Embedded images in web markdown file previews can keep a cached failure after the image is created. Reopening the rendered preview and workspace edits now refresh the signed asset URL, with later edits held until an in-flight URL request settles. Ordinary chat keeps its existing cache behavior.

Rebuilt from Saikrishna1876’s #18647. The takeover retains the file-preview wiring and replaces the previous test matrix with focused tests using the real query runner and atom registry.

Verification: 89 focused tests passed, including 6 asset browser tests; the final asset and React Compiler checks passed (8 tests). Web typecheck, scoped lint, and git diff --check passed. In the isolated headless Linux app, creating the missing SVG then reopening rendered markdown recovered the image; atomic replacement then reopening loaded the new 500px image instead of the previous 420px image. Tests cover cached success/failure reopening without a mutation ID, edits during initial and refresh requests, ordinary chat, and opening host-media links. Four regression cases failed against the previous takeover head.

Before (main): SVG exists, but reopening still shows a cached failure.

Before: embedded SVG remains unavailable

After: the same preview renders the SVG.

After: embedded SVG renders after reopening

Not verified: macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Electron desktop, or relay/tunnel connections.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 435b226

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused web bug fix that refreshes cached signed URLs only for embedded workspace/media images in markdown file previews while preserving ordinary chat behavior. The production changes are small and isolated, with targeted browser coverage and no schema, default, infrastructure, or static-analysis configuration changes.

📝 Walkthrough

Markdown previews now pass workspace mutation IDs to embedded assets. Eligible asset URLs refresh when a mutation occurs and the connection is ready. Pending asset requests expose their waiting state so later mutations can refresh after the request settles.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b6462

Markdown preview assets refresh after mutations made during loading. No merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b6462

Previews refresh existing image links after edits without changing file-access permissions. The reviewed paths preserve resource identity and authorization; remaining uncertainty concerns end-to-end failure recovery rather than a demonstrated new access path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The relevant exposure is host-file asset URL issuance under existing filesystem-read authority, not merely files inside a workspace. The unchanged runtime also permits a local-environment fallback for absolute media paths after specific remote asset lookup failures. The new refresh trigger reuses that existing resolution behavior rather than adding fallback authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An authored filesystem image reference can cause another asset URL request after a workspace mutation, but the reviewed flow preserves its resource input and authoritative permission requirement. No introduced or materially expanded privilege, cross-environment selection, or permission-bypass path was established within this inspected flow.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Connection readiness coordinates requests but is not authorization. Client asset state still masks host assets when filesystem access is unavailable, and server assets.createUrl policy requires filesystem-read scope for media-file and workspace-file resources. An automatic request attempted while locally blocked does not itself grant host-file authority.

The failed Test job on 6285f1e came from apps/desktop/src/app/CodexAuthCallback.test.ts, in "allows two accounts to complete independently". The native listener reported that its callback port was already in use. This test allocates two ports by binding and closing temporary listeners before starting the real callbacks, so a recycled port or another listener can cause this collision.

The callback code and tests are unchanged by this PR. All four tests in that file passed when run separately. Push 35c2674 includes the asset-refresh review fix and reruns CI.

Merged current main in aacc8bc and resolved the asset-hook conflict by retaining upstream's file-access failure reasons alongside the preview's pending-refresh flag.

106 focused web tests passed after refreshing dependencies, along with web typecheck and scoped lint. The PR diff remains the same six files.

Local CodeRabbit review raised one minor concern about a mutation ID changing from undefined to a defined value during loading. That transition is not reachable in the file-preview path: FileMarkdownPreview always passes workspaceMutationId={props.workspaceMutationId ?? null}, and FilePreviewPanel supplies string | null. Other production callers omit the prop throughout their lifetime. No extra code change was made for that finding.

Greptile was attempted using the personal profile and remains unavailable because the repository is not connected to that account.

Fixed the Test Web failure in c65b7ba33: React Compiler does not support the nullish assignment operator in the refresh effect. The explicit null check preserves the same pending-token behavior. The aggregate Check failed only because Test Web failed.

All 106 focused web tests pass with the app's compiled test configuration, alongside the ChatMarkdown compiler coverage test, web typecheck, and scoped lint. Local CodeRabbit review found no issues; Greptile remains unavailable because this repository is not connected to the personal account.

Taking over this one. I'll trim the tests, rebuild the refresh on the existing workspace-mutation refresh hook, and push to this branch.

A markdown file preview that embeds a host image kept showing a cached
"Image unavailable" result or a stale signed URL after the agent created
or replaced the file. The preview now threads the workspace mutation id
down to ChatMarkdownAssetImage, which refreshes the asset URL through the
existing useWorkspaceMutationRefresh hook, the same way the video and
audio previews already do. Chat markdown passes no mutation id and never
refreshes.

Obsolete review of d4cab77. The current head preserves later mutation tokens while assetUrl is Loading or waiting, consumes them only after the refresh can run, and resets the handled token while disconnected. The six focused browser cases use the real query runner/registry and cover pending initial and refresh requests; 89 focused tests plus final asset/compiler checks and two independent review rounds passed. All three historical threads are resolved, including CodeRabbit’s own acknowledgment of this finding. Dismissing the stale bot change request; no human review is dismissed.
