feat(web): F6 moves between workspace areas, and the sidebar is keyboard navigable - #25877
Keyboard and screen reader users have no quick way to move between the sidebar, conversation, composer, and panels. They must tab through every control. Also, the web thread menu leaves focus on the row behind it.
This takes over #19669 by @thienautran and ports it onto current main. Settings and Usage are now modals, the sidebar was split into files, and the palette state now lives in a store. Credit goes to the original author through a Co-authored-by trailer.
Scope and approval
A maintainer (@t3dotgg) asked for this takeover of #19669, which was closed only because it lacked maintainer approval. The maintainer also asked to fold in the queued-message scrolling fix below. The original author reported that bug while testing this work.
What you get
Keys
Result
Standard
F6 / Shift+F6
Move between the sidebar, conversation, composer, thread details, terminal, and right panel. The last focused control in each area comes back. In Settings, these keys move between the section list and the open section.
Windows, VS Code, Chrome, Claude docs
mod+F6 / mod+Shift+F6
The same, for browsers that keep plain F6 for their toolbar.
Slack, Claude docs
Up / Down, Home / End, Right / Left
Move through sidebar rows or Settings sections without opening them; expand or collapse groups. The tree has one Tab stop.
WAI-ARIA treeview
Tab
From the focused thread, reach that thread's own buttons.
F2
Rename the focused thread.
Windows, VS Code
Shift+F10 / Context Menu key
Open the focused thread's menu. A menu opened from the keyboard starts on its first action. Tab closes it.
Usage gets no areas, and Settings does not move focus to search on open. Main gives the modal itself focus on open.
When the sidebar opens, it does not take focus. On desktop it announces that it is shown or hidden through a polite live region, and F6 can reach it.
When the window gets focus again, the composer gets focus back unless a region, a tree row, a menu, or a listbox has focus. The PR kept focus on any control in an area, which would change this behavior for every user.
Space now activates a menu item on all platforms. This fixes the CodeRabbit finding.
The jsdom tests became browser tests, because the repo has no jsdom.
feat: improve screen reader keyboard navigation #19669's Accessible mode setting (Auto / On / Off) is dropped. It only toggled a few spoken hints that repeat what screen readers already announce. Capabilities like this can come back as extensions.
After council review: the nonstandard mod+Alt+] / mod+Alt+[ defaults became mod+F6 / mod+Shift+F6. F2 renames instead of entering a row-actions mode. A pending focus request stops after 2 s. F6 never scrolls the conversation, so live follow keeps running.
Also fixed: editing a queued message breaks scrolling
The author of #19669 reported this. After Edit loads a queued message into the composer, the whole chat column scrolls out of place. The composer ends up mid-screen with blank space below it, and the timeline no longer scrolls normally.
Cause: the queue's sr-only live region is position: absolute, and its nearest positioned ancestor is outside the timeline scroller. So the scroller does not clip it, and it makes the chat column taller than its box. The column is overflow-x-hidden, which also makes it scroll vertically. Focusing the composer for the edit then scrolls the column. The fix makes the queue section relative, so the live region stays inside the scroller.
Proof: in a real build with a running turn, a long queued message, and real wheel input, the chat column overflowed by 469px before the fix and by 0px after. During the edit the composer stays at the bottom, and only the timeline scrolls. A new QueuedRunsControl browser test fails without the fix (column scrollHeight 1000 instead of 200).
Before / after
Before: when the menu opens, focus stays on the thread behind it (image from #19669).
After: Shift+F10 opens the menu with its first action focused.
Proof
I tested a real dev build in the browser panel with real keys. F6 went composer → thread details → sidebar → conversation. Shift+F6 went back one area. Shift+F10 opened the menu, and Escape returned to the row. In the Settings modal, F6 cycled between sections and content, and arrows moved focus without navigating.
vp run check:changed passes. The new browser tests pass: workspaceFocus, sidebarTree, and contextMenuFallback.keyboard. 30 related browser test files also pass.

The pull request adds workspace-area focus navigation and restoration, keyboard navigation for sidebar trees and fallback context menus, and accessibility updates across the web and desktop applications. It also updates keyboard-focus documentation and the queued-run layout.
The new controller tracks focus by workspace area or panel surface, navigates visible areas, restores focus, and retries deferred focus requests. App startup initializes the controller, and browser tests cover navigation and restoration.
F6 commands and palette actions move focus between workspace areas. Palette state records the opener, URL, and focus-request version to guide focus restoration when the palette closes. Desktop forwarding focuses the host web contents before dispatching workspace-focus commands.
Workspace regions and focus targets are added across chat, sidebar, settings, Pull Requests, terminal, and panel surfaces. Panel and route actions request focus. The keyboard-focus guide describes the related shortcuts and navigation behavior.
Settings sections become tree items. The navigation hook assigns the Tab stop and handles bounded ArrowUp, ArrowDown, Home, and End navigation.
Sidebar tree navigation apps/web/src/lib/sidebarTree.ts, apps/web/src/lib/sidebarTree.browser.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/LegacySidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/sidebar/*
Sidebar rows and groups receive tree metadata and keyboard navigation. The tree utility manages focus, hierarchy, expansion, context-menu invocation, and row-action tab order. Thread rows also support F2 renaming when the stated conditions are met.
The fallback context menu supports keyboard navigation and configurable focus restoration. Desktop sidebar visibility changes trigger live-region announcements, and the mobile sheet title can use the sidebar’s accessible label.

Takes over #19669 by @thienautran onto current main.
- F6 / Shift+F6 (and mod+Alt+] / mod+Alt+[) move between the sidebar,
conversation, composer, thread details, terminal, and right panel, and
restore the last focused control in each area. Inside the Settings modal
they move between the section list and the open section.
- The thread sidebar and Settings sections are trees with one Tab stop,
arrow navigation, F2 for row actions, and Shift+F10 for the row menu.
- The web context menu takes focus and supports arrows, Home/End,
submenus, Enter/Space, and Escape.
- Accessible mode (Auto / On / Off) adds screen reader navigation hints;
Auto follows Electron screen reader detection.

The queue's sr-only live region is absolutely positioned, and its nearest
positioned ancestor sat outside the timeline scroller. It escaped the
scroller's clipping and made the overflow-x-hidden chat column scrollable,
so focusing the composer for an edit scrolled the column out of place.

- One focus controller for the app's lifetime, so a keybinding update keeps
each area's remembered focus.
- Sidebar visibility uses polite live regions and is announced only on
desktop; the mobile sheet is a dialog that announces itself.
- Row actions leave the Tab order once focus leaves them, unless focus is in
their menu.
- A keyboard-opened project menu no longer swallows the next Right/Left.

…n an action
- Area keys are F6/Shift+F6 with mod+F6/mod+Shift+F6 for browsers that keep F6;
the nonstandard mod+Alt+]/[ defaults are gone.
- F2 renames the focused thread. The F2 row-actions mode is gone; Tab reaches the
focused row's own buttons instead.
- A rendered row under a collapsed group stays reachable (the open thread in a
collapsed shelf), and refresh skips unchanged attribute writes.
- Keyboard-opened menus start on their first action; Tab closes the menu.
- Pending focus requests stop after 2s; window return only keeps keyboard focus.

The setting only toggled a few aria-description hints, which repeat what
screen readers already announce for trees and regions. Removing it drops the
client setting, the Electron screen reader detection IPC, the palette items,

F6 registers with the shell's shortcut dispatcher, and the focus controller starts
with the app like the other start* services. A store subscription moves focus
into a panel the user opens, and a route subscription moves it into Pull Requests.
One focusout safety net replaces the per-component recovery hooks: focus that
drops to the body returns to the same control when React remounted it, else to
its area, else to the main content.

The last two commits drop Accessible mode (51f71009e8) and move workspace focus out of React effects into an app service (c838fd6015). Please review apps/web/src/lib/workspaceFocus.ts in particular: the focusout recovery, the pending request queue, and the panel and route subscriptions.

A stale suppression flag swallows the next keyboard ArrowRight or ArrowLeft after a mouse right-click.
isTrusted fixes the keyboard-opened menu. A trusted right-click still sets suppressProjectClickForContextMenuRef.current to true. On Windows and Linux, a right-click fires no click event, so nothing clears the flag. Only handleProjectButtonPointerDownCapture clears it, and it runs on pointer input only.
sidebarTree.ts handles ArrowRight and ArrowLeft by calling row.click(). That click is synthetic and keyboard-originated. The click runs handleProjectButtonClick, which consumes the stale flag and returns before it toggles projectExpanded. The first Arrow press after a right-click on a project row therefore does nothing.
Enter and Space use handleProjectButtonKeyDown and are not affected.
Fix this in handleProjectButtonClick (Line 1423). A keyboard-originated click has event.detail === 0. The macOS Ctrl+click follow-up click has detail >= 1. Honor the suppression flag only for pointer clicks:
Suggested change in `handleProjectButtonClick`

Add a visible focus indicator to the Settings content area.
The container receives outline-none and has tabIndex={-1} from workspaceAreaProps. focusArea falls back to the area element when it has no focusable child. This happens, for example, when SettingsScopeBoundary shows only a text message. In that case keyboard focus is on the container, and no indicator is visible. ChatView.tsx already uses a focus-visible ring on its conversation area for the same case.
Based on learnings: flag outline: none when no visible focus indicator remains for keyboard users.
