Editor strips normal style tags like highlights

Description

The editor strips style attributes in the template editor. Adding background-color to a span directly in the html tab results in automatic removal of the attributes.

I'm just trying to add highlights to text but don't think they're available in the editor.

Is this intentional? And is there a way around it?

You are not supposed to switch between the editor and html view.
If the editor doesn't have the feature you want, stick to the HTML editor.
