Problem

A terminal close confirmation can stop a different thread's terminal and delete its history. Terminal IDs such as term-1 are reused across threads.

Open terminals in A and B. Visit B, then A. Close A's terminal tab, use browser Back while its confirmation is open, and confirm from B. Local cleanup still belongs to A, but the stable terminal callback uses B's latest thread reference. B loses its terminal while A's process keeps running.

Change

Pass the captured scoped thread reference through terminal close operations. The permission check, close RPC, and exit fallback use that same destination, even after another thread or environment becomes active.

The panel tab close passes its original reference. The terminal toolbar also passes the reference captured before confirmation through its retained callback. Panel cleanup finds the terminal's surface in the destination thread's current store, so a newer selected panel cannot redirect cleanup. The drawer uses the same explicit destination for its session and local state. Stable callback identities stay unchanged.

Scope and approval

This is a focused repair for an obvious wrong-destination destructive action under the small-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. There is no issue or maintainer approval claimed for this finding. Confirmation defaults, wording, terminal ID allocation, and the server protocol stay the same.

The change covers the shared web renderer used by desktop. Mobile has separate terminal controls and is untouched.

Verification

The Chromium regression defers a confirmation, rerenders the actual hooks for another environment and thread with the same terminal ID, then resolves it. Both successful close and the exit fallback fail on the base and pass with the fix. Cancel and revoked access preserve both sessions. The four cases pass on the final source tree.

pnpm exec vp test run src/hooks/useRightPanelSurfaceClose.browser.test.tsx --project browser

Formatting, lint, typecheck, and production builds pass. The base has two regression failures and two passing guard cases; the candidate passes all four.

Real-app verification used Chrome 154 on Linux, production web bundles, a production server on macOS, and separate state for each build. Two real PTYs ran counters in term-1, without a provider session. After confirming A's close from B, the base has A running and B missing. The candidate has A missing and B still running. Repeating the candidate flow with the terminal toolbar's close button also leaves B running and closes A.

Not checked: native desktop shell integration, other browsers, Windows, or mobile. The fallback failure and permission changes were checked in the deterministic browser regression, rather than forced in the real server.

Before: confirming A's close after navigating to B removes B's terminal panel.

Before: B loses its terminal

After: the same steps close A and leave B's terminal and counter running.

After: B keeps its terminal

Prior PRs: #20289 by Julius Marminge introduced the shared terminal actions hook used here. #8421 by Adolanium addressed the close fallback and was closed because that fallback already existed on main; this fix preserves it. #16615 by Jake Leventhal changes confirmation preferences and bulk close, which are separate from this wrong-thread repair.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 18ab528

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This focused web bug fix binds terminal close RPCs, fallback writes, and local cleanup to the thread captured when confirmation began, preventing a delayed confirmation from closing another thread's terminal. Existing close paths remain behaviorally equivalent, and a targeted browser regression test covers the affected flows.

Walkthrough

Terminal close requests now carry a thread reference through confirmation and closure. Permission checks, session closure, and terminal panel updates use the target thread. Browser tests cover thread changes, close fallback, cancellation, and scope revocation.

Changes: Thread-scoped terminal closure

Layer / File(s) Summary
Carry thread context through close requests
apps/web/src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/PersistentThreadTerminals.tsx, apps/web/src/hooks/useRightPanelSurfaceClose.ts, apps/web/src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.browser.test.tsx
Close callbacks accept an optional thread reference. Terminal exit, confirmation, and surface-resource release pass the relevant reference to terminal closure. A browser test checks that a deferred close retains the original thread reference.
Close terminals in the target thread
apps/web/src/components/terminal/useThreadTerminalActions.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/useChatTerminalActions.ts, apps/web/src/hooks/useRightPanelSurfaceClose.browser.test.tsx
Terminal closure checks the target thread’s operate scope and uses its environment and thread IDs. Terminal and panel state updates apply to that thread. Tests cover thread changes, successful and fallback closes, cancellation, and revoked scope.

Pass the captured thread reference on session-exit closes.

onSessionExited runs asynchronously. TerminalSplitPanes passes threadRef to TerminalViewport, but omits it when closing the terminal. The parent close callback defaults to its current thread, so a reused terminal ID can close the wrong session after navigation.

...
-                onSessionExited={() => onCloseTerminal(terminalId)}
+                onSessionExited={() => onCloseTerminal(terminalId, threadRef)}

A terminal's exit close runs on a later task, after the drawer may have
moved to another thread. The split panes dropped the thread they captured,
so the panel close fell back to the active thread and could close a
reused terminal ID there. Pass the captured thread through.

Reset shared mock state through setup().

Move these resets into a setup() function and call it at the start of the test. The browser-test rule says: “Shared mock state that vi.mock factories read is reset by a setup() call at the top of the test.” As per coding guidelines, this test must use that setup pattern.

thanks @only21mil. your captured destination fixes the wrong-thread close and preserves the same destination for the permission check, close rpc, and exit fallback.

i updated this branch directly and kept all contributor commits. merged current main (071239804e), preserved its focus behavior, and removed the redundant destination-aware callback from the persistent drawer because main keys each drawer by thread. the shared panel callback still takes the captured thread and finds its terminal in that thread's current store. the drawer test now uses setup() and no longer passes main's removed focusRequestId prop.

verification at 9947d4a520:

  • blacksmith vp run check:changed: format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and 8 scoped tests passed.
  • on current main, 3 regressions fail for the expected destination mismatch and the 2 cancel/revoked guards pass. all 5 browser regressions pass on this branch.
  • real chrome, actual client rpc and two real ptys using term-1: close a, browser back to b while confirmation stays open, confirm. main kills b and leaves a running. this branch kills a and keeps b running. repeated successfully with the terminal toolbar's close button.
  • real-app panel and drawer cancel preserve their sessions; ordinary drawer close removes only its own terminal and leaves the panel terminal running.
  • all 28 ci checks are green. coderabbit reported no actionable comments. two independent reviewers found no issues at the current head.
  • uploaded screenshots inspected at full size; trimmed recordings inspected, played to completion, and seeked in chrome.

unverified: native desktop shell, mobile, other browsers and windows. fallback failures and revoked permissions are covered by deterministic browser regressions rather than forced on the real server. web and desktop share this renderer; the server protocol and provider adapters are unchanged. gitcafe currently renders these external media embeds as links; the uploaded files were opened and verified directly.

before, b loses its terminal after confirming a's close:

before: b's terminal is incorrectly closed

after, b keeps its running counter and a's process has exited:

after: b's terminal keeps running

before: confirming a's close from b kills b

after: confirming a's close from b closes a
