[Bug]: Usability Issue: Song Structure doesnt behave correctly #634
I'm on the latest release and the issue still happens.
I searched existing issues and didn't find a duplicate.
What happened?
Song Structure Experimental is a on/off button but once the song structure is displayed, it doesn't go away when the button is clicked. Only the button text color changes to show button acitivity
Steps to reproduce
Click song structure button
Song structure is displayed
Click the same button again, the button changes state
but the song structure shown doesn't go away
Suggestions:
display the song structure by default. And get rid of the button.
or
Ensure that the button displays the song structure, and clicking it, the song structure part of the UI will be taken away and brought back when clicked again
Thanks for writing this up, and for the two suggestions. They were the right questions to ask, and the answer turned out to be that you were looking at the wrong button, which is my doing rather than yours.
There are two separate controls here and only one of them is about what you can see.
The one you found, "Song structure", sits with the stem choices because it is a choice about the next import. It tells the pipeline to spend an extra pass working out where the intro, verses and choruses are. That pass costs minutes of CPU, which is why it is opt in, and why it switches itself back off each time a song loads. It cannot do anything to a track that has already been separated, so clicking it on an open song was never going to move anything.
The one you actually want is already there. In the top bar, next to the Collapse label, there is a row reading Analysis, Sections, Timeline. "Sections" shows and hides the sections bar, it remembers your choice, and it does not delete anything. That should do exactly what you described wanting, today, on 0.17.2.
On your first suggestion, showing the structure by default and dropping the button: that is the one I cannot take, and it is only because of the CPU cost. Every import would pay for the extra pass whether or not anyone wanted it.
What I have changed is the name, since "Song structure" reads like a switch for the bar. It is "Detect structure" now, and hovering it says it applies to the next import and points at Collapse > Sections for hiding the bar. That is merged and will be in the next release.
One thing I am curious about, if you remember: had you hidden the Sections panel at any point before this, or was the bar showing the whole time? It would tell me whether the Collapse row is findable enough.
I think the collapse row is findable enough. But the reason I went to the Song Structure to collapse the structure is because the UI "drove" me towards it. Had the Song structure button be similar to the look and feel of the split option (vocals, drums bass....etc) which would make is part of that grouping, I would not intuitively click on the prominent structure button to collapse the structure. Presence of the Structure button made me forget about the collapse section.
Activity
Name the structure toggle for the import it changes (#652)

Thanks again for the report.
