[Feature]: Exported Stems have their track name as a prefix #336

Closed

Description

@MetalMan1245

What problem does this solve?

When tracks are currently exported as stems the format is simply "bass, guitar, vocals, etc."

Proposed solution

Stem exports should be labelled "[TrackName]-Bass, [TrackName]-Guitar, [TrackName-Vocals, etc." it makes situations like mine where I use multiple separated tracks as files in a project, and makes file management easier in general.

Done in #340, merged to main as 41bd89d.

Thanks @MetalMan1245 - this was a good catch, and chasing it turned up two more problems you had not hit yet.

What you asked for. Every stem now carries the song name:

    05_Welcome_To_Paradise_Green_Day_Dookie_bass.wav
    05_Welcome_To_Paradise_Green_Day_Dookie_vocals.wav

That covers the zip, single-stem downloads, region trims and the MP3 versions.

One deviation from your request: you asked for [TrackName]-Bass and I used _ with a lowercase stem instead. Only because every other file StemDeck exports already looks like Song_exported_mix.wav, and I would rather not have two conventions. The prefix itself, which is what actually solves your problem, is there. Say the word if the hyphen matters to you and I will reconsider.

Two things I found on the way:

    1. The mix export had the same bug, worse. It downloaded as mixdown.wav for every song, so exporting a few into one folder gave you mixdown.wav, mixdown(1).wav, mixdown(2).wav. That is now <Song>_exported_mix.wav, and <Song>_region.wav for a loop region.

    2. The per-stem download button did not actually download on desktop. It handed the file to your OS instead of saving it, so the stem opened in a browser or media player. On Linux that is probably what you saw. It now opens a proper Save dialog with the prefixed name, like the other exports.

When you can test it: not in alpha 16, which predates all of this. It will be in the next pre-release along with the fix for #335, and I will reply on both when that ships.

@stemdeckapp if you want to catch releases.

Thanks. I don't use X but if you reply please tag me so I can see it when this has a release, this would make using the application significantly easier. I also ran into a proper processing error where half the song just didn't render but I think that might have to do with what you mentioned about the per-stem download button. I did discover that one on my own but seems like it will be fixed in the next update. I haven't gotten around to testing what went wrong so I'll only report it if the issue is reproducible and not just some weird fluke that could just as easily been me only half paying attention to what I was doing (I was running sound at a theater show with a full band so all of your loading screen jokes like "more me in the monitor" were well appreciated).

Alpha 17 is out with this in it: https://github.com/stemdeckapp/stemdeck/releases/tag/v0.8.0-alpha.17

@MetalMan1245 ready for you to test. Linux .tar.gz, same as before.

    What you should see now:

    05_Welcome_To_Paradise_Green_Day_Dookie_bass.wav
    05_Welcome_To_Paradise_Green_Day_Dookie_vocals.wav

Worth checking all four places a file leaves the app, since they were separate code paths:

    1. The stems zip - every member prefixed
    2. A single stem from the download icon in the mixer. On Linux this one previously did not download at all: it handed the file to your OS, so the stem opened in a browser or a media player. You should get a proper Save dialog now.
    3. A loop region export - keeps both the song name and the _region marker
    4. Export Mix - this had the same bug and worse, mixdown.wav for every song. Now <Song>_exported_mix.wav.

On the naming: you asked for [TrackName]-Bass and I used _ with a lowercase stem, only because every other file StemDeck exports already looks like Song_exported_mix.wav and I did not want two conventions in one folder. The prefix itself, which is what solves your problem, is there. If the hyphen genuinely matters for how you sort or script against these, say so and I will revisit it, it is a small change.

Alpha 17 also includes #335, so the stuck export menu is fixed in the same build.

I don't use too much social media in general but this is the theater I work for. I was specifically working the Evening With Andrew Lloyd Webber show while I was doing some of these in the background.
