Exposes per-category memory breakdown metrics for system, vm, docker and zfs cache. Mirroring the Unraid dashboard's ram widget breakdown.

Add four new fields to memory metrics:

  • zfsCache
  • vm
  • docker
  • system

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Memory utilization now includes separate readings for ZFS cache, virtual machines, and Docker, alongside a system memory figure for RAM not attributed to those sources.
    • When readings are unavailable, affected breakdown values may be null; the system figure treats unavailable source readings as zero and never falls below zero.

CLD-709

Exposes per-category memory breakdown metrics for system, vm, docker and zfs cache mirroring the Unraid dashboard's ram breakdown.

Add four new fields to memory metrics:

Walkthrough

Adds cached collection of ZFS, VM, and Docker memory usage. Exposes those values and computed system memory through GraphQL. Registers the resolver and service in the metrics module.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b4949

On default Unraid, the new Docker memory value can overstate usage; in cgroup-v1 mode it can report zero. These defects are limited to the new breakdown fields, so the PR is mergeable with follow-up, but the values should not be relied on until corrected.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b4949

The new fields retain the existing information-read permission, but a stalled host collector could leave memory-breakdown requests waiting indefinitely. The risk is primarily to availability of these fields; no authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: An unresolved host collector keeps the shared collection promise pending, so concurrent and later requests for the new memory fields can remain blocked without a recovery deadline.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly exposed values are host-wide aggregate byte counts, not container identities or configuration. INFO-authorized readers gain these aggregates, and their requests can initiate reads from host-level producers; runtime privileges and any wider request-resource impact are unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — No bypass is visible at the new field boundary: every resolver method declares the INFO read permission and has no caller-supplied collector argument. Permission tests expect INFO read access for ADMIN, VIEWER, and CONNECT roles but not GUEST; deployed enforcement and independently scoped API-key permissions were not verified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Coalescing limits duplicate collection during normal concurrent polling, but a pending producer prevents cache settlement and recovery for later readers of the new fields. External request cancellation or timeouts were not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply bounded collection deadlines and container-read concurrency, with cancellation or safe recovery for a collection that does not settle; preserve in-flight deduplication so retries do not multiply host work.

Pull request overview

Exposes additional per-category memory usage fields on the existing MemoryUtilization GraphQL type to mirror the Unraid dashboard RAM breakdown, backed by a new service that collects ZFS ARC, VM, and Docker memory usage with short-lived caching.

Changes:

  • Adds MemoryBreakdownService to collect ZFS ARC cache size, active VM balloon RSS, and Docker container cgroup memory usage (with caching).
  • Adds MemoryUtilizationResolver to expose zfsCache, vm, docker, and computed system fields on MemoryUtilization.
  • Adds unit tests for the new resolver and service behaviors (including caching).

I have view the metrics to confirm they are pulling the same values as the UI dashboard. Tests for both query and subscription comleted

🟡 Minor · Keep only non-overlapping kernel memory counters. · memory-breakdown.service.ts:1-40

api/src/unraid-api/graph/resolvers/info/memory/memory-breakdown.service.ts:1-40
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep only non-overlapping kernel memory counters.

getContainerMemory adds kernel and its component counters. In cgroup v2, kernel already includes counters such as kernel_stack, pagetables, percpu, sock, and vmalloc. A container with these allocations can therefore report inflated Docker memory, which also reduces the reported system memory.

Retain kernel and remove its component counters from the whitelist.
