Prisma 8 schemas can now include raw SQL and JSON as tagged literals, for example @default(sql`gen_random_uuid()`) and @default(json'{"plan": "free"}'). This PR highlights the bodies of those literals with VS Code's built-in SQL and JSON grammars. It also highlights '…' and bare backtick strings as strings; until now the grammar coloured them as identifiers.

Changes

  • Grammar (packages/vscode/syntaxes/prisma.tmLanguage.json):
    • #tagged_literal is the first rule in #value. A tag is one identifier, or two joined by a dot (an extension prefix), followed by a fence on the same line. The last segment of the tag decides the embedded language:
      • sql and <prefix>.sql get SQL in all three fences.
      • json, jsonb, <prefix>.json and <prefix>.jsonb get JSON in backtick and '…' fences.
      • Any other tag, and json"…", gets a coloured tag (entity.name.function.tagged-template.prisma) and a plain string body.
    • #literal gains single_quoted_string and backtick_string rules. A backtick string has two escapes, \` and \\, as in PSL.
    • Inside a backtick SQL body, three SQL forms have their own rules ahead of the SQL grammar so they end before the closing backtick: a -- comment, dollar-quoted strings ($$…$$, $tag$…$tag$) and E'…' strings with backslash escapes. Without them, valid bodies such as sql`now() -- note` kept the literal open past its closing backtick.
  • "…" strings: a backslash now escapes the next character, so "a\"b" is one string and json"{\"plan\": \"free\"}" no longer ends @default( early. Unterminated strings now end at the end of their line, as the parser treats them, instead of colouring every following line as a string until the next " in the file. A ( left open by the same typo still colours the following lines as attribute arguments until a ), since attribute arguments may span lines.
  • Comments in attribute arguments: // comments inside multi-line attribute arguments, arrays and function arguments are now tokenised as comments. Before, they were tokenised as values, so an unpaired backtick or quote in one could start a string.
  • Embedded languages (packages/vscode/package.json): embeddedLanguages maps meta.embedded.block.sql and meta.embedded.block.json to sql and json. This also turns on comment toggling and bracket matching inside the bodies.
  • Grammar tests (packages/vscode/tests/grammar/): vitest tests tokenise schemas with vscode-textmate and vscode-oniguruma, the tokeniser and regex engine VS Code uses, and load the SQL and JSON grammars from tm-grammars.
    • packages/vscode now has a test script, so root pnpm test runs these tests.
    • vitest.config.mts limits the run to tests/grammar/, so the mocha integration tests are not picked up.
    • The tests cover every tag family in every fence, multi-line bodies, escapes, malformed quote-fenced bodies, positions inside arrays, named arguments and datasource assignments, and regression checks for existing syntax.

Why

  • Two rule shapes. A backtick fence uses a plain begin/end region, the same shape JavaScript tagged-template extensions such as es6-string-html and styled-components use. This colours valid multi-line bodies correctly on every line, including the closing line.
    • Trade-off: a malformed or unfinished backtick body can colour the rest of the file until it is fixed, which those extensions accept too.
    • A quote fence always ends on its own line, so it uses a single match with the body as an isolated capture. Anything the embedded grammar opens inside the body ends at the closing quote.
  • Language from the last tag segment. prisma-next registers only sql and json today, and a prefix is an extension namespace. Choosing the language from the last segment is this grammar's convention for extension tags such as myext.sql; it covers them without a grammar release.
  • json"…" is not injected. Every JSON quote in it is written \", which the JSON grammar would read as a string delimiter.
  • Tests run the real grammars. They use VS Code's own tokeniser and grammars because what an embedded grammar does inside a body only shows up with real grammars.

Notes for review:

  • Lockfile churn. The pnpm-lock.yaml diff is larger than the three new dev dependencies alone would produce. The rest is pnpm re-resolving peer dependencies (supports-color peer suffixes, libc fields, two deduplicated versions). A clean pnpm install --lockfile-only from main with the new package.json produces the same changes. No direct dependency changed version.
  • prisma-next semantic tokens. For Prisma 8 files the prisma-next language server provides semantic tokens, which take precedence over these TextMate scopes. It currently emits nothing for tagged literals. If it ever emits a token over a literal's body, the SQL and JSON highlighting will no longer show.

Adds a vitest harness under packages/vscode/tests/grammar that
tokenises schemas with vscode-textmate + vscode-oniguruma, loading
the sql and json grammars from tm-grammars, and restricts vitest's
include glob so the mocha integration test isn't picked up.

Adds single_quoted_string and backtick_string rules to
prisma.tmLanguage.json (with a shared backtick_escape rule), included
from #literal next to the existing double_quoted_string rule.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds tagged_literal rules to prisma.tmLanguage.json: a backtick
begin/end region injecting source.sql / source.json for tags ending
in sql / json(b), a single-line quoted match that isolates and
injects the body the same way, and a fallback that colours the tag
and leaves the body to the existing plain string rules for unknown
tags, json"...", and a tag/fence split across lines. #tagged_literal
is included first in #value, before #array, #functional and
#literal.

Registers embeddedLanguages for meta.embedded.block.sql/json on the
source.prisma grammar contribution, and adds
tests/grammar/tagged-literals.test.ts covering every tag family
across every fence, multi-line SQL/JSON bodies, fence escapes,
split tag/fence, bare backtick strings, array/named-argument/
assignment positions, malformed quote-fenced bodies where the
embedded grammar opens a region that never closes inside the body,
and regression checks against existing Prisma value tokenisation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Improved Prisma syntax highlighting for embedded SQL and JSON in tagged literals.
    • Added highlighting for single-quoted and backtick strings, including escaped characters and multiline content.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved recognition of tags, string boundaries, and surrounding schema fields in supported literals.
    • Added recognition of inline comments within attributes, arrays, and functional expressions.

Walkthrough

The VS Code Prisma grammar now recognizes single-quoted and backtick strings, and tagged SQL and JSON literals with embedded language scopes. The package maps those scopes to SQL and JSON. The package also adds Vitest configuration, TextMate and Oniguruma tokenization helpers, and tests for string and tagged-literal highlighting.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2c56a

Typing an unfinished dollar-quoted SQL string inside a tagged backtick literal can temporarily mis-highlight the schema that follows. Schema parsing and execution are not affected, so this is safe to merge with a follow-up.

Adds expectHighlighting(annotated) to tests/grammar/tokenize.ts: it
strips <sql>/<json> markers from an annotated schema, tokenises the
result, walks the tokens to re-render the markers around runs of
meta.embedded.block.sql/json (spanning lines where a run does), and
asserts the rendered string equals the input.

Rewrites tests/grammar/tagged-literals.test.ts to assert through this
helper: one schema per tag family x fence combination, multi-line SQL
and JSON bodies, fence escapes, the three malformed quote-fenced
bodies, a tag and fence split across lines, a bare backtick string,
an array, a named argument, a datasource assignment, and a
regression schema with no injected markers. A small set of ordinary
scope assertions covers what the markers do not show: the tag scope,
the fence punctuation scopes, a non-injected body's plain string
scope, and an escape token's scope.

Removes isEmbedded, isNotEmbedded, plainStringScope and defaultSchema,
which nothing uses any more. tests/grammar/strings.test.ts is
unchanged.

An unclosed "..." string used to colour every following line as a string
until the next quote in the file, which then left every later string with
its quotes out of step. It now ends at the end of its line, as the Prisma
parser treats it and as the single-quoted string rule already does.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A line comment opened by -- inside tagged_literal_sql_backtick's
injected SQL previously kept matching through the closing backtick,
because the SQL grammar's own comment rule ends only at the end of
the line, so the backtick fence's end pattern was never tried while
the comment region was open. Adds a rule, tried before the SQL
grammar, that matches the comment up to but not including the next
unescaped backtick, so the fence closes normally on both a
single-line body and the closing line of a multi-line body.

A # comment does not trigger this, because the SQL grammar in use
does not treat # as a comment opener.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
double_quoted_string had no escape rule, so the first \" ended the
string instead of being treated as an escaped quote, unlike the
single-quoted and backtick string rules. A JSON value written with
escaped quotes, such as a json"..." tagged literal body, was coloured
as plain identifiers between spurious string regions, and a closing
paren inside such a value could end the enclosing attribute and the
model block early.

Adds a \\. escape rule, matched before the content rule, and removes
the backslash from the content rule's character class so it no
longer claims an escape's backslash first. $-interpolation and the
end-of-line fallback for an unterminated string are unaffected.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The SQL grammar has no rule for PostgreSQL's dollar-quoted strings
($$...$$ and the tagged $tag$...$tag$ form) or for E'...' strings with
backslash escapes, so either form opens a plain '...' string region
that has no closing quote on the line, which then reads through the
backtick fence's own closing backtick the same way an unclosed SQL
comment does.

Adds two rules, tried before the SQL grammar, so both forms are
matched as complete strings and the fence closes normally. The E
prefix is matched case-insensitively, and a doubled quote ('') is
accepted alongside a backslash escape, both valid in this form.

The quote-fenced SQL rule is left as is: its body is an isolated
match capture, so neither form can carry a region past the closing
quote there, and nothing in these findings needs it changed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
attribute_with_arguments, array and functional did not include the
comment rules, so a // comment on its own line inside open arguments
was tokenised as values. That only miscoloured the comment text until
the new backtick string rule gave a single unpaired backtick inside
such a comment the ability to open a string that runs to the next
backtick in the file, or to the end of it.

Includes the existing single-line double_comment_inline rule in all
three, before the value rules, so the comment is matched first and
nothing inside it, including a backtick, is seen by the value rules.
A // cannot start a value and strings are their own regions, so this
does not change how any string, including one containing "//", is
tokenised.

PSL gives a backtick string exactly two escapes, \` and \; every
other backslash sequence, including \$, is kept as written. \${ is
also written as it is, since PSL has no interpolation.

backtick_escape now matches only \` and \\. A \$ sequence in a SQL
or JSON body reaches the embedded grammar like any other text. The
dollar-quoted string rule added earlier for $$...$$ and $tag$...$tag$
is unaffected: it matches on a literal $ character, and a backslash
in front of one is no longer claimed first by backtick_escape, so a
body containing \$ or ${ next to a dollar-quoted string still closes
that string correctly.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
PSL's qualified name for a tag is one identifier, or two joined by
one dot, such as postgis.geometry. The three tag patterns previously
accepted any number of dot-joined segments; each now accepts at most
one prefix segment before the identifier that decides the language.

A tag with two or more dots before its last segment, such as
a.b.sql, is not a qualified name the grammar's single-prefix rule
covers. The grammar reads it the same way it reads any other text
that happens to end in a recognised shape: the leading segments are
plain identifiers, and the trailing prefix.identifier pair, here
b.sql, is matched as a tag on its own.

Updates the tests to use tags the current syntax actually accepts:
the unprefixed sql, json and jsonb, an extension-prefixed form
(myext.sql, myext.json), and postgis.geometry as the non-SQL,
non-JSON extension tag that never injects a language. Adds a test
for the two-or-more-dot case above.
