Summary

Fixes #57

Brings the docs in line with the dashboard, scripts, queue, elasticsearch-api and wordpress-plugin code, and the PRs merged since June 2026.

API

  • Admin API:
    • Use isPublic instead of public.
    • There's no plan requirement or automatic upgrade. You need the owner, admin or developer role and room under the website limit.
    • The example used localhost; it now uses the real endpoint.
    • Added example responses.
  • Export API:
    • Exports default to page views; type selects events or both.
    • Added the query parameter table, all 7 formats including Parquet/Avro column naming, and the missing fields.
    • Deprecated fields only work without version.
    • Public websites can be exported without a key.
  • Stats API: corrected limit and histogram, documented the version fallback and the metadata date and boolean format, and added an errors section (including HTTP 423 for the badge lock).
  • Authenticate: who can create keys, when User-Id is needed, and the 20-failures cooldown. JSONP only works for public websites.
  • Public websites that hide their top pages need an API key for page data (matches dashboard#930).

Script and events

  • Server-side examples used "ua": "User Agent", which counts as a robot because it contains "agent". They now use a valid user agent.
  • Also documented: term and timestamp, and that event names are stored as sent.
  • Event names are case-sensitive and not cut at 200 characters.
  • utm_term is collected.
  • Metadata: sa_metadata is read once at load, sa_pageview(path, metadata) takes metadata, and the collector arguments are corrected.
  • Fixed the light script feature table and sizes.
  • Added a window.sa_settings reference and a bot detection section.
  • Namespaces: sa_pageview keeps its name, and the auto-events script needs data-sa-global (works once scripts#129 is deployed).
  • Data retention, uniques and sessions wording, ignore-metrics side effects, and the session_id wording.

Account and legal

  • Deleting an account: any active member can take over a team, and members of deleted teams keep their accounts. The unused-account removal section stays.
  • Team roles: inviting no longer needs the Team plan. Invites get all websites at first, with steps to limit them. Added a section on adding team members and extra users (linked to the pricing page), plus leaving a team and analyst permissions.
  • Plan changes and cancelling are self-serve. Updated passwords, SSO provider selection, invoices and transfers.
  • Legal pages: the opt-in AI chat is now named as the only exception for analytics data (sent to OpenAI after consent). Fixed Worldserver → Worldstream. Added the /pecr redirect.

Features

  • New pages:
    • /free-plan-badge: the requirement starts November 1, 2026. Links to simpleanalytics.com/badges.
    • /ai-chat
  • Hiding referral spam is now done with view filters.
  • The email report unsubscribe link stops all reports for that address.
  • Fixed the GA4 import dimensions.
  • Certificate checks send one email, not two.
  • Export formats, the "(direct)" filter, and fixes to goals, annotations and mini websites.
  • Plan requirements link to the pricing page instead of naming plans.

Integrations

  • Cloudflare Apps is deprecated; the page now says so and is hidden.
  • WordPress:
    • Logged-in users are excluded by default.
    • Current settings for each tab, requirements and the 1.110 upgrade notes.
    • Troubleshooting, and the "Add Plugin" label.
  • React: corrected the options table. Create-plugin: corrected the defaults and onload. Added the /google-looker-studio redirect.

Screenshots (same widths as before, optimised with pngquant/oxipng or mozjpeg):

  • WordPress: new settings tabs and install steps, captured from WordPress 7.1.3 and plugin 1.113.
  • Dashboard: hide-spam flow, passwords, invoices, email report, annotations settings, advanced robot blocking, metadata in the Events Explorer, and the SSL expiry email.
  • Old images that are no longer used were removed.

Related PRs: dashboard#928 (broken docs links), dashboard#930, scripts#127, scripts#129. The hidden-pages API note and the auto-events namespace step describe behaviour that ships with dashboard#930 and scripts#129.

Security implications

  • No security impact
  • Has security impact - described as:

Testing

  • bundle exec jekyll build succeeds.
  • Every internal link and anchor in the built site resolves, including the new redirects. The only flagged items are pre-existing false positives (a JS template string and relative image paths).
  • git diff --check is clean.
  • Every changed claim was checked against the current code by section, then reviewed again by separate verifiers. Their findings were applied.
  • Each new or changed screenshot was checked visually against the current UI.

Clarify account-deletion retention.

The statement that data is retained only while the account is active conflicts with the documented 90-day retention of database backups and error logs. Clarify immediate removal from service databases and the data that remains afterward.

Suggested fix
-In order to provide its service, Simple Analytics will retain your data in line with your subscription plan and only when your account is active. We won’t store your data longer than necessary. Once you delete your account, you can export your data and [delete the data from our servers](https://docs.simpleanalytics.com/delete-account). The websites and data of teams that are deleted with your account are deleted immediately (but will only be permanently deleted after 90 days).

Correct the blanket statement about UTM privacy.

Line 42 says UTM codes do not include personal data. _docs/10_general/03_how-to-use-url-params.md Line 38 and _docs/10_general/10_what_we_collect.md Lines 164 and 169 explain that utm_term can contain visitors’ search terms and that UTM parameters are stored. This contradiction could lead customers to submit personal data as analytics metadata. State that UTM values can contain personal data and must not include it.

Proposed wording
-The UTM codes are something that the customer adds to the URLs. By nature these UTM codes don't include personal data. They are generic terms like "newsletter_may" or "twitter_campaign_2". [See below][5].
+Customers add UTM codes to URLs. They often contain generic campaign labels, but can also contain personal data. Do not include personal data in UTM codes. [See below][5].

Clarify that Date values are a supported exception.

Line 126 says object values are not allowed. Line 167 documents passing new Date() and says dates are converted to strings. Since a Date is a JavaScript object, clarify that plain objects are rejected and Date values are serialized.

Proposed clarification
-Metadata is a simple key/value object in JavaScript. We don't allow nesting, functions, objects, arrays, empty strings, `null`, and `undefined`. Booleans and the number `0` are allowed.

Preserve tracker initialization order in the namespaced example.

auto-events.js does not queue events when ba_event is unavailable. If a visitor clicks a tracked link before the asynchronous latest.js script sets ba_event_loaded, the event is skipped. Load the namespaced tracker before the asynchronous automated-events script.

Re CodeRabbit review:

  • 15_metrics.md:42 (UTM privacy): applied. The sentence no longer claims UTM codes never contain personal data, and now says not to put personal data in them (consistent with utm_term now being documented as collected).
  • 15_metadata.md:126 (Date values): applied. It now says "plain objects", and dates are listed as allowed, linking to the existing Date section (the script sends Date values JSON-serialized as ISO strings; the queue detects ISO dates in queue/utils/parse.js:157-202).
  • 05_automated-events.md:58-59 (remove async from latest.js): not applied. The default example on the same page (lines 34-35) also loads both scripts with async. The namespaced example uses the same pattern, so recommending a different loading strategy only for namespaces would be inconsistent. The click-before-load race is the same with or without a namespace.
  • 06_data-security-and-ownership.md:29 (retention): not applied. The paragraph already says data "will only be permanently deleted after 90 days", and the linked delete account page lists what we keep (Stripe payment history for taxes, hashes of deleted domains). Repeating that on the legal page adds claims without changing the meaning.

Jekyll build passes; git diff --check clean.

List the non-prefixed UTM aliases.

The linked allow-parameters guide says source, medium, campaign, content, and term are collected by default. This list names only ref as an alias, so readers may think the other aliases are dropped. Include them or clarify that the list is not exhaustive.

From November 1, 2026, websites on the Free plan need to show a Simple Analytics badge. Paid plans don't require a badge. If you'd rather not show it, [upgrade to a paid plan](https://www.simpleanalytics.com/pricing).

Fixed in e4c7e60. Removed the date. It now reads "Websites on the Free plan need to show a Simple Analytics badge." I made the same change in _docs/60_account/10_change-plan.md. grep -rn November _docs now has no results.

- The first check runs 14 days after the first visit to your website. Unfinished and inactive websites aren't checked.
- After that, we check about every 30 days.
- We don't check while your trial is active.
- We look for the badge on the most visited page of your website in the last 30 days. If that page no longer exists, we check your homepage.

Fixed in e4c7e60. I removed the whole "When we check" section, including this sentence, the 14-day and 30-day schedule, and the trial exception. The page now only says "We regularly check if your website shows the badge."

- An image that links to `simpleanalytics.com` with `utm_content=badge` in the link.
- An unchanged copy of the badge that you host yourself, in any image format browsers support (for example SVG, PNG, or WebP).

Keep the badge's link to Simple Analytics intact. Hidden elements, for example with `display: none` or `opacity: 0`, don't count.

## When the badge is missing

If we can't find the badge, we email the owners and admins of your team and show a notice in your dashboard. You then have 14 days to add the badge. After those 14 days, we check again.

"we email the owners and admins of your team" stuff like this is way to complex for normal users. just write "we email you". most free users don't have teams. make sure that we don't write like this in other parts of the docs where teams don't matter a lot.

Fixed in e4c7e60. It now says "we email you", and the "Check badge again" step no longer says an owner or admin has to do it. I also removed team-role requirements from pages where teams rarely matter: change plan, cancel, invoices (now "We always email your invoices to you"), annotations, hide spam, and AI chat. I kept the team wording on pages that are about teams: team roles, SSO, transfer websites, delete account, and the Admin API.

Comment thread _docs/30_features/16_free-plan-badge.md Outdated

After you add the badge, an owner or admin needs to click **Check badge again** in the dashboard notice. We don't check locked websites again automatically. When we find the badge, access returns right away. You can run this check once every 10 minutes.

If your website blocks our scanner (for example with a captcha or a `401`, `403`, or `429` response) or can't be reached, we don't warn you or lock your website because of that check. We try again later.

If the badge is still missing, we lock dashboard data, API access, and exports for that website. API requests return HTTP status `423`. This also affects public dashboards and embedded charts. We keep collecting your page views and events while access is locked.

"You can run this check once every 10 minutes." way too detailed. check if this whole .md file has more like this. users don't need to know how the internals work, just need to know what they need to do.

Fixed in e4c7e60. I removed the 10-minute limit and "We don't check locked websites again automatically". I checked the rest of the file and also removed the check schedule, the trial exception, the page we check, the scanner user agent, the utm_content=badge rule, and the HTTP 423 detail. The Stats and Export API pages still document BADGE_REQUIRED for developers. The page is now 27 lines instead of 42.

- `csv-excel`: CSV with a `sep=,` first line, so Microsoft Excel detects the separator.
- `json`: one JSON object with a `datapoints` array and a `meta` object.
- `ndjson`: one JSON object per line.
- `parquet` and `avro`: typed binary formats for data tools. Column names are converted to camel case and dots become underscores, with exceptions for `_id`, `utm_`, `os_`, and `uuid`. For example, `added_iso` becomes `addedIso`, `session_id` becomes `sessionID`, `utm_source` becomes `uTMsource`, and `metadata.app_id_text` becomes `metadata_appIDText`. Number metadata (`_int`) is exported as a double and date metadata (`_date`) as text.

Why uTMsource and not utmSource? Just asking, no need to change the underlaying code.

It's a side effect of convertToName in dashboard/src/responders/api/export/datapoints.ts:54. It replaces utm_ with UTM and doesn't add a space, so the next word doesn't get capitalized. Then the last step lowercases the first character. Running it locally gives utm_source -> uTMsource, os_name -> oSname, and session_id -> sessionID. That looks unintended, but the docs describe what the export returns today, so I didn't change the docs or the code.

If the new plan has lower limits or fewer features than you use now, the plan page shows what we will delete (for example users, websites, custom views, or goals) before you confirm.

From November 1, 2026, websites on the Free plan need to show the Simple Analytics badge. Paid plans don't require the badge. Read more about the [Free plan badge](/free-plan-badge).

Remove internal check details and future dates from the badge docs, and
drop team-role requirements from pages where most users work alone.

Document the CSP requirement for self-hosted badges.

This line now permits hosting the badge image on the website’s own origin. The CSP instruction below names only simpleanalyticsbadges.com. If a site’s img-src policy does not already allow its own origin, the self-hosted image will be blocked. Tell readers to allow the image’s actual origin, or limit the simpleanalyticsbadges.com instruction to badges served from that host.
