fix(server): compact superseded history and reclaim database space - #19249

ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This XL PR adds default background database compaction/reclamation, an offline repair CLI, cross-client replay changes, and service lifecycle handling rather than making a small isolated fix. It also touches an auth package, suppresses a static-analysis diagnostic, and has an unresolved high-severity concern about services remaining stopped after restart failure. Not approved because:

withStopped leaves the previously running service stopped when manager.activate fails during cleanup, because runSteps aborts before starting it and Effect.orDie propagates the failure without recovery. Retry with manager.restart on activation errors before propagating the failure, as restart and install do.

Effect acquireUseRelease release behavior when acquisition fails or is interrupted official documentation
💡 Result:
**Short answer:** `release` runs only if `acquire` successfully produces a resource.
- **Acquisition fails:** There is no acquired resource to pass to `release`, so it is not run. The acquisition failure propagates.
- **Interrupted during acquisition:** Effect’s resource-management docs say acquisition is **uninterruptible**. So interruption is deferred until acquisition completes; if it succeeds, the resource is released as the interrupted operation exits. This follows from the documented acquisition guarantee, rather than an explicit `acquireUseRelease` interruption example. ([effect.website](https://effect.website/docs/v4/resource-management/scope))
- **Use fails or is interrupted:** Once acquisition succeeds, `acquireUseRelease` releases the resource even if using it errors; Effect’s finalization documentation also says cleanup runs on interruption. ([effect.website](https://effect.website/docs/v4/resource-management/introduction))
The official `acquireUseRelease` page states the success/use/release pattern, but doesn’t spell out acquisition-failure behavior separately. ([effect.website](https://effect.website/docs/v4/resource-management/introduction))

systemctl stop timeout service already stopped systemd official documentation launchctl bootout --wait timeout official documentation
💡 Result:
If you’re comparing “stop this service and wait until it’s stopped” across systemd and macOS:
- **systemd:** `systemctl stop name.service` waits for the stop job by default; `--no-block` enqueues it and returns without waiting. The service’s `TimeoutStopSec=` controls how long systemd waits during shutdown before taking the configured timeout action. If the unit is already inactive, systemd defines that state as stopped; the docs don’t promise a special message or exit status specifically for stopping an already-stopped unit. ([man7.org](https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/systemctl.1.html?utm_source=openai))
- **macOS `launchctl`:** `bootout` removes a service or domain from launchd. The cited `launchctl` manual describes its target forms, but does **not** document a `--wait` option or a timeout for `bootout`. So `launchctl bootout --wait ...` isn’t established by this source as supported syntax. ([keith.github.io](https://keith.github.io/xcode-man-pages/launchctl.1.html?utm_source=openai))
The `launchctl` source is an Xcode man-page mirror, not Apple’s official documentation; its page identifies an Xcode 27.2 beta 2 manual set. I couldn’t verify the behavior against an Apple-hosted manual. ([keith.github.io](https://keith.github.io/xcode-man-pages/?utm_source=openai))

Restore the service when stopping fails.
withStopped uses the stop steps as the acquisition of Effect.acquireUseRelease. A stop command timeout or non-zero exit fails acquisition, so activate does not run. A stop command can fail after it has started changing the service state, which can leave the service down or partially transitioned.
The interruption claim is not applicable here because Effect acquisition is uninterruptible. The fix should still cover stop failures:

Make the copied command usable in Windows Command Prompt. On win32, Line 26 still surrounds baseDir with single quotes. If the path contains spaces, cmd.exe splits the argument, so the copied t3 doctor command cannot select that database. Generate a Command Prompt-safe command or label the command as PowerShell-only. Enable incremental vacuum for migrated V2 databases.
layerConfig calls initializeV2Database(dbPath) before layerFromPath(dbPath). When a legacy state.sqlite exists, the initializer copies its tables into the V2 destination. The later empty-schema check then skips PRAGMA auto_vacuum = INCREMENTAL, so the migrated database does not receive scheduled page reclamation. Handle the auto-vacuum mode before copying the schema, or explicitly convert the copied database with VACUUM.

Rebuilt as a stack. This PR found the real problem and the shape of the fix: superseded whole-payload events dominate the database, and existing databases need an offline It mixed three separable concerns, so it is replaced by:
I compared the original diff against the stack. Changes from the original:
Nothing from the original was dropped without a replacement, apart from the stage progress bar. |
Remove superseded events automatically. New databases shrink in background batches; existing databases can enable this with
t3 doctor --fix. Reconnects fall back to snapshots after history cleanup.t3 doctort3 doctor --dry-run--fixt3 doctor --fixWeb/desktop Storage settings and mobile Maintenance show a dismissible notice when an older database has at least 1 GiB to reclaim. The copied command includes that environment's data directory. The CLI shows a stage bar and elapsed time during repairs. Doctor restores a service it paused even after repair failure/cancellation, leaves already-stopped and other environments' services alone, and documents the workflow in a dedicated user guide. Desktop/manual servers must be closed first.
Measured on a copy of the maintainer's database
Deletion alone reduced the full-history scan to 2.08 s; VACUUM reduced it further to 1.01 s. Automatic deletion starts after one minute and repeats every six hours, in 50-row batches. Full VACUUM is explicit and offline. Converted/new databases reclaim up to 1,024 pages per minute while running.
Method: Node 24.21.0 / SQLite 3.53.4, Apple M4 Max, 64 GB RAM. Medians of 3 scan/ANALYZE runs, 5 count runs, and 11 recent-range runs. Cache state was not controlled. Full-history scanning is a diagnostic upper bound; normal reconnects are capped. The same recent range returned 1,000 rows before and 331 after deletion. Startup optimize took 7.4 ms before and 1.2 ms after; the original 30-second delay was not reproduced.
Limitation: The guarded CLI refused one pre-existing unreadable thread projection. Benchmarks therefore invoked the underlying compactor and VACUUM directly on the disposable copy. The live database was untouched.
Validation: original 146 focused tests; 45 focused tests for doctor, database maintenance, storage status, scheduling, authorization and instrumentation. Server/web/mobile typechecks and targeted lint pass. 77 focused CLI/service/database tests cover selection, automatic service handling, dry-run isolation and progress. Isolated CLI dry run confirmed while the server was running.
UI verification is pending: the built-in browser timed out twice on snapshots. No screenshots are claimed.
Implemented with GPT-6.1 Sol via Codex.
