Scope stop contract and lifecycle packages/shared/src/AgentScope.ts, apps/server/src/process/agentScope.ts, apps/server/src/process/agentScope.test.ts |
The shared contract adds AgentScopeStopError. The server checks scope state, handles OOM-related or deactivating shutdown, and waits up to 15 seconds for cleanup. Tests cover pending cleanup, timeout, OOM diagnosis, and stop failures. |
ACP runtime integration and validation packages/provider-acp/src/server/AcpSessionRuntime.ts, apps/server/src/provider/acp/AcpJsonRpcConnection.test.ts |
Non-shell launches use an agent scope when available. Runtime exit and termination paths stop the scope, and containment reports cgroup-v2 for scoped launches. Linux tests cover descendant cleanup, teardown ordering, and stop errors. |
Provider shutdown handling packages/provider-muse/src/server/adapter.ts, packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.ts |
Muse and Pi shutdown effects log causes and ignore failures from agentScope.stop. |

Resource isolation improves, and explicit restarts wait for cleanup. However, an unavailable shutdown diagnostic can leave background work running, with subsequent cleanup attempts reusing the failure instead of retrying termination.
Retained concerns
- Medium · reliability · inferred: Missing OOM diagnostics can strand live scoped work without a fresh cleanup attempt. With OOMPolicy enabled, an undefined OOM counter is treated as shutdown already in progress, even when the scope is active and populated. No stop command is sent; polling times out instead. ACP caches that failure, while ordinary-exit and finalizer paths suppress it, so those paths cannot retry termination after diagnostics recover. This weakens descendant-lifecycle containment. Explicit restart does fail closed, and the triggering environment condition has not been demonstrated in production.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The demonstrated cleanup-failure scope is the affected native unit and its descendants, which can retain their existing execution and workspace authority. Commands use the existing systemd user manager. The inspected path does not establish new root authority, cross-user access, or a tenant boundary.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — The supported concern is a conditional lifecycle-containment failure, not a verified exploit. An unavailable memory.events counter can prevent a stop request while work remains live. No attacker-controlled source for that diagnostic failure was established, and explicit restart failure remains visible to its caller.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — In the inspected ACP path, the scope name uses the fixed acp label and a server-generated UUID fragment. Teardown passes the returned unit as a separate systemctl argument. The stop implementation rejects names outside the t3code- prefix and .scope suffix; this naming check is not a per-tenant authorization mechanism.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — Cleanup failures were already suppressed by the legacy force-cleanup finalizer. The introduced recovery difference is that native cleanup reuses the cached stop result for both explicit termination and finalizers; the base finalizer invoked a separate force-cleanup operation. Thus a transient native-stop failure cannot be retried by these later cleanup paths.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Do not treat an unreadable OOM counter as a pending OOM shutdown.
When scope.oomPolicy is true and state.oomKills === undefined, stopping becomes true. stop then skips systemctl --user stop. oomKills is undefined whenever readCgroupFile cannot read memory.events. For example, readCgroupFile cannot read it when the memory controller is not enabled for the scope cgroup. The set-property failure on the agents slice is only logged, and user-manager delegation varies by host. In that state:
- Nothing stops the scope.
awaitStoppedpolls for 15 seconds and fails with "Agent scope did not finish stopping". stopScopeis wrapped inEffect.cachedinAcpSessionRuntime.ts. The exit fork, the explicit teardown, and both runtime finalizers reuse the cached failure. No later attempt sends a stop request.- The ACP agent and its descendants keep running in the scope after teardown reports an error.
OOMPolicy=stop makes systemd deactivate the unit quickly after a kernel kill. In that case, activeState === "deactivating" and result === "oom-kill" already detect a pending OOM shutdown. A missing counter on an active scope is not evidence of an OOM kill. Skip the manual stop only when there is positive evidence. The fake filesystem in agentScope.test.ts always writes oom_kill N, so no test covers the missing-counter path. Add a test case where oomKills is undefined.

Note Written by thanks @marinushv. your scope-first placement and legacy fallback are preserved, along with your commit. i merged main and folded the overlapping scope API work into its existing implementation. the update reaps the launcher before accepting an absent scope, waits for descendant cleanup, and blocks both explicit and automatic replacement when cleanup fails. pi and muse finalizers log the now-fallible shared cleanup result. the earlier suggestion to treat an unreadable OOM counter as zero would regress main's diagnosis guard. this head retains that guard, bounds the wait, and fails replacement closed. hosts without readable OOM diagnostics can still report cleanup failure; that limitation is explicit rather than allowing replacement work to proceed. verification at
two independent review rounds found the launcher and automatic-restart edges above. the last restart finding is fixed and regression-tested; no third round was started under the requested cap. coderabbit reports success but hit its review limit, so it has not reviewed the final head. authenticated Grok inference and non-Linux clients remain unverified. this is server-only, with no UI change. |
On Linux, ACP agents using descendant ownership create a lifecycle cgroup beneath the T3 server and skip the shared agent scope. Grok takes this path, so its work is charged to the server's memory budget instead of the agent budget.
Select the shared scope first and let that unit own both resource placement and descendant cleanup. Keep the existing cgroup/process-ledger path when native scopes are unavailable. Explicit ACP teardown waits for the scope to finish stopping and propagates cleanup errors before the adapter can start replacement work. Pending OOM shutdown completes without a manual stop replacing its diagnosis.
This qualifies for the focused obvious-bug exception: it repairs a branch that bypasses the existing agent-resource contract while preserving the existing teardown barrier. The
unit/stopAPI overlaps #21299, which retains this Grok placement branch; this fix also requires completion-waiting cleanup for ACP restart callers.Validation:
