ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The PR changes the default readiness timing for all SSH connection and tunnel-reuse flows, including increasing the reuse wait from 2 seconds to 20 seconds. Although the fix is localized and regression-tested, this product-default change warrants human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Good catch — the shared constant also fed the remote-side reuse/launch scripts' own probe loop, which (unlike the Effect-based path) doesn't interrupt an in-flight request when its own deadline passes, so one slow attempt bounded by the new 8s could blow through the 2s reuse-check budget. Split it into two constants: |

Remove the duplicate Deferred import.
Line 7 redeclares the Deferred binding that Line 5 already imports. TypeScript rejects the duplicate identifier, so this test module cannot compile.

Each readiness probe crosses the real SSH tunnel (desktop -> remote), so its 1000ms deadline left no room for links with RTT above roughly that, e.g. satellite or in-flight wifi. Every attempt failed on the per-request timeout before a response could arrive, and the connection never succeeded even though the tunnel and remote server were healthy. Raise the probe deadline to 8s so a slow link only makes connecting slower, not impossible, while leaving the overall 20s connect budget alone. Fixes pingdotgg#7733
…s deadline Macroscope caught a real regression in the first pass: raising the shared SSH_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS to 8s also fed the remote-side reuse/launch scripts' own loopback probe. That script's deadline loop only checks its overall timeout *between* attempts, so one in-flight probe bounded by 8s could blow through the reuse check's 2s budget by several seconds — a real regression the previous version didn't account for. Split it: SSH_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS stays 1s for the remote script (always loopback, no RTT to account for, and must stay under REMOTE_REUSE_READY_TIMEOUT_MS), and a new SSH_TUNNEL_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS (8s) applies only to the desktop-side probe that actually crosses the SSH link at initial connect. That path uses Effect's own timeoutOption, which genuinely interrupts an in-flight request at its outer deadline, so it can't overshoot a short timeoutMs elsewhere the way the remote script's loop can.

The 8-second per-probe inside the existing 20-second budget is the right shape for the initial connect, and the TestClock-based tests are good. One change needed:
The tunnel-reuse path also raises the overall budget from 2s to 20s. A stale tunnel (dead listener after sleep or a network change) returns ECONNREFUSED immediately, so the reuse check now spins for a full 20 seconds before recreating the tunnel, where today it recovers in 2. Cap the reuse overall at one slow probe (SSH_TUNNEL_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS, 8s) rather than the full connect budget, and add a test case with an immediately-refused probe that asserts recreation happens within that window.

Fixes #7733.
A healthy SSH environment cannot connect when its HTTP round trip exceeds the one-second readiness probe. Rechecking an existing tunnel has the same problem and can stop a healthy managed server.
Use an eight-second probe inside the existing twenty-second readiness budget for both initial connection and tunnel reuse. Remote-side loopback probes remain at one second, inside their existing two-second reuse budget.
The regression tests exercise the environment manager with 1.5-second and six-second responses. Each case connects twice and verifies that only one tunnel starts and neither the tunnel nor the remote server is stopped.
Verification
Baseline 5a433244, September 4, 2026: a focused production-helper test expecting a successful 1.5-second response fails because the default probe expires at one second.
After the fix:
The tests use controlled HTTP and child-process dependencies and the Effect test clock. No physical high-latency link was used. Screenshots do not apply to this timeout-only change.
Remaining gates
Current-head CI passed after the fork workflows were approved. Preview and native-only jobs were skipped. Macroscope's correctness check passed, but its approvability check remains neutral and requests human review because the default tunnel-reuse budget changes from two seconds to twenty seconds. The timing decision is the remaining approval gate; leave this PR unmerged pending human review.
