fix(server): a commit without a Git identity now says how to fix it - #21662
thecoooler wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
When user.name or user.email is missing or unusable, git commit fails and T3 Code reported only "Git command exited with a non-zero status.". The driver now classifies git's identity diagnostics as the fixed `identity_unknown` reason, and a failed commit with that reason tells the user which git config commands to run. git commit runs with LC_MESSAGES=C so the diagnostic stays classifiable in other UI languages (unless LC_ALL is set) without changing the character encoding commit hooks see. GitCommandError.reason now decodes unknown values as absent, so clients that include this change keep decoding errors from servers with newer reasons. When user.name or user.email is overridden by an invalid repository-local value, these instructions leave that value in place, so the commit still fails with the same identity error. Git gives repository configuration precedence over global configuration; include instructions to unset or correct the local override.

ApprovabilityVerdict: Would Approve Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, well-tested server bug fix that adds actionable Git identity diagnostics while preserving credential-redaction and backward-compatible contract decoding. An unresolved high-severity finding remains regarding invalid repository-local Git identity overrides, which is a concrete correctness risk. Needs human approval because:

…empty identity Repository-level user.name and user.email outrank --global ones, so the previous `git config --global` hint left a commit failing when the repository itself set an empty or invalid identity. The hint now tells the user to run `git config user.name`/`user.email` in the repository, which works whether the identity is missing everywhere or overridden locally. Preserve the original GitCommandError as cause.
The identity_unknown mapper drops the immediate error. This loses bounded diagnostic context and violates the error contract, but it does not create a major operational failure. Add cause: error; the fixed detail remains user-facing and the original error contains no raw stderr.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Account for identity values that override repository-local configuration.
If an inherited GIT_AUTHOR_NAME or GIT_COMMITTER_NAME is empty, Git uses that value before user.name. The suggested git config user.name command then leaves the commit failure unchanged. A worktree-specific user.name can also override the repository-local value. Tell users to check inherited identity variables and worktree configuration if the local commands do not resolve the error. Problem
When
user.nameoruser.emailis not configured on the server, clicking Commit fails with only:Git already said why (
fatal: empty ident name (for <…>) not allowed), but stderr is deliberately kept offGitCommandError, and none of the existingGitCommandFailureReasonpatterns match identity errors, so neither the UI norserver.trace.ndjsonshows the cause. I hit this on a fresh headless server and only found the cause by re-runninggit var GIT_AUTHOR_IDENTby hand in the worktree.Change
GitVcsDriverCore: git's six identity diagnostics (empty ident name, unable to auto-detect name|email address,no name|email was given and auto-detection is disabled, name consists only of disallowed characters) are classified as a new fixed reason,identity_unknown. Onlyfatal:diagnostic lines are considered, as with the other reasons, and no stderr text reaches the error.commitmaps that reason to fixed, actionable text, which reaches web and mobile through the existingaction_failedmessage:Git needs a name and email to commit. In this repository on the server, run git config user.name "Your Name" and git config user.email "you@example.com", then commit again. (identity_unknown)The hint is repository-level, not
--global, because repository settings outrank global ones: a repository that sets an empty or invalid identity itself would keep failing after a--globalfix.git commitruns withLC_MESSAGES=Cso the diagnostic stays classifiable when the server runs in another UI language. I usedLC_MESSAGESrather thanLC_ALL=C(executeGitWithStableDiagnostics) because commit hooks inherit the environment andLC_ALL=Cwould also change theirLC_CTYPE/encoding. Hooks may now print untranslated messages in hook output. A user-setLC_ALLstill wins, in which case the failure stays unclassified as today.identity_unknownjoinsGitCommandFailureReason, andGitCommandError.reasonusesForwardCompatibleOptionalso clients that include this change decode reasons from newer servers as absent. This is the same change as in fix(server): a git failure caused by a missing ref now says so #17794 (ref_not_found), so the two will conflict trivially ingit.ts, the end ofGIT_FAILURE_REASON_PATTERNS, and theGitCommandErrordescribe block ingit.test.ts.Scope and approval
This is the small follow-up @juliusmarminge invited in #11729 (comment) (closing note: "If one of your cases … isn't covered there, a small follow-up that adds it to the
GitCommandFailureReasonunion would be very welcome."). It adds one reason to the existing classification from #8645 and keeps its redaction guarantees (no raw stderr, unlike the closed #4467/#5620). One problem: an opaque commit failure when Git has no identity. The forward-compatible decode is needed to add any reason safely and copies #17794.Verification
