fix(server): Claude /goal shows complete only when Claude judges it met - #19494

…round subagent runs Claude Code skips a goal's Stop hook check while background work runs and checks again on a later turn. The adapter inferred completion from a normal turn end plus an empty roster, but the roster leaves subagents out, so a turn that ended while a background Agent ran marked the goal complete. The completion check now also requires that the live process runs no background work of the types Claude Code 2.1.292 waits on: local_agent, remote_agent, in_process_teammate and local_workflow on the subagent path (local_bash is already on the roster). Tasks of other types, such as mcp_task and monitor_ws, are exempt, as they are in Claude. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The adapter now needs McpProviderSessions, so the two goal-deferral tests from the cherry-picked fix use the same test layer as the rest of the file. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…t is met T3 marked a Claude goal complete whenever a turn ended normally with no background work left, because in SDK mode Claude reports a goal's verdict only in its session transcript. A check that Claude skipped, one whose evaluator failed or timed out, or a goal Claude judged impossible all read as complete, and stayed that way. The query runner now gives the SDK a session store, so the CLI mirrors its transcript on stdout (--session-mirror), and keeps only the root session's goal_status records. They are applied when they arrive, including after the turn ended: a met record completes the goal, an unmet one counts a check and reopens a complete goal, a set or cleared record starts or drops it, and an impossible verdict drops it (Claude ends the goal, and Resume would send `/goal resume`, which Claude reads as a new goal). While a process delivers these records, a turn end no longer implies a met goal and Stop hook feedback no longer counts checks. A CLI whose mirror delivers nothing keeps the inferred completion. The store loads nothing, so a resumed CLI still reads its own transcript and config directory. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR substantially changes the default Claude server path by enabling transcript mirroring and eager flushing, then uses a new asynchronous integration to drive goal state and background-work behavior. The scope and SDK dependency are broader than a routine bug fix, so the runtime and default changes merit human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

…d goal Claude Code accepts a goal evaluator answer without a reason, and then writes an unmet goal_status record with no reason. The adapter ignored such a record, so a stale goal for another objective stayed on screen, and a goal shown as complete was not reopened by the check that found it unmet. It now counts the record as an unmet check for its own objective, without a new last-check reason. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

When the CLI has no later SDK message or goal record,next()remains blocked and the queuedgoal_statusrecord never reachesnextClaudeGoalFromRecord. The provider goal therefore remains stale, such as active instead of complete.Register the waiter before checking the queue, or make waiter registration and queue inspection atomic. Apply the same synchronization correction to all paths that consume mirror messages. Add a test that appends a root-session record in this gap and asserts that the goal state changes without another SDK message.

/goalshows Goal complete only after Claude Code has judged it met. While Claude waits on background work, or its goal check fails, the row keeps showing the goal as pursued.sessionStore, marked@alphain SDK 0.3.276), and goal state follows Claude's owngoal_statusrecords. Codex goals, contracts and clients are untouched. If a CLI delivers no records, the adapter falls back to the current check, now including fix(server): a Claude /goal no longer reads as complete while a background subagent runs #16598's background-subagent fix.@alphasessionStore. Every acceptance item passed independent review on this head; the gaps above are cases that write no record, so they take the tested no-verdict path. IfsessionStoreis not acceptable yet, fix(server): a Claude /goal no longer reads as complete while a background subagent runs #16598 alone fixes the background-subagent case.Problem
On a Claude thread, the goal row reads Goal complete while Claude is still working toward the goal. The goal is still set in Claude, only T3's status is wrong. That invites users to clear a goal that is still running. Reported in #16611; we hit it repeatedly on long orchestrator runs where Claude waits on background agents.
Cause
Claude Code does not send goal state on the SDK's default stdout (
active_goalis emitted only underCLAUDE_CODE_REMOTE). SofinalizeActiveTurninfers completion: the goal was active, the model replied, the turn ended normally, and the background roster is empty. Any turn that ends without Stop-hook feedback reads as "passed". Claude ends such turns in three cases where the goal is not met:completed, with no feedback (reproduced with an invalid evaluator model).Once marked complete, the status also stays complete through later turns that have no explicit goal text.
Claude Code does record its real verdict. Every check writes a
goal_statusattachment to the session transcript:met:truewhen achieved, met:falsewith a reason, failed:truewhen impossible, andsentinelentries for set and clear. A skipped or errored check writes nothing. With--session-mirror, which the SDK enables when asessionStoreis passed, these entries reach the SDK over stdout before theresultthey precede.Change
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts:main: the new tests needMcpProviderSessions.layer. It stays as the fallback when no records arrive.sessionStorewithsessionStoreFlush: "eager"and aload()that returnsnull, so resume still uses the CLI's own transcript and config dir.appendkeeps only root-transcriptgoal_statusattachments, so subagent, sidechain and other entries are ignored. The store is skipped whenpersistSession: falseor file checkpointing is set, because the SDK rejects a store in both cases.resultit preceded, and closing the stream mid-read still closes the query. A single waiter slot keeps memory flat; there is a regression test for this.active(a new goal resets the count).active, withchecks + 1and the last reason. This also turns acompletegoal back toactive.complete.failed:true) → no goal, because Claude ends the goal. Ablockedstatus would offer Resume, which sends/goal resume, and Claude would set that as a new goal. A distinct failed status would need a contract change; happy to follow up if you want one.finalizeActiveTurnno longer infers completion and Stop-hook feedback is not counted twice. Processes whose mirror delivers nothing keep the previous behavior. Example: a launcher that sets its ownCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, unless the instancehomePathmatches it.docs/internals/providers.mddescribes the mirror and the fallback.docs/user/composer.mdgains one line saying Claude ends a goal it judges impossible.--session-mirrorexists in CLI 2.1.111, the oldest version T3 supports (checked in the npmcli.jsof 2.1.111 and 2.1.112). Resuming a session does not re-mirror its existing transcript, only new entries. Provider logs contain only the goal records, never the mirrored batches.Scope and approval
Bug #16611 is triaged and its cause was confirmed by a maintainer comment. This PR fixes that one problem, a Claude goal shown complete when Claude has not judged it met, for every case where Claude ends a turn without a verdict, not only background work. It builds on and includes #16598, which a maintainer named as the fix in flight. If you prefer, #16598 can land first and this rebases to the B commit only.
