A file-edit diff in the chat timeline imported Pierre's FileDiff directly, so it never got the stylesheet every other diff surface receives, and nothing ever asked for the file's syntax grammar. The result was a fixed blue-black card that ignored the active palette, containing plain untokenised text.

Two commits, one per defect.

1. Follow the active theme

StyledFileDiff is the inline counterpart to the existing StyledDiffCodeView, and the timeline's two call sites now go through it. Both adapters share one stylesheet, so a palette reaches an inline diff the same way it reaches the panel.

The subtle part: the React FileDiff puts className on the diffs-container element itself, while CodeView puts it on a wrapper. A descendant selector silently matches nothing — caught only by measuring the rendered element, not by reading the code.

The lint guard that already steered CodeView to the styled adapter now covers FileDiff too.

2. Highlight the file's own language

Pierre tokenises once on mount and never re-tokenises. Nothing on the inline path requested the grammar, so highlighting was a coincidence: a thread whose markdown fences happened to be ts got highlighted TypeScript diffs, and a thread whose fences were bash never did. Even in a lucky thread it was a race — expanding a diff before the fence rendered lost the colour.

The diff is now gated on its own grammar, derived from the file name. The unhighlighted diff is the fallback for both waiting and failing, matching the pattern the markdown code block already uses, error boundary included.

This one is not a regression from the theming commit; reverting that change entirely leaves the diff just as plain.

Screenshots

The same diff, same thread, under Rosé Pine Dawn. A warm page leaves the unthemed card's hard white and grey slab separators nowhere to hide; Catppuccin Mocha is included to show dark themes follow too.

Highlighting, with the inline diff and the panel side by side and both tokenised:

fixed

Verification

Measured in a real client against Catppuccin, not read off the source.

Case Before After
Surface under Catppuccin Mocha --diffs-bg: #0a0a0a, radius 0px matches --code-background exactly, radius 8px
Surface under Catppuccin Latte same fixed dark follows to Latte's light code surface
Thread with only bash/text fences, .ts diffs 2 colours (plain) 11 distinct token colours
Thread with a ts fence, diff opened immediately 2 colours (lost the race) 6 distinct token colours

Also checked and found sound: switching appearance with a diff open re-tokenises correctly; long lines still scroll horizontally inside Pierre's own scroller; extensionless paths (LICENSE, bin/t3code) resolve to text and degrade gracefully.

Tests: 42 across components/diffs and MessagesTimeline. The four language cases were confirmed non-vacuous — they fail if the gate stops deriving from the file name.

Model: Claude Opus 5 (1M context), via T3 Code.

A file-edit diff in the timeline imported Pierre's `FileDiff` directly, so
it never received the stylesheet every other diff surface gets. Pierre then
painted its own bundled colors, and the diff sat on a fixed blue-black card
regardless of the palette in use — the one element in the thread that
ignored the theme.

Add StyledFileDiff, the inline counterpart to StyledDiffCodeView, and route
the timeline's two call sites through it. Both adapters now share one
stylesheet, so a palette reaches an inline diff the same way it reaches the
panel.

Worth knowing: the React FileDiff puts className on the diffs-container
element itself, while CodeView puts it on a wrapper. The light-DOM rule has
to target the element, not a descendant, or it silently matches nothing and
the surface tokens never land.

Inline diffs keep a framed card rather than the panel's borderless surface,
since they sit inside message chrome instead of owning a viewport.

The lint guard that already steered CodeView to the styled adapter now
covers FileDiff too, so the raw component cannot quietly come back.

Pierre tokenizes a file diff once on mount and never re-tokenizes. Nothing
on the inline path asked for the file's grammar, so a diff mounted before
some other surface happened to load that language rendered as plain text
and stayed that way for as long as the row was open.

That made highlighting a coincidence. A thread whose markdown fences were
`ts` got highlighted TypeScript diffs; a thread whose fences were `bash`
never did, no matter how long you waited. Even in a lucky thread it was a
race — expanding a diff before the fence rendered lost the colour, and
collapsing and reopening the row got it back.

Gate the diff on its own grammar, derived from the file name, before
handing it to Pierre. The unhighlighted diff is the fallback for both
waiting and failing: the change itself is what the reader came for, and
colour arriving a beat later, or not at all, costs them nothing. Only the
first file of a given language waits; after that the promise is cached and
nothing suspends.

Same shape the markdown code block already uses for this hazard, error
boundary included — a cosmetic dependency must not be able to take the
surrounding thread down with it.

This is not a regression from the theming change. Reverting that change
entirely leaves the diff just as plain.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Added StyledFileDiff to provide shared styling, syntax-highlighting coordination, and fallback rendering for Pierre file diffs. Updated chat diff consumers and import restrictions to use the styled adapter.

Changes

Styled file-diff rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
StyledFileDiff adapter and styling
apps/web/src/components/diffs/StyledFileDiff.tsx, apps/web/src/components/diffs/StyledDiffCodeView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/diffs/StyledFileDiff.test.tsx, apps/web/src/index.css
Added the StyledFileDiff API and implementation. It applies shared CSS, waits for syntax grammar loading, and falls back to unhighlighted output on loading or highlighting errors. Added tests for props, classes, themes, and file languages.
File-diff integration and import enforcement
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx, vite.config.ts
Changed review-comment and work-entry diffs to use StyledFileDiff. Direct CodeView and FileDiff imports now trigger the styled replacement guidance.
