ACP agents that advertise models through session model state appeared with only Default in T3 Code, and model picks never reached session/set_model.

Use that advertised catalog when no model select config option exists, and apply picks through the corresponding ACP operation. Enable in-session switching, honor advertised literal auto and default IDs, use live config-option IDs when they take precedence, and retain the current model within the bounded catalog. Skip ordinary stored IDs removed from the active catalog, while preserving explicitly configured custom IDs and surfacing peer rejections normally.

Fixes #17260. Maintainer takeover of #19519, building on @StiensWout’s ACP investigation and implementation. Contributor commits are preserved; current main is merged into the branch.

Verification:

  • PR-added cases reduced from 16 to three net additions across existing files. Public adapter protocol coverage checks discovery, initial picks, switching away and back, advertised and unadvertised placeholders, live config-option replacement/removal and precedence, stale ordinary ID no-ops, and explicitly configured custom writes through legacy, flat and grouped sources. Existing catalog-bound coverage retains the current model for both catalog sources.
  • All 142 focused tests pass. Reverting each of the three production files independently makes the retained regression coverage fail. Scoped server, provider-acp and provider-acp-registry typechecks, targeted lint/formatting and diff checks pass.
  • Headless Linux web proof used the same local ACP v1 peer against main and the rebuilt adapter. Main shows only Default; the rebuilt picker shows all four advertised choices. The original seven-turn proof was refreshed on the published candidate: five turns completed in one provider session, including return switches and literal auto/default; wire requests and persisted run selections agree. Two additional turns completed after the peer removed the selected model between catalog discovery and session creation, covering both session-state and config-option catalogs. Neither sent the stale ID. Their persisted run selections still record the requested ID; the peer reply and refreshed picker show its actual current model.
  • Two full independent review rounds used Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol. The first was clean; subsequent bot feedback exposed stale selection failures. The first repair also needed the existing explicit-custom-model exemption restored. Both reviewers found no confirmed blockers in the full updated diff. Each independently passed the 24 registry/probe cases in round two; earlier reviews also passed the 118 shared-adapter tests and 52 registry/probe/Grok/Antigravity tests. Direct negative replay proofs failed before each repair, with all 142 cases passing after. All 30 checks on the updated head completed without failures; build/typecheck, lint, focused CI test jobs and all eight server shards passed. One pre-existing replay-peer teardown race appeared once during test reduction; subsequent focused runs passed without adding waits or changing the harness.
  • Authenticated Hermes inference, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and Electron desktop were not verified. Native clients consume the shared provider catalog; no client or contract changes are included. No credentials or live user database were used.

Before — main, same ACP peer:

Before: ACP session models hidden behind Default

After — rebuilt adapter, same peer and viewport:

After: all four advertised ACP session models in the web picker

Recorded web selections and replies in the same ACP session:

https://gh-file-drop-api-prod-mi5fy3sowv63ufte.pinglabs.workers.dev/f/631b078e62071f8f/19519-r2-switching.mp4

After — a previously selected model is removed before session creation; the turn completes using the current model:

After: stale session-state selection completes with the peer current model

After: stale config-option selection also completes

Implemented with Codex GPT-6.1-Sol in T3 Code; test reduction by Codex GPT-6-Astra. Independent adversarial reviews by Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol.

…on model state

ACP v1 agents such as Hermes advertise their models as session model state
(`models.availableModels` / `currentModelId`) instead of a model-category config
option. The ACP Registry probe and live configuration only read config options,
so the composer showed only Default, and the generic ACP adapter never applied
a picked model.

Discovery now falls back to session model state when there is no model config
option, and the adapter switches those agents with `session/set_model`. The
config-option path still wins when an agent advertises both.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes shared ACP session behavior and exposes newly discovered models in the production picker, including new model-switching RPC paths and altered handling of stored selections. Its cross-provider runtime impact is broader than a self-contained bug fix, so it warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The ACP adapter now discovers and selects models from session model state when no selectable model config option exists. The registry uses session model state as a fallback catalog and preserves the current model within the bounded catalog.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 43474

ACP agents that advertise models only through session model state now expose those models in the picker. Users can switch among them within a session, including advertised default and auto entries. Agents that provide a model config option keep that config-option path and its precedence. No outstanding issues block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 43474

The change adds another way to discover choices and switch an existing session. Validation and session identity checks limit its reach. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but end-to-end coverage remains incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new reach is peer-advertised metadata flowing into an instance's catalog and caller-selected model IDs reaching an existing session operation. Publication uses the configured instance ID, and mutation uses the runtime's active session ID. The inspected paths do not demonstrate new cross-instance or credential authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Peer catalogs and requested selections are separate inputs: advertising a catalog does not make every requested string eligible for a write. Ordinary IDs require membership in the selected catalog source; custom-ID eligibility comes from configured settings. Both mutation paths send structured RPC payloads with the active runtime session identity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected lifecycle paths retain transition serialization, reject starting over an active turn, and clear session setup during runtime restart. These provide containment for the new selection path, but do not establish whether an external peer applied a request whose response was lost.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #17260 requires ACP model discovery from session model state when no model select config option exists, session selection through session/set_model, and preservation of the config-option flow. probe.ts uses session model state as the fallback, preserves the current model within the bounded catalog, and gives config options precedence. adapter.ts advertises in-session switching, validates active catalog IDs, applies session-state selections through setSessionModel, and retains explicit custom model IDs. The reported focused tests cover discovery, switching, literal IDs, stale entries, live option changes, precedence, and catalog bounds.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes remain within Issue #17260. They update ACP model discovery, selection routing, live configuration publication, and custom-model handling. The test-kit and test changes directly support these behaviors and existing adapter coverage. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

Advertise switching for session-model-only agents.

selectionTransition.ts rejects a model change when supportsModelSwitchInSession is false. When an ACP session exposes usable session model state without a model config option, adapter.ts can apply the change through setSessionModel, but it currently advertises this capability as false. Include usable session model state in the capability check while preserving config-option precedence.

Allow advertised models named default or auto.

When session model state advertises either ID and the current model differs, the guard prevents runtime.setSessionModel(requestedModel) from running. Allow these IDs when they appear in availableModels, while preserving placeholder handling when they are not advertised.

Follow-up for agents that advertise models only as ACP v1 session model state
(Hermes):

- Negotiated capabilities now report in-session model switching when session
model state is advertised, matching how configureSession applies the pick.
Previously the selection planner rejected every live model change.
- Advertised models whose ids are literally `default` or `auto` are selected
with session/set_model. Unadvertised placeholders still leave the agent's
model alone, and the config-option path is unchanged.
- A valid current model listed past the 256-model catalog cap takes the last
slot instead of being dropped with a null current model.

The two outside-diff findings are fixed in 76c4589:

  • Session-model-state agents now negotiate in-session model switching. A scripted peer checks the public transition planner and the actual A to B to A session/set_model requests.
  • Literal default and auto IDs are sent when the agent advertises those exact models. Unadvertised placeholders remain no-ops, and config-option precedence is preserved.

The inline current-model catalog finding is fixed in the same commit. Primary and fresh independent review reran the corrective public cases; scoped typechecks and lint pass.

configureSession chose between session/set_config_option and
session/set_model from the setup-time config options, while the picker
lists the live ones. An agent that added a model config option after
setup got session/set_model for a catalog from the option, and one that
dropped it got session/set_config_option for an option that no longer
exists.

Route by the live model select option and write it under its live id.
Picks applied through it also update the session model state, so a later
fallback to session/set_model compares against what the session runs on.

The live-configuration mismatch noted in the architecture review is fixed in 49fb697. Selection now reads the live model select option and writes its current configuration ID. If that option disappears, it falls back to session model state. Successful configuration writes also refresh the stored legacy current model so switching back after removal is applied.

Two scripted public registry tests reproduce both transitions before the fix, then verify the planner, actual wire request and published catalog after it. Primary reran 16 focused cases; fresh independent review reran 14 and reviewed the full diff.

configureSession skipped every "auto" or "default" pick on the model
config option path, even when the agent's live model option offered that
exact value. The session stayed on its previous model while T3 recorded
the placeholder as applied. The session model state path already
switched to advertised placeholder IDs.

Apply a placeholder pick through the model config option when the option
advertises that value, flat or inside a group. Unadvertised placeholders
stay a no-op.

Taking over this one for the other-providers-21 maintainer batch. I’ll preserve the session-model discovery and switching behavior, reduce the coverage to the essential regressions, and rebuild against current main with independent review and headless verification. aorwall added a commit to aorwall/t3code that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
Merges upstream `pingdotgg/t3code` at `143ab1606d` (base `ab6be13d43`,
376 commits) into the fork. No merge PR was open, so this branches from
`main`.

## Merge

- **Landed:** 1177 files out of 1177 in the upstream range. The only
missing files are `apps/server/src/cli/pair.ts` and its test, which the
fork deliberately keeps deleted. The fork delta is now 817 files.
- **Conflicts:** 14, each resolved by its `preflight.mjs` verdict. The
tracker entry in `docs/fork/upstream-merge-log.md` covers each one. The
ones a reviewer should read:
- **`ProjectDefaultsSettings.tsx`:** upstream moved the
agent-browser-access row to `IntegrationsSettings.tsx`
(`AgentBrowserAccessSetting`). The fork's `workspaceOwnsProjectDefaults`
gate moved with it and returns null at a Workspace project scope.
- **`terminal.ts`:** keeps the fork's `TerminalMetadataState` seed and
takes upstream's `Stream.drop(1)`. Upstream's new `runtime.test.ts`
metadata test now reads `.terminals`.
- **`Sidebar.tsx` / `Sidebar.logic.ts`:** upstream's new
`resolveSidebarRowThreadId` resolves against the unfiltered shells. It
now takes `source`, because the fork's `isSidebarSubagentThread` hides
only provider-native subagents.
- **`ChatView.tsx` (auto-merged):** the fork's hosted script path calls
`storeSetActiveTerminal` again. The local path drops its early
`setTerminalOpen(true)`, following upstream pingdotgg#18340, so the drawer no
longer claims the default terminal id.
- **`AGENTS.md`:** keeps the fork's prose and adds upstream's new
`Effect.fn` rule.
- **`apps/mobile/package.json`:** takes upstream's test script and keeps
`tsc` rather than `tsc-rs`.
- **`pnpm-lock.yaml`:** `tsc-rs` entries stripped, then re-derived with
`install.mjs`.
- **Other fixes:**
- `fork/goToDefinition.test.ts` moved to browser mode for upstream's new
`no-dom-test-environment` lint rule.
- `ThreadDetailsPrRows.browser.test.tsx` now passes
`activeProjectScriptsEditable`.
- One new `duplicateAddExceptions` entry was added and one stale one
retired.
- **Unsupported methods:** ADD 0, DROP 0, KEEP 2.
`packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts` is unchanged.

## Verification

`verify.mjs --sequential`:
- duplicate-adds, tripwires, resolution-check, unsupported-methods,
lockfile, fmt, lint, typecheck and build all pass.
- `test` fails. The files that fail when run alone are the same five as
on 2026-10-19 (`AgentScope`, `OpenCodeServerLedger`, ssh `tunnel`,
`AcpAdapterV2`, `OrchestratorReplayFixtures`), all sandbox
process-reaping or auth issues.
- Two new failures are also environmental: the partial-clone tests in
`GitVcsDriver.test.ts` and `RepositoryIdentityResolver.test.ts`. The
sandbox's `~/.gitconfig` rewrites `git@github.com:` to https with
`insteadOf`.
- `@t3tools/web` had one real failure, upstream's new Sidebar subagent
test. It is fixed and passes on its own.

**Caveat:** the last amend changed only that test fixture and the docs.
The sandbox restarted three times during this run, and the typecheck and
fmt re-run after that amend did not finish. A follow-up comment will
report it.

## Usable as-is
- LaTeX/KaTeX math in chat markdown, behind the client setting
`mathRenderingEnabled` in Appearance, off by default (pingdotgg#18735).
- Mermaid renders while a message streams (pingdotgg#18308). Large changed-file
trees are virtualized (pingdotgg#21482, pingdotgg#21831). HTML previews skip the loading
skeleton (pingdotgg#21480).
- Pasted folders become workspace references (pingdotgg#22072). PR check rows
aligned, and skipped checks get a slash icon (pingdotgg#22090, pingdotgg#21498). A
confirmation before "Close with comment" (pingdotgg#18175).
- Subagent overflow badge (pingdotgg#19860). Context usage survives a fork
(pingdotgg#22075). Copy paths relative to the thread workspace (pingdotgg#21497). PDF
preview (pingdotgg#21095).
- Contract decoding tolerates newer PR shapes (`ForwardCompatibleArray`
/ `ForwardCompatibleOptional`; pingdotgg#19899, pingdotgg#21575, pingdotgg#21665).
- In-app browser search engine settings (pingdotgg#17688). These are client-only,
but they only matter where the browser panel is exposed.

## Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- **`thread.stop` and `capabilities.threadStop` (pingdotgg#22052):** stops a
thread without resolving its run. The client falls back to the existing
stop path until the backend advertises `threadStop`. Added to the
capabilities gap.
- **`blocking: false` on async questions (pingdotgg#15430):** keeps a thread
Working while a question is open. The backend has to emit the field.
- **Provider `optionDescriptors` / `installedVersion` (pingdotgg#19519,
pingdotgg#19567):** drive dynamic model options and update checks. Both are
optional, so the client degrades.
- **Terminal `resume: true` on resubscribe (pingdotgg#18444):** the backend
should not reopen a closed shell.
- **`rootPath` on git diff/status results:** used for workspace-relative
paths.
- **`repositoryWebUrl` on PR links (pingdotgg#21575).**
- **Relay, T3 Connect, hosted sign-in and `t3 update` work:** not
applicable to the single-origin Moatless deployment.

## Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
- **Settlement:** an empty inactive thread auto-settles (pingdotgg#15783).
Settling clears snooze (pingdotgg#17547). An interrupted run does not start the
settle timer on a snoozed thread (pingdotgg#17789).
- **Runs:** auto-delivered messages queue between provider turns
(pingdotgg#15691). A message promoted into a stopping run stays queued (pingdotgg#16926).
Compaction cadence survives restarts (pingdotgg#21880).
- **ACP:** native foreground work settles independently, and child
routing moves between runs (pingdotgg#21614–pingdotgg#21616). Delegated children stop once
(pingdotgg#18826).
- **Terminals:** slow clients no longer queue unbounded output (pingdotgg#18429).
Shells do not inherit tmux (pingdotgg#13359). Script commands stay out of shell
history (pingdotgg#13903).
- **Files:** saves no longer follow a symlink out of the workspace
(pingdotgg#18819). This one is security-relevant.
- **Git:** new worktrees fetch the base branch's own tracked remote
(pingdotgg#21032). Rename and non-ASCII paths are kept in changed-file lists
(pingdotgg#20175). Rollback blocked by an index lock now says so (pingdotgg#11340).

The `docs/fork/gaps.md` entries "Capabilities are reported…" and
"Runtime fixes upstream made to its own server" are extended with these.
