tests/test_release_scripts.pygains seven subprocess tests for the validator, including the exact one-entry defect shape,NOASSERTIONhandling, version mismatch, floor-of-zero, and the empty-target usage error.Verification

Medium Risk
Changes release supply-chain artifacts and CI gates; incorrect validation could block releases or ship misleading SBOMs, but scope is limited to the SBOM job and does not touch PyPI publish auth.
Overview
Fixes release SBOM generation so it reflects what actually ships when someone installs
wave-sdk, not a lone wheel file on disk. The
sbomjob inrelease.ymlstill downloads the published PyPI wheel for provenance, but nowpip install --target sbom-envthat exact wheel (with runtime deps resolved, wheels-only) before syft runs.anchore/sbom-actionscanssbom-envinstead ofsbom-src. The old inline “packages[]is non-empty” check is replaced byvalidate_sbom.py, checked out via the same sparse.release-toolingpattern as other release scripts.scripts/release/validate_sbom.pyderives a floor from the installed wheel’s unconditionalRequires-Distmetadata (PEP 503–normalized names, realversionInforequired) and fails the job ifwave-sdkor any declared runtime dep is missing—catching the one-entry uninstalled-wheel SBOM that previously passed.tests/test_release_scripts.pyadds seven subprocess tests covering the defect shape, empty SBOM, version mismatch, marker-gated deps, and usage errors.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 02e8dce.
