fix(server): agents keep named browser profiles after a server restart - #23484
Web and desktop clients report their browser profiles to the server, which kept them only in memory. After a restart, until one of those clients reconnects, agents see only Default and Incognito. preview_open with profileId: "Work" fails with No browser profile is named "Work", and an open with no profile gets throwaway storage, though Work's storage is still on disk. Mobile clients don't report profiles, so phone-only use and scheduled tasks hit this after every restart. Fixes#19805.
Change
ServerBrowser saves the catalog it resolves from a report (user profiles and the default id) to userdata/server-browser/reported-profiles.json and loads it at startup.
Encoding and decoding use the PreviewReportProfilesInput schema. A missing or invalid file falls back to the built-in profiles, as before.
Writes use writeFileStringAtomically, as serverSettings.ts does, and happen only when the catalog changes, so a client re-reporting on connect writes nothing.
A one-permit Semaphore keeps memory and disk in report order. A failed write logs a warning.
How reports combine is unchanged. The server saves whatever catalog it holds, so this works with either outcome of #19279.
Scope and approval
#19805 reports the bug. On 2026-10-22 @juliusmarminge added needs more info, then removed it after @JustYanniccreplied that the web-client steps were invalid and corrected the issue. The corrected issue asks for a desktop setup that reports a named profile, then raw preview_status and preview_open before and after a restart, with the second calls made before any client reconnects. The real-app run below does that on a production desktop build.
This PR relies on the CONTRIBUTING exception for a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug. Reported profiles stop resolving after a restart while their storage is still on disk. The fix has one cause and changes one server file and its test, with no contract, client, setting or default change.
Verification
New test in ServerBrowser.test.ts: "an agent opens a reported profile after a restart, before any client reports again". One ServerBrowser takes a report of Work, a second one starts over the same state directory with no report, and an agent opens profileId: "Work".
main (bd6940b): fails with No browser profile is named "Work". Use one of: Default (id default), Incognito (id incognito).
This branch: ServerBrowser.test.ts and ServerBrowserStream.test.ts, 34 passed.
vp lint and vp fmt --check on both files: clean. pnpm run typecheck in apps/server: exit 0.
Real app on Linux x64: production builds (build:desktop) of main and this branch, isolated state, and the repo's mock ACP agent calling through t3 acp-mcp-call. On each build:
In the desktop app, Settings > Integrations > Add profile > Blank profile twice, renamed to Work and Personal.
t3 thread start with the mock agent, then preview_status and preview_open {profileId: "Work"}.
Quit the desktop app, which stops its server. Start t3 start over the same T3 home, with no client.
t3 thread start again, then the same calls.
The desktop app after step 1 (identical on both builds):
main: after the restart the agent sees only Default and Incognito, Work is unknown, and an open with no profile gets a tab with no profile.
This branch: after the restart the agent sees the same catalog, Work opens in its profile, and an open with no profile uses the reported default.
This branch: a cookie the agent set in a Work tab is still there after another restart with no client.
Not checked:
macOS, Windows, a packaged installer, and a real provider.
On main, the cookie check after the restart can't start, because Work can't be opened.
Separate from this fix: a cookie set under about 30 seconds before the server stopped was lost. The run above waited for Chromium to write it to Work's Cookies file.
Prior PRs
None for this issue. @JustYannicc reported #19805 with the cause and a service test, and on 2026-10-18 posted a branch with the same design. This PR follows it with a smaller diff and adds the desktop run. #21745 (@Marve10s, open) changes the same reportProfiles hunk to merge reports across clients. The fixes complement each other, and whichever lands second needs a small rebase.

The server browser kept the profile catalog that web and desktop clients
report only in memory. After a restart, agents and scheduled tasks that ran
before a client reconnected saw only Default and Incognito, so a named
profile failed with an unknown-profile error and an omitted profile opened
throwaway storage.
Save the reported catalog and default to server-browser/reported-profiles.json
when it changes, and load it at startup. Unreadable or invalid state falls
back to the built-in profiles, as before.

Walkthrough
ServerBrowser now loads reported browser profiles from disk at startup and persists changed reports atomically. Tests cover profile availability after a server restart and startup handling of missing, empty, invalid, and unreadable saved catalogs.

Load, save, and verify reported profiles apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts, apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts
ServerBrowser loads and decodes saved profile reports at startup. It serializes updates, skips unchanged content, and atomically saves changed reports. Tests cover named-profile availability after restart and startup warnings for invalid or unreadable data.
Named profiles remain selectable after restart, but the test does not yet verify that opening one selects its existing storage. Add that assertion to protect the restart behavior.

Explanation
[#19805] requires named reported profiles to remain available after a server restart before a client reconnects. The supplied implementation evidence shows that ServerBrowser loads reported-profiles.json at startup and decodes it with PreviewReportProfilesInput. reportProfiles saves the current catalog and default profile ID with writeFileStringAtomically under a one-permit Semaphore, and it writes only when the catalog changes. Missing or invalid data falls back to built-in profiles, and write failures log warnings without losing the retry state. The supplied test summary covers restart restoration, named-profile selection, the default ID, and invalid or unreadable saved files. The reported Linux desktop run also confirms Work opens and retains its storage before client reconnect.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The supplied change summary lists only ServerBrowser.ts and ServerBrowser.test.ts. The source changes implement profile-catalog persistence, startup loading, atomic writes, ordering, and failure logging for [#19805]. The test changes cover restart behavior and persistence-file failure cases. No client, contract, settings, default-profile, or report-combination behavior changes are reported. These changes remain within the linked issue scope.

reportProfiles performs reusable profile-catalog persistence through writeFileStringAtomically. It is called as a service operation, not as an internal per-event helper. Add the named span. The existing ServerBrowser["Service"]["reportProfiles"] type remains compatible with the wrapped function.

fell back to the built-in profiles without a trace, and the next report
then replaced the saved catalog. Startup now logs those failures with

Assert the restarted Work open passes the saved profile's storage key to the context layer.
The restart test checks the tab's profileId, defaultProfileId, and the profiles list. It does not check which storage key the context layer receives. A regression that resolves profile-work but calls contextFor with another key, or with a new profile, would still pass these assertions.
Add a recording to the ServerBrowserContexts mock. Then assert that the restarted open for Work calls contextFor for profile-work. The tab's profileId alone does not show which storage the agent used.
A direct ServerBrowserContexts test would not cover this path. It would pass its own profile ID to contextFor, so it would never exercise the ID that ServerBrowser supplies after restart.

thanks @only21mil. the schema-validated startup load, serialized atomic saves, unchanged-report skip, and fallback warnings are preserved. i updated this branch directly, keeping all contributor commits and merging main at 3433ba15fdfe.
simplified the save operation into one named generator under the existing semaphore.
added the requested assertion that reopening Work after restart uses the existing profile-work context storage key.
fixed an interruption race found during review: a disconnect after rename could leave the saved-content cache stale and make a later report skip a necessary write. the write and cache update now finish together under the lock. a deterministic regression in the existing test file reproduces the failure before this fix.

the original bug on main and the fix after a full server-process restart before any client reconnects. profile creation is disabled in the web client and requires desktop. main desktop startup first failed because libsecret-1-dev was missing. after installing it, the retry stalled at the web build transforming... stage and expired without a usable desktop client. i failed to cap that attempt at the requested ten minutes; it consumed most of the budget. a later isolated desktop bundle step completed, but the end-to-end desktop scenario was not completed.

A missing or invalid file falls back to the built-in profiles, as before.writeFileStringAtomically, asserverSettings.tsdoes, and happen only when the catalog changes, so a client re-reporting on connect writes nothing.Semaphorekeeps memory and disk in report order. A failed write logs a warning. How reports combine is unchanged. The server saves whatever catalog it holds, so this works with either outcome of #19279.
Scope and approval
#19805 reports the bug. On 2026-10-22 @juliusmarminge added
needs more info, then removed it after @JustYannicc replied that the web-client steps were invalid and corrected the issue. The corrected issue asks for a desktop setup that reports a named profile, then rawpreview_statusandpreview_openbefore and after a restart, with the second calls made before any client reconnects.
