docs: rewrite the Prisma ORM 8 pages whose explanations no longer match rc.9 - #8237
Conversation
Since rc.2 `runtime.execute(plan)` resolves `{ affectedRows }` and rows come
from `runtime.query(plan)`, an `AsyncIterableResult` you await for an array or
iterate with `for await`. The MongoDB client's `db.execute` facade was removed
in the same release, so Mongo plans (reads and writes alike) run through
`(await db.runtime()).query(plan)`. Prepared statements split the same way:
`ps.query(target, params)` for rows, `execute` only for `.affectedCount()`
plans, and `withTransaction`'s `tx` has no `executePrepared`.

rc.7 renamed `.take(n)` and `.skip(n)` on SQL and Mongo ORM collections to `.limit(n)` and `.offset(n)` and removed the old names, including inside relation refinements. MongoDB's lower-level pipeline builder keeps `skip()`, which names the native `$skip` stage, so its three sites are unchanged. 0.17 removed the `sha256:` prefix from every surface (emitted contracts, migration manifests, refs, CLI output, the database marker), and the loaders reject the prefixed form. Dropped it from the JSON samples, the `StorageHashBase` / `ProfileHashBase` brands in the `.d.ts` excerpt, the CLI transcripts, and the `migration ref set` example. 0.17 renamed `extensionPacks` to `extensions` in the config, the TypeScript contract builder, the client options, and the emitted contract's top-level key; the old key fails loudly. Since 0.17 a migration directory holds `migration.ts`, `ops.json` and
`migration.json` only. Contract snapshots are stored once per migrations root
under `migrations/snapshots/<contract hash>/` as `contract.json` and
`contract.d.ts`, and `migration.ts` imports its bookend contracts from there
with `../../snapshots/<hex>/contract.json` (attributed `{ type: 'json' }`) and
`../../snapshots/<hex>/contract` for the types. Replaced the
`start-contract.json` / `end-contract.json` / `*-contract.d.ts` listings and
the `./end-contract` imports.

0.17 removed the `@db.*` attribute channel: PostgreSQL native types are written in type position, so `Uuid` is a built-in type name and the `Uuid = String @db.Uuid` alias no longer parses. The models on the page already write `id Uuid @id @default(uuid())`, so the alias was redundant as well as wrong. The "Named types" example now aliases a real type, `ShortName = VarChar(35)`, and the complete contract uses it on `Post.title`. No other `@db.` form remains on the page. Page: orm/contract-authoring/psl-syntax.mdx (lines 19 and 177). … output
One pass over the flags, error codes, command names and sample transcripts
that no longer match rc.9:
- removed `--skip-skills` and `CLI.INIT_SKILL_INSTALL_FAILED` (both retired in
rc.6, when `orm init` stopped touching skills) from cli/orm-init.mdx,
(index)/index.mdx, (index)/getting-started.mdx and ai/tools/skills.mdx
- `ref set prod @db` / `ref list` become `migration ref set prod <hash>` /
`migration ref list` on orm/migrations/the-migration-graph.mdx: the bare
`ref` group went in rc.5, and `migration ref set` is offline, so `@db`
resolves to an empty sentinel that is not a graph node
- `cd prisma` after the clone becomes `cd orm`
- hint text `prisma-cli migrate` / `prisma-cli migration status` becomes
`prisma db migrate` / `prisma migration status`, since rc.5 renders hints
through the `{bin}` placeholder; deleted the sentences explaining "the
binary's own name for itself"
- `(PN-RUN-3000)` becomes `MIGRATION.RUNNER_FAILED` (0.17 dotted codes)
- `from: null` becomes `from: (baseline)`
- `Applied 1 migration(s) (3 operation(s)) across 1 contract space(s)` becomes
`Applied 3 operation(s) across 1 contract space`
- `npx prisma@latest migrate` becomes `npx prisma@latest db migrate` on
(index)/prisma-orm/create-prisma.mdx; there is no top-level `migrate`
- `contract infer --db` is shown as optional, falling back to `db.connection`
in `prisma.config.ts`

rc.9 stopped imposing enum declaration order on PostgreSQL `ORDER BY` and `DISTINCT ON` for text-backed enums; they sort by their stored value. Only native PostgreSQL enums keep declaration order. - editing-a-migration.mdx: the add_display_name migration imports the wrong snapshot pair; Start is 925198f3 and End is e6b5c284 per the hash narrative on how-migrations-work.mdx:117-123 and applying-a-migration.mdx:32. - sql-query-builder.mdx, orm-client.mdx: drop the Uuid = String @db.Uuid alias from the example schemas; Uuid is a built-in type in type position (packages/2-sql/2-authoring/contract-psl/README.md, examples/prisma-8-demo src/prisma/contract.prisma:27). - writing-data.mdx: the prose said 'Count variants' for methods now named *AndCount. Both `add-to-existing-project` pages told the reader to keep the default
schema path `prisma/contract.prisma`; `orm init` defaults to
`src/prisma/contract.prisma` and writes `db.ts` beside it, so every later
path on the pages was wrong. Also:
- `orm init` writes `prisma-next.md` and installs no agent skills (rc.6),
so the skills sentence is gone from both pages.
- `orm init` asks whether to write `.env` from `.env.example` (default No);
`--write-env` skips the prompt. Both pages now say so before telling the
reader to fill in `DATABASE_URL`, and mention `--schema-path`.
- Both pages show `src/prisma/db.ts` once, with one sentence saying its
`import 'dotenv/config'` is what makes `.env` reach any script that
imports `db`. The scripts no longer pass the URL a second time through
`db.connect({ url })`.
- PostgreSQL page: `db.orm.User` to `db.orm.public.User`, `db.sql.user` to
`db.sql.public.user`, and a note on the infer step that `timestamp` and
`timestamptz` columns map to Temporal-backed types needing
`temporal-polyfill/full/global` (or `TimestamptzString`) or reads fail
with `RUNTIME.TEMPORAL_UNAVAILABLE`.
- MongoDB page: one sentence saying Mongo's `db.runtime()` is async and
Postgres's is not.

…s pages
Since rc.8, `migration plan` with neither `--from` nor a `db` ref refuses
with `MIGRATION.PLAN_ORIGIN_UNKNOWN` whenever migrations already exist on
disk; only an empty `migrations/app/` still plans from empty. Every page
that promised "a full CREATE migration" now says what actually happens and
names the three exits (`migration ref set db <contract>`, `--from <ref>`,
`--from @empty`). The upgrade guide's "look for CREATE TABLE" symptom is
replaced with the error code.
`db init` and `db update` advance the `db` ref only when `--db` is omitted
and the URL comes from `prisma.config.ts`; passing `--db` suppresses that
unless `--advance-ref db` is given too. Stated on db-init, db-update,
migration-ref, and generating-a-migration, and added to the dev-loop
examples that pass `--db`. Deploy and CI examples keep plain `db migrate`,
because it deliberately never moves a repository ref.
`the-migration-graph` loses the "no baseline" limitation. The automatic
baseline (empty graph plus a `db` ref naming a stored snapshot writes a
baseline package and the delta in one run) and the explicit `--from @empty`
retrofit both exist, and a baseline is never replayed against a marked
database. `@empty` is added as the third reserved token, with a note that
the offline commands, `migration ref set` among them, do not accept `@db`.
Leftovers from PR 1 fixed in passing: hyphenated `--name` slugs on
cli/index.mdx and cli/migration-plan.mdx.

Not applied: the audit's claim that `MIGRATION.NO_TARGET` never comes from
`migration plan`. `resolveFromPolicy` calls `findLatestMigration`, which
calls `findLeaf`, which throws it on a cyclic graph, and the monorepo's own
gotchas.md reproduces `migration plan --from db` failing that way after a
rollback. rollbacks-and-recovery.mdx is left as it stands.

…ycles
Since rc.2 there is no `intercept` hook and no generic fallback. Row
queries run `beforeCompile` → `beforeQuery` → `interceptQuery` → `onRow` →
`afterQuery`; non-returning writes run `beforeCompile` → `beforeExecute` →
`interceptExecute` → `afterExecute`. A middleware that wants both paths
registers the same function under both names, which is what `lints` and
`budgets` do. All five pages now say this.
- how-middleware-works: "The five hooks" becomes "The two lifecycles",
with the per-hook sections split across the two paths and the result
fields corrected (`afterQuery` carries `rowCount`; `afterExecute`
carries `stats.affectedRows` and only when `completed`).
- authoring-custom-middleware: the query logger implements `afterQuery`,
modelled on examples/prisma-8-demo/src/prisma/slow-query-warning.ts,
with the `afterExecute` variant shown beside it. The hook table lists
all eight hooks with the lifecycle each belongs to.
- built-in-lints: `unindexedPredicate` is gone; the five keys are
`selectStar`, `noLimit`, `deleteWithoutWhere`, `updateWithoutWhere`,
`readOnlyMutation`. A whole-query raw plan has an AST of kind
`raw-query`: structural rules are skipped and the text heuristics always
run, and `fallbackWhenAstMissing` applies only when `plan.ast` is absent.
- built-in-budgets: `severities.latency` is read, defaulting to `'warn'`
and blocking when `'error'` or in strict mode.
- built-in-cache: the cache implements `interceptQuery`, `onRow`,
`afterQuery`, so the hooks around a hit are `beforeQuery` and
`afterQuery`; a read through `execute()` is neither cached nor returns
rows.
Every "permissive mode" reference on the Postgres pages is gone:
`postgres()` never forwards a `mode`, so a Postgres runtime is always
strict, and only `mongo()` accepts one.

It is not content and was left alone.

Three pages said there was no way to run a standalone raw statement. There is: `db.raw.sql`SELECT ...`.returnsRow(spec).build()` produces a plan for `runtime.query()`, `.affectedCount().build()` produces one for `runtime.execute()`, and a row-returning raw query can be interpolated into another raw template as a subquery or a CTE. `db.raw` is the client's raw lane; the tag is `db.raw.sql`, not `db.raw`. The examples are copied from examples/prisma-8-demo/src/queries/raw-query-demo.ts. Also deleted the "bare-scalar interpolation is broken because the inferer emits unversioned ids" callouts on raw-queries.mdx and sql-query-builder.mdx. `postgresRawCodecInferer` emits versioned ids (`pg/int4@1`, `pg/int8@1`, `pg/text@1`, `pg/bool@1`, `pg/bytea@1`), so a bare value interpolates fine; `param(...)` is for choosing a different codec, not for working around a defect. Checked: typeof globalThis.Temporal is 'undefined' on Node.js 26.8.1, 24.16.0, and 22.22.3, and 'object' on 26.8.2. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
… rewrites left stale
- add-to-existing-project/postgresql.mdx: the note said Temporal ships only
in Node.js 26.8.2 and later. The official nodejs.org builds of 26.0.0,
26.8.0, 26.8.1 and 26.8.2 (linux-x64, run here) all report
typeof Temporal === 'object', the darwin-arm64 26.8.1 and 26.8.2 binaries
are both built with v8_enable_temporal_support and carry temporal_rs, and
the v26.0.0 release notes list "Temporal API enabled by default" while the
26.8.1 and 26.8.2 notes mention no Temporal change. Say "Node.js 26 ships
it" again and give the reader the one-line check so any build without it
is caught before the first read.
- relations-and-joins.mdx: the page now declares `tags Tag[]` and says
`.include("tags")` returns tags, but the relation-predicate sample below
still read the element as a PostTag link (`pt.tagId`). The element is the
Tag (integration test mn-filter.test.ts: `u.tags.some((t) => t.name...)`),
so compare `t.id`.
- sql-query-builder.mdx: the `.returns()` remark pointed at "the grouped-query
warning" for why a raw numeric decodes as a string, but that warning is
now a note saying aggregates decode as numbers. Point at the EXTRACT
example under groupBy, which is where the explanation lives now.

The add-to-existing-project page tells a reader to accept
orm init's default schema path, then builds every later step on that path beingprisma/contract.prisma:So
contract inferwrites a file the config never reads, contract emitemits the untouched starter contract, and thedb.tsimport fails. A reader who follows the page cannot finish it. That is one of eleven places where the Prisma ORM 8 pages explain something that is not how rc.9 behaves. What this PR does
It rewrites the sentences and samples on twelve pages whose explanations are wrong, not just their names. It stacks on #8236, which did the mechanical renames; merge that first and review only the eleven commits after it. Still no new pages, no moved pages, no "Prisma 8" to "Prisma ORM" wording change, and the Prisma 6 and 7 trees are untouched. Where removing a false claim left a gap, the fix adds the one true paragraph that fills it and stops; fuller coverage belongs to the restructure we will discuss separately.
What was wrong, in three kinds
Behaviour that changed after the pages were written.
migration planwith no origin now refuses withMIGRATION.PLAN_ORIGIN_UNKNOWN(rc.8) instead of planning a CREATE-everything migration, anddb init/db updateadvance thedbref only when--dbis omitted. The pages taught the old behaviour and every example passed--db, so a reader's secondmigration planhits the refusal. Dev-loop examples now pass--advance-ref db; the pages say why.beforeQuery/interceptQuery/onRow/afterQueryfor reads,beforeExecute/interceptExecute/afterExecutefor writes). The pages described five hooks including aninterceptthat does not exist, and the flagship query-logger example only implemented the write hook, so it never logged the read it claimed to log. Also: the lints options had a sixth key that is not accepted, budgets latency was described as unread, and "permissive mode" was described on Postgres, where the client never forwards a mode.countBigInt/sumBigInt/avgDecimalbeside them. The pages said they return strings and told readers to callNumber().Supported things the pages called unsupported.
db.raw.sql\...`.returnsRow(spec)/.affectedCount()`) has shipped since rc.2; the raw-queries page said it did not exist.includeand nested writes through a junction,onDelete/onUpdate, and.variant()discriminator injection all work. The relations and data-modeling pages said they did not and sent readers to the SQL builder.Samples that fail.
orm initno longer installs skills,.envis a prompt, and inferredTimestamptzcolumns need the Temporal polyfill before the first read.rawCodecInferer, so it did not typecheck.conflictOn, so it targeted the primary key and inserted a duplicate.db.prepare()thendb.connect()sample threwDRIVER.ALREADY_CONNECTED; closed and double-connect failures are structured codes, shown as plainErrorstrings.Jsonb,Decimal, andBytes; the extensions page's generic recipe does not work for Supabase and its catalog links led to READMEs with a private install command. How it was verified
Each commit cites the prisma/orm source lines it was checked against. While implementing, the source overruled two of our own findings, and the pages were left as they were in both cases:
migration plancan raiseMIGRATION.NO_TARGETafter a rollback cycle (the planner does resolve a leaf), andmin/maxover aDateTimecolumn does type-check at rc.9. An independent review pass over the eleven commits found seven problems, four of them introduced by the rewrite (a--fromgrammar that listed tokens the offline command rejects, aJsonfiltering claim that only holds forJsonb, a rawEXTRACTsample shown decoding to a number when raw projections are not decoded, and a codec id that does not exist); all seven are fixed in the last commit, which cites the source for each. How to review
One commit per page or page group. Read each page's changed section in full rather than the hunk alone; several fixes remove a claim in one paragraph and adjust a later paragraph that repeated it.
